According to LG, this new upgrade in technology has come at a point after all the above. More up todate answers and tests are required. I currently have the LG 55LV9500, 3D Active, and have on order the 55LW9800 Passive. Once I have both, I will be able to compare for myself.

I myself am a bit confused about the 4 smaller lines, what exactly do you mean? And also what you mean about the "new technology"...are you refering to the new FW? The new FW has been implemented onto the lw5600 and the lw6500 since months ago(still to see the lw9800) and the difference it makes is negligible. I can see the horizontal lines of the grid on both models when i go to the retail shops. The lines become invisible if you stand significantly back but then the 3d wow effect is not so great. However my mate who was there with me could not see the lines from the distance i could and therefeore i say that the whole lines thing is subjective as it has to do with how the brain mixes the data it receives which in total is 1080p but the lines cause jaggies(like a crt tv) wich is a bit annoying for me.

edit: just saw the cnet's Katzmaier response and will have to agree with him in the technical issues but personally i can't stand the active 3d as i get dizzy after a while so will have to go with the passive.

Before the Cinema 3D technology worked like this: During a time period of 1/200 seconds the TV showed 2 frames; 540 lines for the left eye and 540 lines for the right eye.
The new algorithm shows 4 frames instead of 2 during the 1/200 second time frame. It shows 1080i for the left eye and 1080i for the right eye.

When these are combined the two pictures create a 1080p picture according to LG. LG believes that this update improves picture quality on their Cinema 3D TVs to compete directly with the active 3D TVs such as 3D plasma TVs. You need to turn off TruMotion to utilize the new algorithm. See the illustration below.

Maybe i don't understand, but those 1 pixel wide horizontal black lines are constantly there. They never move or disappear. it's a hardware fact. the polarized glasses in combination with the opposite polarized film applied to the screen puts those black lines there for each eye. I learned this fact in high school physics. they don't change or move around with speed. Therefore the stair step and softness is there with the current displays and passive technology.

Ummm this articles don't prove anything. Haha the cnet reviewer says " I like active better " which is all opinion and then says " I haven't done any lab tests of either of these tvs" so they are just giving there opinion again. And the other article is from rival Sony. Of coarse they are going to say active is better. Until passive tvs sell more then they come out with one.

As I stated in other threads, the Cnet article sees things that indicate a bias in favor of passive in the "technical" article passive fans are linking to all over the place. Sorry for repeating this again but here goes.

I do not buy the conclusions of the above study because he omitted Samsung UN55D8000, the Sony XBR-HX929, and most 2011 plasmas that have very little apparent crosstalk. He also tested small size screen (46" and 47") which give advantage to passive resolution and show less line grid (jaggy line and softness) visibility. So no matter how technical the tests were they are biased automatically.

So the study is biased toward passive. I don't, of course, know if the bias was intentional.

I guess I can understand the argument of both sides. I'm just waiting for the z screen tvs to come out.

Yep, that is exactly my understanding of how the FW works. However what it can't do is make the lines disappear so the new FW is only so they can claim that since eack eye receives the data of a full 1080i therefore we can call it fullhd 3d. But in reality is not as the lines are there constantly.

I was looking at a thread over at home theather shack and found some interesting info..

The uk 980t version of this television is full array backlit and if you look at this link in specifications and then look at display options you will see 288 blocks of local dimming zoness so all is good and this info we alll knew

However as has been pointed out over at home theater shack if you look at canadas lg website for the 9800 tv that we are getting for the usa you will see something different

LG probably outsourced the spec translation to somebody in India.

Well now that i look closer at the site that picture and text they use are the same they are useing for the 5600 and 6500 which are edgelit so hopefully someone like you said.. just made a mistake and put that same text and pic for the 9800 bye mistake

Went back and read their Info - someone who does their web work is either lazy and cuts and pastes whatever, or LG gave them a bunch of info and told the web guys to sort through it all and throw something together. Other option, throw in anything that you can't be nailed for after.

That's some discomforting news! For the price they want for this set it had better be full array! I'll say one thing; if the 9800 is in fact edge-lit it will make my choice a little easier (i.e. go with the 5600 series for half the price)

Don't worry its a typo. From the same Canadian site if you look at Specifications (expand all) it says Nano Lighting Technology: Yes and on the same page if you click on the pdf spec sheet http://www.lg.com/ca_en/products/doc...%20English.pdf you will read :

I also think it's already got THX certified for 3d so is not pending anymore.

Does anybody know if this set will have the glossy (aka mirror like) screen instead of matte? I think that might be the deal breaker for me and force me to get this years 55LW5600 and just deal with the edge lit inadequacies, since it seems like that's really the only thing this new set is addressing (unless i'm wrong?)

Did any reviews of this tv hit yet. I'm torn between waiting for this tv or getting a hx929 or panasonic pvt30

Nope, You still can't buy it anywhere. At least in the US. I haven't heard when it will be available either.

I'm waiting for review of this model as well. Almost bought 55LW6500 the other day but then I heard about this model and been patiently waiting for some reviews and availability.

I'm thinking I'm still gonna get the 55lw6500. You Will probable be able to buy 2 of them for the cost of the 55lw9800. That and I think the 9800 comes with a glossy screen which might be the deal breaker from what I've been able look up.

True. Price is definitely a concern that's why I am waiting to read some reviews and see if it is really worth it or not.

No separate note, there is an amazing deal on Panasonic 55VT30 (top 3D TV on my list before LG) going on at US-Appliances which is making the decision even more difficult.

I have noticed a lot of talk about dual play with the LW980T, does anyone know if this going to be part of the LW9800 model? It isn't listed on the LG US website as a feature.

Are they completely different models? Will the 980T come to the US? I can't find any information either way on it.

Isn't 'Dual Play' simply the old '2 x left lenses in one pair of glasses, 2 x right lenses in the other pair and run SBS/Top-bottom 3D' trick? If so, this has already been done by users on AVS - you can do this with any Polarized 3D TV. Basically take two pairs of passive glasses, pop out and swap the right lenses between the glasses (or left). In any game with split screen, switch to 3D mode (side-by-side or top-bottom as appropriate), then Player 1 only sees his/her screen, ditto for Player 2.

Yeah if I were looking for a polarized 3D TV right now, I'd also definitely want to see the 9800 before making a decision... (Very happy with my 6500 though I wonder if the 9800's screen surface will control reflections as well as the Samsung glossy screens? That would be nice.

Potentially I wasn't sure, they list it specifically as a feature for the 980T, but there is no mention for the LW9800. If it's simply turning on a feature on the console and just swapping the glass lenses that doesn't affect my decision then :P

The other challenge is the price, everyone has the 6500 (and 5600) on sale right now, but most of those sales last tile like oct 1 or 4th, It would suck to see the 9800 and decide its not worth the cost and now the 6500/5600 is $500 bucks more...
