Seating distance for my CIH setup

Guys I'm planning to buy a Mits HC 4000 to do a CIH setup. I just want to run by the calculations and seating distance before I commit.

I'm currently doing a 110" screen with 54" height and 96" width in a 16x9 setup. If I want to retain the same image height of 54" for my CIH, my width would have to be 126". Which means that my diagonal would be around 137"? I am very particular that I want to retain the 16x9 size as I have a ton of 1.78 content (tv shows)!

My projector will be ceiling mounted about 13.5 ft from the screen, and the seating is right under the projector. Will the image width be too much for this seating distance? Will the image be bright enough? What do you all think?

P.S. I'll only be using the zoom method and no lenses. I watch mainly at night and the room will be completely dark.

It appears that you will be unable to use the zoom method with a screen this size from that mounted distance. The image width of a 54" CIH 2.35:1 screen is 127", the HC 4000 at max zoom from 13'6" away can only give you an image width of 117". This leaves you with 5" of blank screen on both sides of the image, and you would still have some black bars top and bottom. You'll have to move the PJ back or go with a smaller screen. Smaller screen would likely be the better choice as we still haven't started on the other issues of seating distance and brightness (or lack there of).

Also can you tell me how to calculate the maximum image size under 2.35 setup? Because the Mitsubishi online calculator can only do 16:9.

Go to projector central and use their image calculator. It looks like for that projector at that throw distance the lartgest 2.35 image would be between 49 and 50 inches high.

Also, I don't have any experience with a PJ that does not have lens shift. The HC4000 does not have lens shift and I'm not sure how zooming would work without being able to adjust the alignment as you zoom in or out.

I thought that the zooming would be proportional and the 2.35 image and 1.78 image would fit within the screen exactly. I literally gone through hundred of posts where members seem to have used this projector to do a CIH setup successfully. Pls let me know if my understanding is wrong.

Regardless if you are using an A-Lens of not, you can sit 2x the image. Note the word image and not screen. Because both the zoom shrink method have light spill top and bottom of the Scope screen, so you need to be 2x of the image.

So if you have a 5' tall screen, with an A-Lens you can sit 10'. Zoom or Shrink will have you no closer than 13' 4".

I guess this is one of those examples where you need and A-Lens. No need to move the projector if you have one. Being at the max zoom will have the benefit of giving you the most light available.

A 125" diag 2.35 screens is 116" wide and gives a 100" diag 16x9 picture. A 138" diag 2.35 screen is 127" wide and gives a 110" 16x9 picture.

I'm at 1x viewing distance from my 2.40 screen and think it perfect. Even with zooming, using a Pioneer projector, I don't notice pixels with my 20/10 vision.
