We will not be able to compare. We are not going to be stocking the HD33, but what you stated above along with the black case is all anybody could tell the difference between the two. You would have to use measuring equipment to tell the lumen and contrast difference. To me the biggest difference is the warranty. Since the HD33 is not going to be discounted very much the price difference is not as big as it seems. Place an extended warranty on the HD33 and the lamp and you might be surprised at the result.

I am replacing my 7 year old Runco VX-1000C 720p projector that has finaly bit the dust. My HT room is approx 21x16, seating position is 15ft, ceiling mounted, with a 110" Vutec GreyDove fixed screen. Lighting is somewhat controlled, although there is some natural light during the day, in most cases the HT room is used at night time in almost complete darkness. My primary use will be HT, some sports, and games. 60/20/20% use. I have invested in a high end audio system, although video is advancing so quickly I don't see a reason to spend the extra $'s and would rather purchase a new projector every 3yrs or so.

I'm looking at the Optoma HD3300 or HD8300. I have read the review on the HD33 and it looks good over all. The 3D capability really intrigues me, although I don't want to jump in too soon if the picture quality will be substantially better for a 2D only projector in the same price range.

Here are my basics:

- Budget $2k or under.
- Would like to have 3D capability
- Light controlled room with 110" Grey Dove screen
- Was seeking substantially picture quality/brightness from the Runco 720p, I'm sure most current models will out perform in this dept, since this was a 7-8 yr old projector.

for 1100$ you can buy mistibishi HC4000 that have better IQ than HD33 in 2D. for 2000$ you can have much better IQ than HD33 in 2D.
i think you need decide if you really go use 3D many times...if yes, the HD33 is the choice.
if you will use 90% of 2D content for me dont make any sense think in optoma HD33 because as i say you can get better for much less and much better for same price .

How about $1100 for HC4000 for a great 2D + $900 for HD66/3DXL for great 3D ? oh wait, HD66 doesnt do 1080....so my question to experts is: has anyone come across 3D 720 vs 1080 comparison so far ?

1080p 3d to me is a significant step up. As good as 720p 3d looks, 1080p 3d looks almost too good to be true. The perceived resolution of 720p 3d looks closer to 1080p. The perceived resolution of 1080p 3d looks like nothing I have ever seen before. It looks almost scary real.

Keep in mind though, that my 1080p 3d viewing was on an RS40 and my 720p 3d viewing was on an Acer. I personally felt that resolution was the most noticeable difference between the two. Other than that, the experience was closer than you would think.

At three times the price, I can't understand why the HD33 is so much brighter (1800 vs 1300). If you need the extra lumens for satisfactory 3D performance, I wonder how the HD83 will stack up against the HD33 in terms of 3D.

I received my HD33 today from Projector SuperStore, but the box was crushed and the side panel flap was not taped shut allowing components to fall out. The projector itself does not look damaged and I am going to go ahead and test it tonight. I am very disappointed with the packaging job.

According to projectorcentral, thats similar to my HD66 which i dont like in 2D at all owing to 720 and also was not happy with 2D quality.

Are there any awesome 1080p 2D at this price range ?

OK... I need screenshots people (2D and 3d both, please!)! I've been refreshing this thread all day and have almost pulled the trigger buying the darn thing and just rolling the dice, hoping that I'll be pleased. I mean come on, it's my first "real" projector so I have nothing to compare it to, right?

One thing that did cross my mind today was about updating the firmware. Is that a simple user upgradeable feature on the HD33? If not, I'd hate to buy the first batch... yikes!

And to nemomtt, that picture sucks. Even if the projector is fine (which I have my doubts), I'd still be worried all the time that it lost years off the backend (read: out of warranty) part of it's life.

Anyway, I need screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeenshots! :-)

Are these boxes supposed to be shipped naked like this without an outer box ?

Its interesting they dont tout the other advanced features like PureColor and PureMotion to impress a buyer

well depend on what you call awesome. if will be your 1st projector and you dont have a good tv (to compare IQ) i think anything will be awesome but obvious for 500$ cant expect much.

If the machines innards are identical, wouldn't it be possible to flash the HD33 with the HD3300 firmware to enable the extra picture tuning features?

What components fell out? I don't think there's anything up there. Mine did have the two pairs of glasses placed there. Looks like a ups ship job, mine was delivered Fed Ex perfectly. Looks like the driver used it as a step up to get another package off the upper rack.

could you dial in guitarman's settings and take a few screen shots for the rest of us who are dying to know the difference between HD33 and HD3300 ?

A large retailer should know better, but I've gotten a few in the case that made it ok. That said, I would call and demand a return pickup with a new one to replace it or ask for money back. This could damage a lot of things plus shorten the life of the bulb. Usually, you'll hear people complain about loud fan or color wheel noise from a shaken package such as this. Too expensive to take that chance.

I still have a lot of fine tuning to do, but I have it up and running and my first impressions are very positive. I thought I would share some photos. The first photo is of three undocumented screw mounts on bottom of the unit under the lens that I believe were intended for some type of anamorphic lens or filter. The second shot is of the projector is with my custom mount installed. The third shot shows my DIY anamorphic lens in the raised position. The last two shots are screen shots

I bought mine as part of a special promotion that included a pair glasses that I did not receive. I am also missing the RF transmitter that might have been packed in there.
