Official Sony VPL-HW30(A)ES Owners Thread - Page 69

hi guys,
I'm hesitating between the hw30 and the acer h9500bd,1000euros cheaper(here in Europe).
Is there a significant upgrade if I go on the hw 30 instead of the acer considering image quality etc? If some of you saw both of them, that'd be great to let me know about your feedbacks.

Anyone have luck getting a Harmony remote to change inputs with the HW30?

I see some posts from a while ago, but they seem to involve using another remote to learn a code or a remote other than the Harmony.

The Harmony doesn't seem to generate a discrete code. Rather, it seems to try and use arrows. But it doesn't work correctly...

I'll play with it some more and a report back. I'll also see about trying another Sony projector.

The other remote you need is a cheap all in one remote from Radio Shack that can learn discrete codes and then you teach the learned command to your harmony. I had to do this years ago (2006) with a Sony TV.

Thanks Mike. I've got some good news for Harmony owners. Use the Sony VPL-60 projector and you get the following as discrete video inputs

1) InputA selects, well, Input A (aka VGA)
2) InputVideo2 selects Component
3) InputS-Video2 selects HDMI1
4) InputHdmi selects HDMI2

I forgot I had an old Sony universal remote (RM-VL900). I had it learn these codes and now I'm going to teach them to my 880. This way they appear with the other HW30 codes.

Hope this helps someone.

Awesome find! I'm going to try adding the VPL-60 to one of my 880's and then have my 890 (which controls the HW30) learn the discrete inputs from it.

I thought you defected to the jvc? Funny seeing you still hanging around in the Sony threads...

Glad to hear it is useful. Post back with your results. It will be nice to get a separate verification.

Hey joerod,
As someone who has spent time with every sony projector made in the last few years, can you put a percentage of improvement on moving from the VW60 I have now to the HW30? I have a 119" Daylite Flat Matt screen and am thinking about going a little bigger and maybe moving up to a 1.3 gain but I think the VW60 is pretty much at it's limit. We just recently moved so I'm building a whole new theater. I haven't had an oppertunity to view this projector yet and would really value your opinion.

Thanks,
JT

I am no fan boy of any product. I fell the Sony's are better if they are bright enough and you sit about 1.5 screen widths or more away.

Just got done setting up my Harmony 890 with the discrete inputs. I added the VPL-60 to one of my 880s, then just learned the 4 inputs to my 890. I then had to go into the HW30 device on the 890 and tell it that the original remote had the discrete input buttons. From here I assigned the learned buttons to each of the inputs.

After doing this, I did a quick test, and everything worked perfectly!!! Thanks for the find MadMyers!

The percentage could vary quite a bit depending on if you plan to dive into 3D. If that is a yes then the HW30 does excellent 3D and it is a great one to start with. It will still be brighter than your 60 in 2D and I would say the motion is improved as well as sharpness. I truly liked my Black Pearl 60 but the 30 is definitely a step above these days. With 3D usage 33% higher. WIth 2D only I'd say 23%. Both combined 39%!

Thanks for the reply, that's exactly what I was looking for. The wife should be able to see a 23% inprovement right? 3D would require a Blu-Ray player and receiver upgrade so it's not an urgent need but would like to get there sometime in the not to distant future. I'm about 3 hours away in Ohio and am tempted to trek out and see your VW 1000 but it would probably ruin me since that one is out of the budget range.

I agree with Joe. I upgraded from the black pearl to a Sony 95, but I spent a few hours with the 30 at a local dealer. I felt it was brighter, the colors were better had more "pop" and was definitely sharper. Throw in 3d and it's a definite upgrade. If your wife is anything like mine, she won't see much of a difference, but will lie and say she does. Although she really loves 3d, that alone was worth the upgrade for us. I am only about an hour from Joe, and plan to go see the 1000. It's totally out of my budget, I stretched to get the 95, so I know I won't be tempted, but it will be cool to see.
Cheers,
Matt

I sent a private message to Breniac, but get no answer. Don't know if he's still active in this forum. He had the same 6-blink shutdown error on the HW-30 as I did two times (during total of 200 hours) with a VW-95ES.

This is the question, maybe someone ran in to the same problem?

"I have the VW-95ES and during 200 hours I have gotten the sudden shutdown with repeating 6 blinks from the On/Standby lamp. I noticed in the HW-30 thread you had the same problem?

I called Sony and they wanted me to send it to them for a check-up, but they said it would probably be difficult to replicate the problem since it only happened twice during those 200 hours. I told them I wanted to try some things before sending it. Replaced the power cable and bypassed my HDMI-switch, connecting the HDMI cable directly into my Oppo BDP-93EU.

Have you found out anything more about this problem?"

Haha anytime. The more the merrier. As for 3D all you need to do is get the Panasonic 310 with dual HDMI outs and send one to your 30 and the other to your Non 3D receiver. The Panny can be had for about 170 to 179 on most days.

And if you get it quick, you may still be able to sell the copy of Avatar for ~100

Looks like I have until the end of the month for the Avatar 3D deal, but then again I'm apparently one of the few who really like this movie so I'd have to hang on to it. It's interesting that a gazillion people went to see this movie multiple times yet very few seem to want to admit they liked it.

Although because the exclusivity ends at the end of the month, you may be able to turn it, and buy it retail soon. However, no release date has been announced.

Personally, I've sold about 6 3D blu rays from various mail in promotions from hardware for $900 All but Avatar (which I've sold 2 of) are available at retail now..

How does the HW30 perform with ambient light?
Just clicked "Place Order" on this puppy. Thanks to all for the great info. I feel like I made the right choice for me in going for the HW30.
Mine just arrived. Will be setting it up this weekend. I was able to obtain the filters for the BR50s for free from Sony. I just called the number, gave them the KB article number and told them I needed three sets. The filters took less than a week to get here.

I have a light controlled room with dark walls and ceiling. I will be throwing a 100-in image, 16:9, on Elite Cinetension2 CineWhite 1.1 screen. Hopefully 3D is bright enough on the smaller screen.

The HW30 is replacing an Epson ProCinema 1080UB. It was a great unit but I figured it was time to sell it before I put the new bulb in it. Sold it locally to another enthusiast just getting started with a projection set up.

Can't wait to get the HW30 going. I am sure the kids are going to want to rewatch Tron Legacy this weekend.

ditto on the ambient light question..... Need to know as kinect needs decent ambient light to work properly.
