Thanks! It does look real nice - especially for the price.

Another week - update on my repair. As I suspected, they did not contact me back with more information or an ETA. Instead, I called Laredo again today.

They still don't know how long it'd take for the parts to come into stock. He said "a long time". Supposedly a supervisor is going to be contacting me. Again, not holding my breath - I'm assuming I'll just call them again in a week for the same runaround.

That is terrible and unacceptable.

I thought there was a special "Sony Cares" number you could call and get in touch wtih people that can actually make things happen. Unfortunately, I searched this forum and didn't find it.

Am I making this up? Anyone have the number to help out NNate (if he chooses to call them).

I found an e-mail address: SonyListens@am.sony.com. I found this posted around the internet. I will probably give them a day or two and then fire off an e-mail to that account. Of course, a phone number would be more useful, I'm sure.

Ah! Sony Listens... Not Cares wink.gif

Honestly, I've heard they will contact you pretty quickly.

Did anyone move up from the VWPro1/HW20 to the HW30? How is the contrast and shadow detail? Was it an improvement pr a step backward to increase brightness? How does it compare to any of the older JVC series, such as RS2, RS10 or RS15?

Here are the contrast specs: HW20 - 85k:1 vs. HW30 - 70k:1. Seems like HW20 is better for watching sci-fi.

Thanks.
Yeah, they clearly don't care... Maybe they'll at least listen

i sold my HW20/Pro1 to get the HW30 specifically for the 3D. I loved the PRO1 but love the HW30 more (since the 3D). I don't see any difference but, perceptually, believe the blacks are darker. Brightness is the same or better (it's been a while since I had the PRO1).

If you can get a great deal on the PRO1 and don't need/want 3D then go for it. I sold my 73" Mitsy 3D TV in order to use one device for all my viewing and, even SciFi, I am thrilled.
Wryker,

Glad you liked it. Coming from a JVC, I'm well aware of the Sony trade-off. Will opt for the HW20 since I do not need the HW30 3D. Not sure if Sony, like other JVC models, sacrifice brightness over contrast.

Thanks.

Just sent a long, detailed e-mail to the SonyListens e-mail account. I'll update when I hear back.
Hopefully they replied already? And overnighted you a new hw50 as a substitute? And you have been watching it and haven't had time to post this great news?

Hopefully?

I got a call from a supervisor over at Laredo this morning - I doubt it's a coincidence that it's the day after I sent my long e-mail... I missed the call, but have a voicemail. They said they're willing to ship me a brand new HW30. I need to call them back sometime this morning.

I don't know that I could realistically ask for the HW50. I did mention that in my long e-mail, however.

OK, I can confirm it was no coincidence that I got a call from Laredo after contacting SonyListens. I just got an e-mail from them too - basically just saying they talked to Laredo.

Well, they're sending me a brand new HW30 with overnight shipping. Hopefully I'll have it by Tuesday (might have missed the shipment today).

Excellent! I feel your pain the whole delay caused, but the outcome seems quite good... I'd like a new unit over a repaired one any day. I'm always scared of repairs...

Question about 3D transmitter wiring:

I have some difficulties to pull an Ethernet wire through my ceiling. I was wondering if there is a chance to re-purpose an existing video cable. It has 6 shielded wires.
Does anyone know the 3D transmitter wiring? I am guessing that it is not a true Ethernet communication. Does it use all 4 pairs?

They said they only changed the Inter Key Delay to 0 and the Inter Device Delay to 3000. When I deleted the projector, added it back in, and changed those two delays, it stopped working. So they changed something else that was needed to make this work. I'm waiting for them to respond back. But since they set my incident to "solved" I may have to open up another problem to get them to look at it again. I'll give them a few days to respond back before I do that.

Joe,

Why are you worried about powering off the projector via the harmony remote ? It is a pain that the projectors want this double power toggle when the rest of the devices

manage to get by with one. It is not as if it is going to do any damage if it gets powered off accidentally. You just have to wait for it to cool down before you can power it back up again. Unless I'm missing something.

Hate to bring back an old post. However, I wanted to confirm that this solves the issue. I upgraded my H688 to a H650 while at the same time I upgraded my receiver. Since then I can't power off the projector anymore. I can do it through the help procedures.
I have all HDMI power mgmt. turned off.
I will confirm that when I turn on my system to watch anything (movie etc) the PJ is first to power on.
Metropole,
I haven't been in this form for a while (Been too busy watching the HW30 :-). The fix that I have been using is to use a power off command from another Sony projector (VW 50). Turns out there are two different power off command. The first one takes two power off commands to turn the projector off. The second powers off the projector in one shot (you don't see the power off warning screen). What I did was copy the power off command from the VW50 to a learning remote, and learn that command under the HW30.

Does this projector suffer bad convergence like epson 3020 model does ?
Epson 5020ub/3020 or HW30 - which picture is better ?

Anyone ever notice a flicker in really bright scenes? It just started on mine..... It only happens with 1080p material. I have had it for almost a year. Not sure if it is the bulb or a HDMI problem? Any suggestions before buying a new bulb...

I have the 50ES and saw some flickering. The recommendation was to run the lamp in high mode for about an hour and them switch it back to low mode. Worked so far for me.

It uses 3 1/2 pairs (7 wires), skipping only rj45 pin 5. If you are desperate, you can skip pin 6 which is the adjustable emitter strength lead and that would let you run with only 6 wires.

1 & 2: +12VDC power
3: EMIT_DET
4: EMIT_SYNC
5: n/a
6: EMIT_STR
7 & 8: GND

You can have a look on the complete pinout of this RJ45 socket in the middle of page #149 (connector reference CN1101).

I just bought a Sony VPL-HW30ES projector, tried to start it up for the first time, the green On/Standby light started to blink, then it started blinking red in cycles of 12 blinks.
Tried the Norwegian Sony support, but they could not help me mad.gif , is there anybody out there who has had the same problem, or knows what to do?
I have tried starting the pj with different HDMI connected (after reading here that it could be some HDMI problem), tried direct connection to the BD-payer and without any HDMI connected to the pj at all. With no luck.

Still the same. when I press the powerbutton the green light starts flashing and a "click" from a relay is heard. Then another "click" and the cycle of 12 red blink started. (12 blink pause 12blink.....)

Update 3/7/2012... I've completely edited this post because I found out the information I posted last night wasn't accurate.

I originally posted that changing the Standby Mode on the projector would solve the problem, assuming you have an Onkyo receiver. Unfortunately, I was able to show last night that this doesn't always solve the problem for me.

Also, if you don't have an Onkyo... then i suspect you have the some sort of HDMI switcher between the projector and our video sources. Try running directly to the HW30 and see if the problem goes away.

yes - what Receiver do you have connected to it?
Its a Yamaha RX A1020 and a Yamaha BD player
post #2939 of 2970
Try this... it will help me with my own investigation. It sounds silly, but please perform each step exactly.

1) Remove AC power from HW30. I mean "remove the plug".
2) Remove all HDMI inputs from HW30
3) Apply AC power to HW30 (insert the plug), but DO NOT power it on
4) Wait 60 seconds (don't shortchange this)
5) Connect HDMI input(s)
6) Now try powering on the HW30. Let us know what you find...

Hopefully it will work this time and each time after. I know the steps seem wasteful / unnecessary... but please follow them exactly.
Still the same, had the BD player connected directly to the PJ
