I think there are some displays in Asia that can work with this

I would expect this to be years before this is is available mainstream in NA

Look at how blu ray DVD recorders have been available in other parts of the world

The 5009 Receiver( to replace the 905) arrived today

The box looked a little used..upon opening the box I could see a piece of the Styrofoam was snapped in half...but the receiver looks fine

I like the new look...I was a little surprised they didn't use the shiny finish on the faceplate

But all in all a nice looking piece

How do you like the 5009?
I had the 5007 and it was a nightmare.
It was in the shop four times for almost four months and the shop did not know what the heck they were doing. Finally after contacting Onkyo complaining about there product failures they sent me a brand new 5009 two weeks ago and I love it. It seems that they got this one right, I am a happy camper so far. ENJOY!!!

Well darn, was hoping Onkyo's top end model would at least have the same number of channels as the previous year's Denon's high end model. Oh well, time to wait and see what all the other makers do. I need 11.1 at least...

Then the Denon 4311 is your best option. There won't be a 4312 this year. It is a real bummer that I bought 11 speakers expecting my Onkyo 5008 to be able to switch between them like listed in the manual.

I pulled it out of the box to check for shipping damage and then put it back in the box

I could replace the Yamaha Z7 with it...but Yamaha dependability and customer service has been so much better , than Onkyo, ..I question if that is a good idea

omd28: What was the problem with your 5007? My 3007 has been in the shop for three months, waiting for parts. I had significant static in the right surround channel and subwoofer channels. It was my second unit. The first had the same problems in other channels. My service guy says dealing with Onkyo sucks. He's an authorized repair center. Whom did you call at Onkyo to complain?

Anybody else know how to deal with repair delays? I'm convinced repair guy is doing all he can.

The 3007 is my fifth or sixth Onkyo AV receiver. The best one by far was my 805, but it didn't have enough HDMI inputs.

The real reason to get these high end amps

The Denon 4311ci also has AirPlay. Nobody mentioned that even the x009 Onkyo's lack AirPlay. And yes the Denon has 11.2 though I don't need that.

The Denon is also lighter weight. I may need to bring it on a plane and even without the box the Onkyos weigh 55 pounds. I can't think of an easy way to strip 10# out of the Onkyo.

People seem to feel Denon is more reliable. At least, people aren't putting up much of an argument here in this Onkyo thread. Denon was bought by a private equity firm in 2008 and normally that is bad news for quality. http://www.audioholics.com/news/indu...cs-mitt-romney I am not sure of any easy way to know about quality. If I haul one out to Asia it would be a problem if it broke.

Maybe the 4311 is a known quantity in terms of reliablity, compared to new unproven models from Onkyo, though really these AVRs are not all that different year to year. I guess really these forums are the best place for me to scan for reliability problems. In fact, by the same token, the 3008 is a proven model about as old as the 4311 so I could look at that. All these have Audyssey XT-32 and that is my main motivation.

I put it back in the box and it is still sitting in my garage.

Onkyo is not held in my highest regard right now...so I wondering if I even want to put up with the possible outcomes that have transpired before for me

I actually read this whole thread while researching your question. This is what I found. Onkyo is a scary brand to buy right now. WOW! I found a difference or discrempancy between the 5008 and the 5009. I believe they removed the "BTL" or amp bridging function. Looking at the manual, data sheet, and most importantly the back of the receiver, there is no btl feature on the 5009. Can someone 100% verify this? Passive bi-amping is available on these and even super cheap receivers. It is an almost worthless feature. Active bi-amping is useful but we don't have active bi-amping going on here. Now bridging a 2 channel amp to 1 channel mono does add real power gains to most amps. Denon doesn't offer btl amp bridging and most others don't either.

To bi-amp the 5008 connect tweeter to surround back, but on the 5009 to bi-amp connect the tweeter to the front high (manual page 16). The other confusion about "bi-amping" is there are 2 types. Splitting signals above and below "bass" crossover (around 80 hz) is something almost everyone does theses days. Splitting the signal between the tweeter (highs) and woofers (midrange) and amping those signals seperately to a single speaker with 1 internal crossover is the "bi-amping" that is assumed to be the connection that is not very worthwhile. Best solution for more power to the main speakers is external 2 channel (or more) amps.

The TX-NR5009 has just received the highest rating: "Masterpiece" for an AVR in that magazin: www.areadvd.de. It's in German, naturally, but use auto-translation to read it in English. A lot of fotos inside / outside plus the complete menus are included.

Thank you for pointing out this review. It looks like the only bi-amp possibility is connecting to the front high which I intend to use. I guess its bad luck, this means no bi-amping for me, which -as some point out- should not give me much anyway.

which I will take with a HUGE grain of salt. The 3008 and 5008 were a good step up from the x007 line due to XT32.

anyone who is considering an Onkyo right now is nuts... Their track record on reliability has been horrible since the x05 series a few years ago... They have HDMI board issues and now the "gunk" on the circuit boards. Replacing a faulty HDMI board will set you back about $1000 right now. For ONE small circuit board.

I now am experiencing the DTS HD Master bomb again on my 905/906 and Onkyo refuses to believe there is a problem. Their U.S. customer service do not communicate to each other and they have absolutely no idea what the heck is going on. And worse, they treated me like I was the problem...

Essentially with the xxx9 reliability might just be what they get right this time around. From reports of other 09 receivers the heat issue is much better. Heat inevitably will lead to other problems. Hopefully through all the prior board failures they nailed down the source. At least that's what the optimist in me is thinking.

I have a few DTS CD's that I would like to rip and play through DLNA. First I tried through my Samsung BD-C6900 (DTS embedded in WAV) but it nicelly tells me format not supported. Feeding the NR5009 unrecognized stuff through DLNA seems to lock up DLNA on the reciever requiring a cold boot.

Does anyone know what codecs and container combinations are supported?
I tried playing DTS in WAV file from Windows 7 (media player).

I owned several units from the beginning of the "new" Onkyo aera: 905 (sold), 875 (sold), 876, 5007 and now 5009 plus 3009. Being cautious right from the beginning, all my units had or still have forced cooling and some even a special heat sink mounted directly onto the Reon chip. None of the units gave me any problem ...
I might have been lucky but being cautious always helps. I still enjoy them.

I can't comment on this, because my units are still boxed in and I don't have the time yet to get them set up.
But because it is the only "serious" review i found on the internet i thought it would be woth mentioning as a first impression from someone.

All I see in that comparison are a bunch of adjectives that have no real hard qualifiers behind them. The 3008/5008 were pretty good sonically. I just have a hard time believing the new 5009 is that much better. I guess I would be more interested in seeing if the amp section in the 5009 is redesigned compared to the 3008/5008. We all know the 1008 and probably the 1009 amp sections were gutted compared to the 1007 of a couple years ago. The 1008/1009 are only THX Select2Plus certified compared to the THX Ultra2Plus of the 5009/5008/3009/3008 models.

Again I want to see some hard qualifiers other than some open to interpretation adjectives.

Realizing the amount of heat the 905/906 were generating, I also had forced cooling and heatsinks mounted on the HQV processors. Used a 120mm PC fan mounted over the HDMI board sucking air out of the case and the heat sinks were a necessity as the HDMI signal would go wonky without them. I had the 906 sent in for service and I still had HDMI issues on its return.

I have a 5009 arriving Monday. Have had 905, 906, 876 and knock on wood all without problems. This is going to pair up to my 70 inch Elite due to be arriving not to long from now !!!

I would say you were lucky for two reasons

1. You never had a failure
2. You never never then had to deal Onkyo customer service

I have had several of the same units units you have had...sans the 876,5007,3009...but add the 885 and 5508 preamps

of the 6 units I have owned in the last 5 years( 807,875(2),885,905,5508)...5 have had issues
..of those 5 ..two units have been replaced, most recently with Onkyo giving me a new 5009 for a failed 905

you're lucky... Onkyo won't even talk to me right now... They don't believe i am having problems with the Star Wars blu-ray discs with the DTS HD Master bomb issue...

I just ordered a 3009, it should come in sometime next week. I guess I've been lucky with my Onkyo experience, apart from the display going out, which was an easy fix, I've had no such trouble with my receiver. Maybe it's because I don't confine my receiver in a tight spots and actually give it room to breathe.

Just thumbing through the manual, it appears they have dropped neural processing for the 5009/3009, not a deal breaker by any means but disappointing that they dropped a feature.

I have both now sitting in my unfinished new house, still in the box.
Haven't had the time to even open the boxes. Will see, if i can get some spare time for this the coming days.

The first thing I usually do, is open the case and look for internal build quality and weaks spots, i have to cope with one way or the other.

I am really looking forward to your review. I sold my 905 a few months ago (decided to remodel some of the theater and add height/wide channels in place of rear surround) and have been trying not to jump the gun on a new receiver. I've found a couple pretty fair deals on a pre owned 5008 and 4311ci. I am upgrading my projector at the same time so I don't want to drop all the coin on the 5009. I can't wait to hear what you have to say about the 3009. If it's a huge step forward (which I can't imagine), I'll go that route, otherwise it's between the 4311ci and 5008.
