Executive Decision Blu-ray (Best Buy Exclusive)

Didn't even know this title was already out until I saw blu-ray.com's review. Really like this movie no matter how many times I've seen it. Does anyone have the Blu-ray? What are your impressions? Screengrabs in the review certainly look good.

I have this on laser disc and am curious myself.
I was interested until I read about all of the cuts.

+1, I'm not big into censorship.

Damn political correctness, I didn't even read that. Went straight to the video & audio quality sections. Hmm, may still get the disc. It's the action/suspense plot itself that matters, but it does suck they felt they had to make silly edits.

What?? What did they change???

Some people over on Blu-Ray.com noticed these changes:

Also seconds later the shot of him slightly opening the book/bible and rifling his fingers through it is gone.

Approximately 1:37:04 to 1:37:11.

It cuts from B.D. Wong's character saying "He's blocked by the seats, there's passengers all around him." to the exterior shot of the F-14s arriving.

1:37:18 to 1:37:31

Oh, I forgot to mention that all these times are from the original DVD, they may not match up with the Blu-ray.

+1 here. PC stuff can go away.

Oh FFS.

So now the bad guys have had their sole motivation (Islam) for being "bad guys" removed? Stupid euro-censorship.

Retroactively censoring art should be illegal.

Thanks sixfootse7en. Some of the cuts/edits listed (like at Approximately 1:37:04 to 1:37:11) seem fairly significant. I don't get these cuts. There have been recent movies like 'Traitor', 'Body of Lies', etc. where it's clear the terrorists are Muslim fanatics. Makes no sense to have it appear like 'Executive Decision' bad guys are non-Muslim (generic), yet obviously Muslim (appearance, spoken language, etc.) fanatics. Also seems like the bad guys shouting "allahu-akbar" is still there.
Still going to pick this up. If you really like the movie and can live with the minor cuts, it's a no-brainer. The dvd is frickin' ancient.
People said these cuts have been on the German DVD since it came out. Seems like Warner was lazy and just used the censored master for the worldwide edition of the movie.
Ha! I wouldn't doubt that in the slightest.

Ohhh, Warner.

This would defintely explain why these cuts are there, WB is just too lazy to release multiple versions on Blu Ray.

Though I question why Pizza Hut/Taco Bell got 2 masters when that change is insignificant to the story. Clearly it is convenient to WB that these radical Islam cuts were already made to avoid any controversy.

I brought up this idiosyncrasy on another board and everyone thought my reasoning was poor.

like i said on blu-ray.com:

Exactly this edits are on the German DVD from 1999 and other European DVDs.
These Edits are not new.

Here you can see a Report about the Edits with Images:
http://www.schnittberichte.com/schni...php?ID=2965833

It is written in German but i think you get it cause of the Pictures.
The same on Blu Ray now.

In the German Voice Dub even the background of the terrorists (Islam, Allah) are censored.

Example:

Original Audio English:
Nagi: "Allah has chosen us for a task far greater than Jaffa's freedom. We are the true soldiers of Islam. Our destiny is to deliver the vengeance of Allah into the belly of the infidel.
Man: "This has nothing to do with Islam. This is not Allah's will. You're blinded by hatred.

German Voice Dub (back translated by me so it is very rough but i think you will understand what was changed)
Nagi: "We have a much more important task than Jaffa's Freedom. We are the chosen ones for the fight. We will not tolerate from any human that we are being insultet. My revenge will be shocking.
Typ: "What you are saying has nothing to do with our plan. This was not as agreed. You're blinded by hatred."

So in The German Version they don't even speak about Allah or Islam.

I don't know about other foreign dubs.
But with this changes in the dubbing the Edits makes much more sense.

Just picked up the BD from Best Buy. Aside from the cuts/edits, the video & audio are the best I've seen for this film. I also have an old HBO-HD cable TV mpeg2 cap at 17mbps (probably the same master used for the DVD).
I believe that because the DVD release is pretty bad. Early ( late 90's ) DVD's are always horrific!

GAH! I hate those cuts but may end up buying this anyway just for the increase in video and audio quality.

Favorite line from the movie:

[One of the Navy planes tilts so its missiles are visible]
747 Captain: Jesus Christ. What the hell are they doing?
747 First Officer: They're getting ready to light us up.

Yeah, I know how you feel, I'm thinking the same thing. I wouldn't if the DVD weren't so bad.
They probably took that line out because it offends Christians... oh wait, nevermind.
I don't think the above 'favorite line' part was taken out.

That's what it looks like. Better not be the case.

What knife cuts do you think are missing?

When I compared the Blu-ray and DVD, the only changes I saw where the ones involving the Quran and kneeling down to pray.

I watched the whole movie, Blu-ray and DVD side by side.

So let me ask, in your opinion is it worth the upgrade to Blu?

Yes, the picture quality is a a huge improvement over the crappy DVD. As well as the audio.

But because of the edits, the DVD will remain in my collection.
