PS3 Volume too low?

A search turned up hits for center channel or non-HDMI out results, but nothing I saw pertinent to general volume issues via HDMI.

I have a PS3 running Linear PCM to a Pioneer SC-37 via HDMI out, and the volume is veeeery low. Granted, I'm not running through terribly efficient speakers and am in a relatively large room, but my channel levels are adjusted correctly via MCACC. I'm finding myself having to run very near reference level (about -4 on Blu-Rays, and 0 or better on some DVD's, and the SC-37 isn't exactly lacking in power), just to get a reasonable listening experience.

I get the feeling it's not isolated just to this combination of components, as I used to have to crank down the volume when switching back to my TV cable input with my old setup, which was PS3 to Samsung TV, then optical out from the Samsung to a Denon 3801.

Am I cursed with a sub-par PS3 slim, or is this common among other users?

Yeah, that's just how it is. I have the SC-05 driving some pretty thirsty speakers (Gallo Ref 3.1) and I have to crank it up pretty high for movies myself (games are fine though). Have you tried raising the level on your PS3?

At +1 or +2 I was ok, anything higher added noticeable distortion.

I would not raise the levels at all on the ps3, because it was widely known that even +2 and even +1 would cause distortion. I'm using a slim as well and i know that most movies i have to run 5db higher than games. For TV i have to lower it 5d from my average game settings. So it could be a combination of different mixing levels plus the size of your room, speaker efficiency, and power of your amp.

It's irritating that I have to push things that hard just to get a usable output, especially when games don't seem to suffer the same fate as Mikazaru mentioned.

Really makes me lean towards either a HTPC or a BDP93 for future Blu-Ray watching.

You're probably going to still have the same issues. Besides, the ps3 is still probably the most versatile BD player there is.

Why would I still have the same issues? I had no problems with two other sources (Wii and cable box).

While in "theory" in shouldn't matter where you decode I find that PCM for movies is much quieter than when bitstreaming to my Yamaha RX-V3900 and have noticed similar things in many friends setups.

Since you have a slim and a capable AVR why aren't you bitstreaming? Frankly I don't trust the PS3 as it incorrectly flags too many game tracks using PCM because of the unique way it sends almost everything as 7.1 and then just sends blank info in the other channels.

Granted I have not noticed this with movies but again, I just don't trust the way the PS3 handles audio. I would be much more inclined to let your Pio Elite AVR decode rather than the PS3.

I can try either way, but was under the impression LPCM was the only way to deliver lossless audio.

That was only on the pre-slim models because they lacked the proper hardware. Slims are capable of bitstreaming lossless audio (non 3D)

Bitstream then turn Dynamic Range Compression to full on your amp. Bam you're a happy camper
