New Optoma HD33 HD3300 1080p 3D Projector Review - Page 2

How bad would this look with keystone adjustment? I would like to try a DLP like this one, but my ht setup is in the basement and the ceiling is low. I currently have a ceiling mounted Sanyo Z3 and plan on upgrading to a 1080p pj, maybe with 3D. If this projector had lens shift I would probably try one.

Although I am against using digital keystone adjustments, the HD33 will have ± 5° Vertical adjust, assuming your projector didn't have to be tilted more than that, it would look decent in all but PC desktop applications in my opinion. I have heard forums members say that they cannot tell in movies or sports that it is on, a few say they can see it.

So this will not take a 1920x1080 120hz signal via VGA port (or any other way)? Would be nice to run 3d games from the computer as well as the ps3. My HD70 is still hanging on with the original bulb after 4 years and 3500hrs, so when that finally goes this will likely be the replacement. I can make do with 720p 4xAA in 3d (currently doing that with the HD70 at 30hz/eye anyway) but would prefer 1080p from the computer. Can't wait to see some reviews, but knowing how much I've enjoyed the HD70 this seems like the perfect replacement.

Optoma finally posted the manual online. Seems there is a setting within it (page 28) called "PureMotion" which looks to be some sort of frame-interpolation feature, like taking a 60Hz input and displaying at 120Hz. It supports the mandatory HDMI 1.4a specs and I also took a snippet from it for the supported 3D inputs chart within it:

I hope the reviewer gives a good comparison to the HD33 against the current crop of 3D ready projectors in actual 3D mode (brightness, contrast ratios and percieved resolution). Is the 1800 lumen spec in 2D or 3D mode? 1800 lumens may be a little dim for 3D in some installations when adding for losses with the current line-up of glasses, etc..

The current crop of native 3D 1080p projectors are up in the next sub-forum, CEDIA may or may not change that soon though. The initial lumens output rating is for both modes, that doesn't change until individual calibrations and real-world measurements are done by the particular user for each mode. The final fL's from the screen will also change depending on screen size, gain, and throw, while further modified by the glasses. Room light-control is now more important than ever in my opinion for users who utilize 3D.

I have noticed that the HD33 uses the DarkChip2 while the HD8300 as well as the Sharp XV-Z17000 uses the DarkChip3. So should we expect that the contrast and black level of the HD33 will be similar to the HD20, which also used the DarkChip2?

They cost 2-3x as much too. I have the HD20 now and will be getting this soon but in my situation,

Affordable 3D 1080p > Slightly increased black-levels from the DC3

I am sure Optoma's target customers for the HD33 think similarly, other's opinions may differ though.

this looks exciting with the built in RF and 3 pin vesa port for 'bring your own IR emitter'.

I wonder if the RF is based on the Bit Cauldron glasses

same as my Monster Vision 3D glasses. I already have a pair if this is the case. otherwise, it wouldn't matter since it has the 3 pin, I could just hook up the emitter and it should work.

it's a bummer about the offset, these are difficult to use with High Power screens. I don't like using keystone but used to do with with my Acer 5360 so I can get max gain by putting the projector dead center on the screen, 6" above eye level.

This projectors big brother is going to have be price similar to the JVC RS40, Sony HW30 and Panasonic 7000 to compete in the 3-3.5k price range.

I have one of these -was sold as a key for nvidas when used with early drivers(seen as the usb emitter by nvidia) and a pair of bullit proof glasses(dlp1) on amazon.

Makes sense. I cannot believe that the DC3 should be that much more. Maybe next year it'll come down.

Only problem with me is I am used to DC3 in my Mits HC4000 and Acer H5360.

How do you guys know it is a 6x speed color wheel, I do not see any mention of the color wheel speed, only that it has a 6-segment color wheel.

I doubt it would be bright enough with a 6x speed color wheel, I bet it's 4x and 6 segment.

I am curious about it as well, but with an RGBRGB wheel, it wouldn't be too hard to achieve a 6X speed at 60Hz. All they would have to do is increase the wheel RPM's from 7,200 to 10,800 (10,800rpm/3,600fpm=3X speed...two sets of RGB's make it a 6X speed) ....the two RGB primaries refreshing color every revolution makes it easy and not too drastic of lumens loss, if anything the real culprit could be the noise and bearing life in that case as it has been in the past with some manufacturers.

Unless Guitarman made a typo, I am assuming that came from his contact with Optoma.

So it's looking as if this unit will not work with Nvidia 3D vision for 1080p gaming (only sending 720p will work)... bummer!
