I'm not expecting you to see blacks like the 95, but just curious if you have experimented with the iris close reg? It did improve the black level/contrast for me when I lowered it by between 10 and 30 positions (experimenting with it and the open reg seems to make a difference).

On that note, can anyone tell us what the iris open/close reg defaults are on the 95 (for fun/experimentation)?

Oh it helped a lot Jason! I went from AE7000 to RS-45 to finally settle on the HW30 thanks to you in depth, real world reviews.

I was ready to purchase a Benq W7000 but it looks like the black level is only average then I was looking at the Epson 5010 and now I'm looking into the Sony HW30aes. My question is how do the blacks look compared to the Epson 5010. Also does the HW30 put out a sharp picture. It looks to me the HW30 is a well rounded 3D projector. I would be projecting onto a Elite sable 110" 1.1 gain screen in a light controlled room. Projector will be ceiling mounted 14'-15' from the screen at 7' high. I got to get this right the first time so sorry for all the questions. I just want a sharp image with great black levels that pops. I also want the 3D effect to look decent. I did actually mess with the service menu. I actually just reset it back to factory yesterday. Even though the blacks improve, during dark scenes with something light, it still looks murky. Awesome projector though. All i'm missing is better blacks.

What's the closest U guys placed that projector at? According to the chart I can put it as close as 11'2" from my 106" screen. I'm concerned about it being at max zoom and possible distortions on the periphery, but would like to maximize brightness in 3D. Anybody had to move it father away for any reasons?

I have a 133" high power 16x9 screen, and the projector is about 15'8" back and it looks great

Well, look like U are 2 feet away from your closest throw distance - anybody at the minimal?

i believe i read in projector centrals' review that the sony only drops slightly from max throw.

Apparently it only drops 13% from min to max zoom

I measured mine a while ago and I know i'm at the 'minimum' throw - @11 feet to my 106" screen and it looks awesome!
I measured in advance prior to ordering my screen to ensure I could get the largest screen for the distance between the seats and the screen.
Mind you - all my measurements were for the HW20 and I upgraded to the 30 'believing' the same distance requirements would remain the same.

When I set up the 30 I had it 16' back from a 140" 16:9 1.0 Gain AT SMX screen and it threw a great picture. Plenty bright.

OK, I've got a question about additional 3D glasses for this projector. I purchased the HW30-AES model which comes with the 3D emitter and 2 pairs of glasses. The model # on these glasses is TDG-PJ1. Yesterday I placed an order on Sony's retail site for 2 pairs of glasses that appeared to be identical and also carry the same 30 hour charge. The model # of these, however, is listed as TDGBR250/B. They were on sale for $50 each (half price) so I grabbed 2. I have been unable to determine if these will work with the pj. Anybody know if they are identical?

Hi, these look similar, but are not the same glasses. The main difference is that the TDG-PJ1 work out of the box with the HW30. The BR250's will need a filter kit from Sony.

I've posted the part #'s in this thread a few times, I'll try to see if I can find it.

these are the filter's you'll need. they just snap into the front of the glasses..

Appreciate the quick response. So is $73 for each set of glasses a decent price? It seems like these things are very expensive...I actually wanted to get 8 total, but not at these prices. Can you buy additional TDG-PJ1's for less money or a comparable cost without the hassle of this filter kit? The manual for the pj is pretty vague when discussing compatibility of 3D glasses.

Just got off the phone with a Sony rep, and she could not confirm this info (big surprise...they never seem to have answers I need). She did, however, tell me that they would send me these filter kits for free if the glasses don't work (if they have blur, ghosting, etc). So will they work but with problems such as these, or will they simply not work at all? Another tech person at Sony now claims that the kit will not solve all the compatibility issues. I guess I will have to see when they get here...

The TDG-PJ1's looks to be selling for under $100 these days. I would check with AVS to see if they carry them as well.

A cheaper option is the Monster Vision 3D glasses. These can used at the same time as the Sony glasses. It has an RF transmitter and can run any many glasses off the 1 transmitter as you want.

OK, so in order to use the Monster glasses I would need to set up another 3D emitter? Is that accurate?

And can you confirm that they are 100% as effective as the Sony glasses?

you'll still need the original Sony emitter which sends the signal to the Monster Vision RF transmitter via a small IR receiver. The RF transmitter needs to be powered, a typical USB blackberry charger will do the trick.

The MV3D's are at least as effective as the Sony glasses, if not more. Try to look for some posts of mine early in this thread, I showed some comparisons of the MV3D's vs the Sony glasses and was able to reduce ghosting in certain tough movies a bit by tweaking the RF transmitter.

The device can be adjusted manually or with a laptop/software program. Adjusting manually only takes a few minutes of experimenting until 3D looks great.

These glasses are also much more comfortable than the factory Sony's in my opinion.

I had to call monster as my order would not go thru Paypal correctly. I was told that Monster has officially discontinued all 3D glasses and is not going to sell a new model. The rep was shocked out of her mind on the price when I gave her the SKU number. She paid much more for her own glasses with a huge employee discount. Anyway, she said they did have a lot of them in inventory still.

IMHO, these glasses are radically superior to the Sony's that come with the 30 and my 95. I do not work for Monster but quite seriously, at this price it is a no brainer to purchase. I went so far as to wait until I have order confirmation before I posted this here. Me fist all you all later. Yep, selfish but I can deal with my guilt.

Thanks for all the help! I ordered 2 of the Monster glasses with free shipping AND found a 10% coupon (news10off2011) which brought them down to $107! I will contact Sony when the others arrive and have them send me out a couple of those kits...hopefully they work as well once I've added those.

Why sometimes I see the picture seems a little flickering or flashing to be more precise? (in 2d mode) is a slight and continuous variation of the brightness.
This generally occurs in a portion of the image, it's very light but sometimes I see it.
It happens very rarely.
For example, in a scene where we see a landscape with a beach, you see the sand that pulses or blinks slightly, like a monitor with a refresh of the image slowly ..
Have you ever noticed?

Awesome - that what I wanted to hear - I also have 106" screen and will move it to 11" mark - I was afraid it can cause some distortions.

I discovered that it is caused by the motion flow ...
this problem appears in particular situations, but if I remove the motion flow the problem goes away ..

I've had this happen the odd time in the first couple of 100 hours of use. In my case it was not motion flow and putting the lamp into high for an hour or so (and then back to low) seemed to fix it and I've not seen it since. If your lamp is on high it may be something else of course.

anyone know of somone that needs glasses for this projector? I Have some 250 and 50's with the filters that I would love to trade with someone for dlp link instead.

thanks for the answer.
In my case the fault disappears by turning off the motion flow .. However, my lamp is set to low.
The flaw that I have described, however, affects only a portion of the image, one that puts into motion flow difficulties and generates the defect described by me.
I already read in the past that the lamp always kept on low can generate the type of defect that I described all over the screen and occasionally recommend putting it on high .. I'll keep this.

Thanks for the info, I jumped on 4 pair and the 10% discount code still works! I wish I knew how long this deal was going to last and how well I'm going to like these. My theater which seats 9 is not finished so I won't even be able to test them for a while. It sounds like most prefer the Monster glasses over the Sony's so I'm counting on those opinions. Kind of interesting that they have only a single star review on these right on their own website but it's based on the customer service instead of the actual product. Still the marketing people must be sleeping....

A shame that it's a US only offer.

I posted this over in the Monster Vision thread, but I'm not sure everyone here that uses those glasses follows it, anyways sorry for the cross post, but here it goes:

So I got my 2 pair of MV3Ds today, but am having problems getting the transmitter power with the IR plugged in.

when I plug in just the power to a PC, cell phone charger, IPad charger, or Panasonic Plasma, the leds on the transmitter flash across in red, as soon as plug in the IR cable (which is difficult to get in all the way), the LEDs go out immediately, if I wiggle it around a little bit the leds start flashing back and forth again, but it's because the IR cable isn't seated all the way.

On both my Windows 7 laptop and my Panasonic TV, I got messages about USB power overload.

Any ideas what's going on here? I'm seeing the exact same thing with both transmitters and IR cables... BTW, I flashed to the VIP FW before I tried anything.

browerjs, if you haven't figured it out make sure that IR receiver plugged is pushed all the way in the transmitter... you will feel like you are going to break but give a good push and everything will work fine.
