ok sorry, I'm new here. I know pretty much nothing about audio setups, only the basics.
Ok so basically before he left for good, my father gave me two speakers & a PA system amp (Olympus). I plugged in one speaker (they both have black wire out) to the 8 *insert horseshoe* slot and one into the COM port. For one is that right? There was no sound coming from the system. Sound comes from the TV's R/W to the amp's phono port. Can someone help me set this ****er up? Thanks

If you had a model number or a picture of the connections on the amp, that would help. I could not info on an Olympus PA amp.

The input that would be correct for a TV audio patch would be labeled as CD, AUX, TAPE or something similar. The phono connection is ONLY for the unamplified connection to a turntable.

Is the amp powered on for certain? Pilot light on? is the fuse OK? All you should need to do is turn up the CD /AUX control and the master volume. Try connecting a set of headphones. If the phones work , then likely the speaker connection is not complete or the speaker is shot.

The amp is fine and powers up correctly, I think its the speaker connection. There's no model number though idek what brand but there's a black speaker wire.

You did the speakers right. Now use the AUX/CD input, not phono. There is a switch in the back that selects that input. Make sure it is in that setting. If you still don't get sound, the next step is testing the speaker. As long as your speaker wires are not shorted to each other, you should get sound no matter which way you hooked it up.

I never really paid too much attention to it. Ok ,so I have 2 8 ohm speakers. I have tv out to aux in. I connected 1 speaker to 8 and 1 to com and got a buzz. Where do these speakers go? each speaker has one black wire that splits in two at the end. I've fiddled with the mix.

The post about getting no sound if the speaker is an 8 ohm and you connect to the 4 ohm tap is incorrect. You will get sound if everything is turned on and connected properly. The 4/8 selection provides the BEST match for the same impedance speaker but it is not exclusive.

This is what I'm working with. What goes where? Is there any cable that can allow me to put the speaker cables to AUX? Thanks.

What does that mean, speaker cables to AUX?

The speaker lines go to the terminals marked C or COMMON and 8. The CD player goes to the jacks marked CD/AUX. That simple. If you are using only one speaker it does not really matter wire wire goes to which terminal.

BTW, that amp is an MPA40 by Radio Shack. Just enter MPA-40 in the search engine and the operators manual will pop up as a PDF.

I've used that amp before.

It is a simple mono set-up.

Your speakers (I see you have an owners manual linked, the wrong one...but the basics are the same) connect in a combination of single speaker or multiples, including 70V(which we won't get into)

The speakers simply connect (if using 1) to COM and 8ohm.

If using two in a series connection, you connect COM and 16ohm.

If you reverse the speakers to parallel, you connect COM and 4ohm.

Those twin leads are a + and a -. When connecting two, you may have to play with Phase, but you can figure that out once you get sound.

Edit:

Just noticed Gizmo may be inaccurate in saying that is the 40. I can't see the pic very well, but I think it says 50...if so, you did link the correct manual.

It's the MPA-50.

So I plugged it into another amp (Aiwa cx-na555) and the speakers both work just fine. The sound is a little flat but that was expected. The audio cables between the tv and the amp were bad, so I replaced them. Everything is working with the aiwa, but when I tried switching my working set over to the optimus all I got was the buzzing sound.
