It seems you would be best off placing the 3009 on Audiogon and using the proceeds to get a Denon AVR-4311 or whatever strikes your fancy.
My experience with Onkyo's CS was actually excellent. Calling the 800 Number is an exercise in futility, but calling the 201 Number and talking to the folks at Onkyo USA is a different story. At least it was for me.
I do not disagree that the x07 Series had a depressingly high number of HDMI Board issues. I do think HDMI issues got better with the x08, but then there was the damned Serial (IDE) Cable issue. However, if you read the 3008/5008 Owners Thread, the Thread on the whole is quite positive.
I have the 5009 receiver..not the 3009
I am really not a Denon fan...I had a 4310 for about 30 days and was sorely unimpressed and sold it
It clipped and shut down in my home testing with some 4ohm speakers
They would have to have really stepped up their game..amp section wise..to get me in the upper mid tier Denon camp again
I got a very good deal on a Pioneer SC37 a few weeks ago...a dealer demo unit. I sold the SC07 and that paid 80% of the cost for the SC37
The Sc37 does indeed sound better..less bright..than the SC07
So..frankly the 5009 doesn't have a place...I have a Yamaha Z7 that I was thinking about selling
But ...not sure..my experience with Yamaha..both reliability and customer service wise has been a on another level than Onkyo
I to called the 201 number...same result..in fact I had to deal with customer relations specifically...who only work till 5pm
I could never get through
I finally got a hold of the manager and dealt with her directly with the buyback 905/replacement 5009 and well as the cable replacement issue on my 5508 preamp
I again say...don't speak too quickly about reliability on the xx08 series...I am speaking receivers..not preamps
They have not been out there long enough..as you may/maynot recall...way back in the x05,x06 days...the first year was generally good. It was the second year..and for some folks right after the 2 year warranty expired...that their HDMI board went south
Also..don't forget that is a $800-900 (MSRP) repair
So..many, as you have read I am sure, have "bricked" units on their hand
I just saw in the 1007 forum where the guy says his unit loses sound after it gets hot...I had that same issue with an 807...they even replaced the HDMI board
Same problem when I got it home. They gave me my money back. I put the proceeds towards a Yamaha A3000
