I was not surprised about the phone call at the end. It was stated as late as a week or so ago that The Machine is built to grow and learn and evolve. After Reese talked to The Machine, you wanted know what it was going to do. It is now thinking about it!
Since it now knows its existence has been compromised, has it evolved enough to show compassion toward Finch or does it now consider Reese a threat. The Machine's response could lead you to go in either direction.
Didn't see ROOT at the end coming though even though I was looking for that connection. They sure tied up a lot of loose ends in a fairly convincing way. I mean it is a fantasy so you have to suspend some belief to make it work.
I had thought that Reese was going to be shot and you wouldn't know how he survives but that was too predictable and I am glad they didn't go in that direction. Finch's situation is more dramatic and makes for a better episode.
They have certainly set things up for a good second season. This was their best episode so far. During the HR/FBI chase sequence in the hotel, I had no idea where it would lead or end. I figured it would end badly for HR and the FBI, a classic case of everyone converging on the same spot at the same time for the same reason and not knowing the other was there and just getting in the others way. Now that Fusco and Carter know about each other, that adds a whole new dynamic, especially with the Finch situation. Looks like the sky is the limit at this point.
