Sort of like my early days in computers, when a computer meant a mainframe - IBM 370, Univac/Unisys 1100, CDC 6600, etc. They were in locked rooms, the hardware off limits to the majority of its users. I don't remember how many times I would be in the computer center at my university (multiple universities in my case) peering through the windows, longing just to touch the machine.
Fortunately, I later got to be a member of a computer center staff, and allowed in the computer room. The first time I did that, I asked the operator if it was OK if I could just touch the box. He said OK, I did - there was something satisfying to have some tactile feeling of the real hardware I was using. It helped getting that out of my system, wasn't such a big deal afterward.
