The "I'll demo my subwoofer for other enthusiasts" thread. - Page 12

MKt without subs? What? !!? Does the absence of subs motivate you to finish the project quicker? smile.gif

I have been putting off someone who wants to check my stuff out (but now that I think about it might have been the sister speaker thread) but have been super busy and no time to host....

Luke, do the G Horns and the Othorns play nice together or does it take some work? If you get them all dialed in that's pretty much the ideal/ultimate setup right? The G Horn is like an Orbit Shifter but plays lower bass louder and the Othorn is like an OS as well - not as low but louder that the OS? Is that right? I'm using the OS as a reference point since I've heard them on multiple occasions including in my room.

A setup that has more authority down low and louder in the same freq as an OS would be unreal and yeah you should have that setup for a very long time.

I've just begun trying to mix the two, and it's tricky. I'm getting there though.

From 30hz on up, I think the Othorn and OS are pretty close. I can't say which is better since only one OS was at the meet.

However, having played just one Ghorn quite a bit then going directly to one OS in my room, by the time you get down to 15-17hz, it's more like a 4-to-1 ratio. Meaning at 15hz I'd wager that one Ghorn has as much or more output than 4 orbit shifters. Sounds insane, but I had them both right there in my room, and we pushed the OS to it's absolute limits. To put it into perspective, one Ghorn had more SPL at 15-25hz than all four of my sealed 5400's powered by a pair of clones...

Holy balls man.... that sounds impressive. cool.gif

I've recently discovered through using the LPF on my minidsp that I really don't care much about bass below 15hz (all it does is rattle my house like crazy but I don't feel much and the couch doesn't shake), while at the same time realizing that there is no such thing as too much bass from 15-25hz, you know that bass that shakes the hell out of the couch, and you, but doesn't have much volume to it. Sounds like that is right in the G Horn's wheelhouse.

I recently watched the new Total Recall and there were a lot of scenes with this type of bass. I'm not sure if the movie was any good or not, I was too busy enjoying the couch shake/body feel of the bass. smile.gif

I feel exactly the same way. And yes, 15-25hz is what the Ghorn was made more.

People gave me a little grief when I said I was going to go from the 4 sealed 5400s to the horns, since the horns don't have much response below 12hz. Well, in my room, from 14hz to 13hz it's a 12-15db cliff, and even though I could push 110db at 10hz, I couldn't hear it nor feel it. If that's the case I really don't care about it.

15-25hz is what makes it fun for me.

I demoed my L/C/R JTR 228HT and dual Captivator Pro subwoofer setup for forum 7channelfreak today who hails from Texas, based on this thread/forum. He is stopping by carps next to compare the 212HT and see which L/C/R he will choose to buy based on these two demos. He purchased a JTR Captivator S2 as the subwoofer for his next setup. He asked me if I had plans to change anything soon I said no. I'm as pleased as can be with the JTR purchases. My Captivator subs still make me laugh out loud at their ridiculous output two years into ownership, and the 228HT are a fantastic match for dynamic and clean sounding speakers! Movie clip watching is nothing short of Incredible!

The Captivator ported subs move tons of air! I love feeling the 'wind' from the ported subs to match the onscreen action.

You guys rock to keep providing updates in this thread, and offer to share you home / theater!

I've had a half dozen demos, at least, at my home from this thread and each has been a lot of fun! I hope others are getting some traction from this and using it when you go on vacations and such!!! I just reached out to a couple guys on the east coast through PM to see if I can visit their theaters during the trip!
Keep it going fellows!

Found that out for myself recently too. Thought I wanted flat response to single digits, but couldn't take all of the rattling that came with it. So now I've found a happy medium, where I can feel the floor ripple, couch move, but doesn't shake everything like an actual earthquake.

I would also like to offer to demo my system. Located in San Diego, CA.
