Samsung Aspect Ratio

I have a Samsung PN63C8000 plasma. I am having a weird problem when trying to view widescreen, non-anamorphic DVDs in either my Samsung BD-C5900 or my PS3. When fiddling with the Aspect Ratio from 16:9, Wide, 4:3, Fit, etc... No matter what, I can not get the right aspect for the movie I am watching. Both devices are connected to HDMI. Some movies, for example:

The Abyss
Star Trek Generations

If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Seems like either your Blu ray player, DVD player, or PVR is not set at 16x9 aspect ratio within the settings menu.

Not sure what you mean. Many movies are shot wider than 16:9, and thus have black bars on the top and bottom (it's normal). Is that what you mean?

With a non-anamorphic DVD, you will have black bars on all 4 sides of the image, this is also known as "window-boxing", as opposed to "letter-boxing", which will have bars on only the top and bottom.
The only solution I know of is to zoom the image in.
What happens is that the DVD is a 4:3 image, with a widescreen movie letter-boxed in side it. Hence the bars on both sides and top/bottom.
