New Optoma HD33 HD3300 1080p 3D Projector Review - Page 25

I ordered the Hd33 from Amazon and it shipped today for a Monday delivery. Cant wait. Got a question from those who own the projector. Is it possible to use both DLP Link and RF Glasses at the same time? The reason I ask is that I have two (2) pairs of Optima BG-ZD101 glasses and would like to order more glasses. I would like to get the new RF Optima glasses and use them both depending on how many friends I have over.

I had the same ideal, but unfortunately you have to select one or the other in the projector's menu.

Think I'm going to have to pick up this projector. Just don't know how I'm going to tell the wife I need to replace the reciver just so I can watch 3d.

Well, you could do what I did if your receiver has HDMI that doesn't support 3D. Just pick up a DVDO Edge Video Scaler. It has two (2) HDMI Output ports (one dedicated to audio). That way you can improve your picture and keep your receiver at the same time. I love mine. It's possibly the best investment I have made to my home theater. Well, until the HD33 arrives, at least.

I have been tweaking my projector's settings and I have taken some new photos. I was unable to remove all of the shake from the camera and this affected the image sharpness. This is not the fault of the projector, it is very sharp.

Oh, well. I figured as much. Now I have to decide if I'm going to keep the DLP Link glasses or return them to Amazon in favor of the RF ones. I have until the 10th to decide as my return window closes on that day. What do you guys think? Return them for the RF ones or just keep what I have.

No you can not use dlp link and rf, I wanted to know the same so I called optoma and confirmed you can not use them both at the same time, kind of a bummer

Watched a bunch of 3d movies, at least some favorite clips. The 3d on this pj is jawdropping. If you don't have a smile on your face when watching 3d on this pj then you have no pulse.

I've been experimenting with different settings for 3d. I like having frame interpolation on low. I keep the pure color off because colors get overly saturated. I have found that I really like graphic gamma. Things just pop more. The only side affect I've found is that very bright scenes look a bit washed out but everything else looks better. I keep pure detail off. Cannot actually see what it does.

One suggestion for those new to 3d pj's; sit closer than you do with 2d. The 3d is more immerse. Try different seating distances.

By the way i'm using ir glasses and an ir emitter from ultimate 3d heaven and they work perfectly.

J&R, but, they're out of stock (get someone to match). No one has these for lower $ (includes emitter.)

What about brightness, that was the sticky point for me.

'Lot of talk here about glasses. I've tried quite a few of them - IR and DLP Link - name brand and generic. I don't like any of them due to the weight. Gonna try the Optoma RF ones.

You cant use them both at the same time because DLP-link uses a white-sync-frame that doesn't get filtered out by RF glasses

Before HD33 showed up, I read all the forums on how to pick the best budget 3D projector and I narrowed it down to HD66 and the Acer one. Everyone seemed to say that they prefer to have a dual projector setup...one for best 2D and one for great 3D...because budget 3D PJ's sucked in 2D. I almost convinced myself to go this route and was not looking for a 2D PJ but a great 3D PJ.

Enters HD33..... and I am completely blown away by the 2D quality....everybit as good as my highly rated 55" Samsung LCD...but bigger, better and now I plan to dust off all my 2D collection and watch them on this PJ (got to try the 2D->3D as well ) ! It feels like its almost a sin to watch 1080p on anything smaller than 100"

May be because I am not "spoiled" by need for perfect blacks, I find this PJ giving much better blacks and contrast compared to HD66. Its 3 times bigger and 3 times heavier, so it got to have 3 times better performance

Well, I got to watch TinkerBell with my kid yesternight and the 2D is breathtaking...many scenes almost looked 3D owing to the sharpness and out of the world color......For me this is a keeper. Still waiting for glasses and cant wait to see what 3D has to offer.

I was confused when i finally got to see guitarman's settings as I am not sure which ones to use for HDMI....I didnt see color or tint either....could someone please share their optimized settings ?

Also I dont have the luxury to ceiling mount this, so wondering whats the best way to set it up....any ideas ?

You can place it on a coffee table. Depending on how low the screen is, you may be able to get a table with a shelf below and hide the projector below the table too.

Calculate the offset accurately and get a table within 2 inches of the required height.

BTW, can you tell me what i the height of the lense (i.e. center of the lense) from the table if you place the projector on a table ? I think it should be around 3.5". Want to make sure.

Yeah, the hide-it-under-a-table technique is best, but you need plenty of ventilation, and the screen will have to be close to the floor. Any other location between the floor and the ceiling will cause you to keystone.

I played with an HD66 for a few weeks and was amazed at how good it looked compared to many higher end units I've seen. If the 33 is even better then that must be amazing.

Thanks both for your suggestions...are there any tripods that I could use to mimic ceiling mount ? If i use the table, it gets too close to screen and I wont get the 120" image. Hoping to use a tripod behind the couch to maximize the distance to screen.

You ain't seen nothin....wait till you see HD33...you will throw HD66 out in the trash (if you cant return it)

Great to hear that. I had returned it after a few weeks knowing that all of these options were coming out soon and I'm glad I did. I'm only waiting to hear about the Mitsubishi 7800 before I get one of these. Even then, it would probably be hard to justify paying more when the HD33 would probably be 90% of the performance.

Yeah, get yourself a ladder and set the projector on a pillow upside down on top of it--;o). I actually saw that done here on the board a couple of years ago.

Try a two by two piece of oak--maybe floor to ceiling and secure with a wood base plate top and bottom. Then add a protruding shelf that can handle a ceiling mount--you'll need to mount the projector upside down. The closer to the ceiling the better to avoid keystoning. Or if you just go from floor, then add bracing and slide it under a sofa to hide it. Here's some suggestions. Simple ideas--you probably already are thinking this way. You can stain/paint the pole to match walls etc. You can also use a chair railing. The ones round with a flat side--to attach the shelf. Of course, cables, etc. would have to run along the pole. To hide them you could build a box pole (four pieces of wood attached together with a channel through the middle for wires)--or maybe a hollow aluminum pole attached to a wood base, etc..

To my eyes it looks brighter in 3d than my Acer. However that could be because i'm running it in the 3d preset with graphic gamma.

How in the world does everyone take such good pics of there set?!

Don't know what others do - I use a tripod & delay timer. That reduces any kind of shaking to a minimum.

A decent camera with flexible iso settings is the key. Using a a tripod helps a bunch too.
