The Official Onkyo TX-NR1009 Thread - Page 7

I may be getting this receiver but I need to make a decision by tomorrow. I have 10 speakers around to use and am debating between 7.2 and 9.2, and I still have decide on which combination of wides, heights, or rear surrounds I want to use. I plan on getting a 2nd sub so x.2 is required.

-L,C, and R are all Triad Bronze. (4 ohm 200w max)
-2 Triad Bronze Satellites (These will be front wides or heights if I go that route - 8 ohm 125w max)
-Rest are Bowers & Wilkins M1 (8 ohm 100w max)
-1 Emotiva Ultra 12

I believe this receiver would run a 9.2 setup with these just fine, with room for upgrades.

I have a chance to get the 1009 for about $800. Are there any other better deals out there?

Great enough to jump on ASAP? It's new in box BTW.

I would say yes, only other thing is make sure it's an authorized dealer.

It's from Best Buy so I'm pretty sure it is. This is the employee price BTW if anyone has friends there.

No, there are not any better deals out there. Even as a refurb, the 1009 is normally around $949.

I keep reading mixed opinions about this receiver doing 11.x surround processing. It boasts 11 speaker terminals, DTS Neo: X, and DSX 11.2 calibration, so with a separate power amp why could it not do it?

You can only pick 2 of 3 from: (front high, front wide, rear surround) and thus there is no way to run 11 discrete channels on the 1009, no matter how the amplification is arranged. It simply does not do the signal processing for all 11 channels at the same time. Note that I am not including the sub(s) when I am talking about 11 discrete channels.

It does allow you to plug in 11 speakers and then you can toggle between the speaker configuration options FH+FW or FH+RS or FW+RS, but there is no FH+FW+RS option, even using the pre-outs.

So anyone trying to run 11 discrete channels will be disappointed. I believe the higher-end Denon models might do what you are looking for.

Yesterday I finally took the time to mount wide speakers and rerun a full Audyssey calibration. I did some testing with some movie and concert clips and I am really impressed with the way the wides "open up" the front soundstage and make it totally seamless, especially when playing at or near reference volume.

From now on I will only be using the back surrounds when playing movies with true discrete 7.1 content. For 5.1 (and less) content I will be using heights+wides.

The next thing to test will be for 7.1 sources do I prefer front height + rear surrounds, or front wide + rear surrounds? I suspect front wides will win the day but I haven't tested it yet.

Hi

Does the 1009 has screensaver. I cant find any imformation about that in the manual. Its importent as i have a plasma TV?

I don't remember a screen saver being mentioned in the manual. Plasma TVs are susceptible to "burn in" if you leave bright and static stuff there for a long period of time. As far as display protection technologies go a traditional screen saver might not be the optimal solution for plasmas (meaning a screen saver's main purpose is not specifically to protect plasma displays). Search google for "plasma burn in" and you'll get a more comprehensive knowledge about what "burn in" really is and how to prevent it from happening to our set. You don't have to look further than the top search hits.

I have another question. On the old 905 i had, i could push the cd button, tuner button etc directly on the remote and it turns on. On the 1009 i have to turn the amp on first and so choose input. On the 905 i could choose input directly even if it was off

Tried to play a flac file yesterday that was 192k/24bit and it fails. I thought the DACs in this were capable of 192Khz 24bit, does anyone know the limits of this receiver?

According "WhatHfi", the 5009 cant play flac files (192/24) either over DLNA

According to page 96 of the manual, it only supports FLAC up to 96kHz (8/16/24 bit), and it doesn't support FLAC at all for "remote playback".

P.S. I see no support for any format over 96 kHz, so I'm pretty sure a 192 kHz file will not work in any format on the 1009.

Thanks guys. I've sent an email to hdtracks.com to see if I can download the 96/24 version of the album instead without having to buy it again. That is what I get for not reading the manual before trying something new.

If that doesn't work out do a google search for "transcode FLAC 192 96" and you should be able to do it yourself with something like dbPowerAmp.

After 10 months onkyo has finally issued me a credit at a store where I bought the receiver from. Has there been any issues with this receiver. Heat and hdmi board problems were found on the 876. Im kinda pissed on how long it took them to take care of this and hesitant on purchasing another onkyo product if they are still having problems. Might see if I can put the credit towards a yamaha a1010 or a2010. Will god out tomorrow what I could do. Thanks for any info on this unit

Mine is maybe 14 weeks old no issues yet i idid have three 809 failures with hdmi though they went very fast and got exchanged straight away. So my thoughts on Onkyo service in the UK is good

Great to hear this unit is made better!! Looks like I'm getting a 1009 to replace an 876. Should be getting it next week, can't wait to get it setup and finally have my ht up and running again. I also got an extended warranty so I'm covered for 5 years

HDTracks.com credited my order for the 192/24 album so I can rebuy the 96/24 version. Works for me, but the 15% coupon I bought it with is expired so now I have to pay a little more or wait for the next sale. I also downloaded the conversion program maybe I'll try that.

This is my first Onkyo after owning Sherwood, Denon and B&K in the past. It works flawlessly and I don't have any overheating issues.

And i had the same experience with the 905...the 1009 realy rocks.

The biggest difference between the Onkyo 905 and 1009 is the heat. The 1009 is at best warm, but the 905 i swear i could have boils my eggs on it at the same volume...low volume that is
