(Canada) OTA 1080i vs Bell TV satellite 720p screencaps

I posted these to a Canadian forum but there was no interest. Thought some Canadian AVSers might like to see how a local 1080i compares to the 720p version available on Bell.

The Global ATSC signal is currently lowered to around 14Mbps due to a hidden subchannel simulcasting in SD. The Bell shots were resized from 1280x720 to match.

(I took shots from two adjacent frames on Bell because the stars flicker in and out of existence on their 720p signal)

CTV Calgary this time. No colour difference here.

I'm disappointed with the Bell TV quality on this channel. Before the OTA transmitter converted here I thought it was a problem with their source material. There are 4 HD channels on this transponder; perhaps that contributes to the degradation.

It most certainly does. I used to have Expresss Vu before it was renamed Bell TV, and I have tapes of the first CBC HD broadcast. When they started to reformat everything to 720p the HD image quality dropped dramatically.

Bell has added six MPEG-4 AVC channels running at just 4Mbps for 720p. Decided to see how The Daily Show compares on CTV Calgary vs CTV Halifax.
