I thought you posted in another Onkyo thread that you got the 5508 free as a replacement for an older Onkyo . Or was that a different Onkyo?

Onkyo gave me a 5009 receiver to replaced the 905

I bought the 5508 preamp after I sold the 885

Curiously of like six Onkyos products I have owned the 885 is the ONLY one that never had any issues

The 875...two of them both had failed HDMI boards...the 807 had a failed HDMI board and replaced under warranty with another unit...the 905 had a failed HDMI board and a few other issues and replaced under warranty with another unit...the 885 no issues...the 5508 had the "wire" issue and about a week ago had an HDMI "hiccup". Time will tell on that one ..I did buy the extended warranty on the 5508

On another note..I bought a used 875 for $40.00. The guy said it had a failed HDMI board with no video so he wasjunking it...probably after getting an $800 estimate from an A/V shop
I got it home hooked it up and it works perfectly..lol

It may fail at at time ...but was fine when I was running a few months ago at the old house prior to my move

Barely 9 pages and not much enthusiasm going around. No love for this preamp?? I've been thinking about upgrading from my 5507 so I've been trying to find out what people think about their units. Seems to be a lot more activity over at the Integra aisle.

It may be because it is not much different than that 5508 and the 5509 is over a year old.
Initially it was only released in Europe. It's like releasing a movie to disk 2 years after release.
People forget about it.

Onkyo decided to PUSH the Integra version via its dealer network.
Since the 5509 is not available in the US, I think we can guess that that did not work out for them.
Who could have guessed that excluding the largest market might have a negative impact on sales?

No news on the next PR-SC5510? Is Onkyo avoiding the competition from the Marantz AV8801? I presumed it was going to be out by now.

This french shop has it on the website, expected within 30 days. 2,999 euros. Would you believe they use the photo of a 5508 for rear view? And according to the text, it has 9.2 pre-outs only (it's supposed to do 11.4 pre-outs). Hence the info must be wrong.

The 5509 is currently available in the US. Is the next version expected sometime soon? So now is not particularly a good time to buy?

I posted something similar in the 80.3 thread, but basically I'm interested in getting Audyssey XT32, but the 8801 even discounted is too much to pay IMO. Anyone with a good cheap price for a new SC5509? Please PM me!

I'll probably try and read this whole thread over the next little while, but some questions for the experts out there in the meantime:

a) Where is the 5509 manufactured? China, or possibly still Japan? (My AV7005 was made in Japan, and I do like that about it.)

b) I've heard that it's difficult to upgrade the f/w of Onkyo gear, is that still true? For the AV7005, I just temporarily hook up an ethernet cable to my router, and it has an upgrade option within the menu system. Easy.

c) Any current/outstanding problem areas for the 5509? I keep seeing issues with HDMI boards, but is that old news?

I do not have the 5509 but my friend Bruce (voigtskins) has one and he is very happy with it. Bruce had the 3008 before the 5509 and he says the 5509 runs much cooler than the 3008.

a) The back panel indicates the 5509 is made in Malaysia.

b) When Bruce first got the 5509 he did a FW upgrade that was direct from Onkyo and he said it went fine.

c) I haven't read of any issues with xx09 or xx10 AVRs or prepros. But I haven't read many of the recent Onkyo threads so you might want to ask in those threads.

I am not aware of any issues with the 5509 / DHC80.3. My 80.3 does put out a fair bit of heat, back right which I believe is video processing. Can bypass but not turn off video processing.
Regarding FW updates, no issues with my Onkyo or Integra. The Denon on the other hand....

I had the 5508, firmware updates are done via the internet. There is a "check for updates" and when one is available, takes no longer than 10 minutes. Very easy.

Bill - I was wondering which way you went. I am reading this thread from the beg and saw that you were looking into this one. And I know you had looked at Denon/Marantz at one point, and then I checked your signature and saw that you indeed did get XT32 with a Denon 4311. I just can't get past buying an AVR and not using its amps. I joked to a friend once, that I just can't pay less ... for more! But if I'm not going to use that "more" ...

Bottom line is that I can get the 5509 for about $550 cheaper than the 8801, and I'm just not sure I can justify that difference for the 8801 even though I have an AV7005 and I haven't had a single problem with it.

And I'm still personally peeved at how Marantz tries to make you pay a premium for XT32 for the 8801 vs the 7701/AV7005, when I don't personally believe that they are all that different inside.

Just finished the thread. I didn't realize that the 5509 had only been available in the US for about the last 6 months. Seems like Onkyo/Integra was fairly successful in driving people who couldn't wait to the 80.3. And now the 5510 is on the horizon. Funny. But I really only care about XT32 too. I need to look at the last 6 months of the 80.3 thread now ...

I auditioned the Anthem vs the Integra about 2 years ago

My ears didnt exactly agree with the Integra sounding better...especially for 2 channel music listening

However...neither could I justify 3x the price for the Anthem

I have had my Onkyo-5509 since December and have had NO PROBLEMS with the Audio or Video.I had a fan that I used on my 3008 because the unit ran sooo HOT on top of the 5509 but removed the fan and the 5509 runs cool.I love the 5509 as it does not CLICK like my 3008 and only clicks when turned on and I also use the triggers to my Emotiva Xpa-2 and XPA-5 amps without any problems.I have a OPPO-103 which I use in DSD mode for my SACD and the 5509 also has DSD so the sound for my SACD'S is AWESOME.My CD collection sounds great using DIRECT MODE or PURE AUDIO and Audyssey XT 32 Has done wonders for my 2 Subs tuning them in to my system.The Onkyo 5509 is the best PRE PRO that I have had in my system and I am glad I did not continue to wait fot the EMOTIVA XMC-1 which is STILL not released.
