Gears of War 3 is in 3D?!

At least according to IGN:

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/118/1187836p1.html

I've read a ton of previews and none of them mentioned stereoscopic support. I didn't see this coming at all, I greatly look forward to seeing how this looks on my UN55D7000 (even though IGN said the 3D looked ridiculous in some parts).

eeeww. 3D is SD resolution. No thanks. I can't even watch ESPN 3D.

Is it really SD? If so, FAIL.

Also, this just occurred to me. ESPN 3D is SD?! If so, EPIC GAMES FAIL!

I play all the available 3D games for Xbox 360 and PS3 in 3D on my 82" DLP and they are not in standard definition. True they are not as bright and have lower resolution but the 3D effect more than makes up for it. Currently I am playing Dead Space 2 in 3D on my PC with Nvidia 3D connected to the TV in 1920x1080 resolution and the 3D is awesome.

Gears of War 3 should be great in 3D.
NSX1992 you have a 82" TV, everything is going to loook better in 3d . As for gears getting 3d I'm not surprised, it being lower resolution not surprised there ether. It seems the big gfx games take a hit in 3d, killzone 3, COD both of these games take a resolution hit. They still look good but I did notice the games not looking its best in 3d.
What's worse, it's not rendering in stereoscopic like Black Ops - it's using post processing to get the 3D effect. It was an afterthought addition and that's why they have to lower the resolution to have enough time every frame left over for the post processing.

FAIL.

Black Ops' resolution hit isn't just to reduce the performance hit, but also because it renders in side by side mode (I wish it could do checkerboard for my DLP TV, which would look better, instead I have to checkerboard the side by side with my mitsu converter box).

Where did you read that it's faux 3D? Also, games that opt for faux 3D (Crysis 2, SOCOM 4) haven't suffered much of a resolution or performance hit.
Socom 4 isn't true stereoscopic 3d?

And yes, the 3d in Crysis 2 took way less processing power than true stereoscopic 3d.
Yep, SOCOM's not native. It doesn't look bad though. Then again, I can't remember why I turned it off so early into the gameplay.

I see where BioSehnsucht was coming from about Gears being post-processed after I read this article... but that was not the intended meaning, IMO.

It also forces the game to run at a lower resolution. "It's a little bit jaggier in certain areas," Fergusson said. But the difference is "not huge". "Instead of 720p you're at five something," he explained.

"It was something that came in really late in our process. It wasn't something where we said, OK, we're going to design the game from the ground up for 3D. It was more of a post-process 3D, where we're like, OK, certain things need to be adjusted, but for the most part it generally works.

He's talking about the development process occurring late.
Indeed. All that needs to be done is add an extra "camera" perspective to the environment. Post processing makes no sense. I'm sure the intended meaning was that it came late in development process.

I'm stoked that this game is offering 3D. If it's terrible, just play in 2d. No harm in having the choice.

My only concern is whether Gears 3 will offer onlyt Trivoz 3D and not SbS aswell. Some of the articles allude to that it offers only Trivoz.

I'm so stoked about gears in 3d as well, it's gonna be awesome on my 3dxl combo. I too saw the comment on trivioz. It looks like the latest sdk supports active glasses as well as anaglyph though. So perhaps we can rest easy:

I thought the Arkham Asylum trivioz 3d was pretty subtle though.

A few articles referred to Alien Mammaries popping out of the screen in gears 3d however. Gears never was a subtle game

This quote from the game's review by Official Xbox magazine sounds encouraging:

"Gears of War 3 is, bar none, the killer app for 3D gaming on Xbox 360. An already gorgeous game chock-full of awe-inducing set-pieces is taken to a higher level through stereoscopic 3D lenses, whether you're seeing rays of sun slicing through clouds, admiring rolling waves through a ship's port window, or standing atop an elevator as it topples towards the ground five stories below. And in a happy coincidence, the game's third-person perspective perfectly complements the 3D, as the bulky COG soldiers are given depth and context within the world of Sera. Run, don't walk, to the
nearest Best Buy ASAP and warm up that credit card. You'll thank us later."

Isn't Arkham City supposed to be using Trivoz (as a method for separating left and right eye images as opposed to proper stereoscopic rendering), but with the options of both side-by-side 3D and the dreadful anaglyph (and perhaps frame sequential on the PS3)?

Played act 1 in 3D. It uses side by side (like all 360 3D games) and it is awful, terrible, unacceptable, use your own negative adjective du jour.

The depth of field and before/beyond window effects are only average. There is a noticeable loss of texture detail, more pronounced aliasing, and screen tearing. But the worst, absolutely worst part: INPUT LAG.

It is most noticeable at the beginning while Marcus is walking around the Raven's Nest looking for Dom; pan the camera around to see. But wait, there's more! Try active reloading any weapon, there is tangible lag between pressing RB and the hash stopping where it needs to. I would go so far to say that Gears 3 is near unplayable in dimension 3 and I have no confidence that things will be better for Halo CE Anniversary.

No biggie, it just gives me an excuse to turn off the D7000 and turn on the light cannon and play via a 92" screen in 1080p.

Arkham Asylum: GOTY Edition used TriOviz anaglyph 3D, so I bet Arkham City uses the reprojection technique in SBS mode too.

Well I wouldn't believe that guy about the review of gears in 3d goto GameSpot and goto the forums got the search field and type 3d. Every single person which was about 10 people say that's its the best 3d experience they seen yet even better than avatar. They say not only does it have great depth but a lot of POP out and framers don't take much of a hit. I'm going to play now but from what o heard its the best 3d console experience yet , awesome news
post #22 of 85
If it's laggy and the depth is really lacking, makes me wonder if it really is doing some kind of post process instead of rendering eyes separately.

3D is absolutely incredible. Depth is nothing short of of face melting when you follow in third person. Viewing on Optoma HD3300 with RF glasses with 100" screen. No more or less "lag" than 2D. I would suggest viewing at retailer to judge if possible. You wont be sorry.

Hello all I just finished my hometheater mounted my jvc rs 50 and hooked my xbox and was getting ready to enjoy gears of war 3 in 3D glory...but I can't get it to work when I enable 3D it does side by side but it looks like a split screen is there something I'm doing wrong....pls help
post #25 of 85
i agree, playing GOW3 in 3d on my sammie 46c8000 was incredible. the depth really brings out more in the game. i didn't notice lag when reloading or moving the character at all

for whoever didn't like the 3d, did you go into the 3d setup as well as the regular video setup and tweak with your 3d glasses on ?
I have to agree with the guys that are saying that looks good. I played yesterday for 2 hours and I have to say that is the second best 3D game. I like Crysis more dough.

U should go to the RS 50 menu , HDMI part ! And there have a 3D option , choose side by side and u will Rock !

I thought this was difficult to play in 3D with the running and the screen jumping makes it hard. I'm only on a 55" though maybe its better on a larger screen.

Unimpressed with the 3D built into Gears 3, honestly the 2D to 3D conversion in my tv does a better job. I can't imagine anyone being impressed with this unless maybe they have not viewed any of the well done 3D games.
