Roomie Remote - Page 14

Hey everyone just purchased roomie remote when I saw it can use x10 commands though not officially supported. I'm trying to figure out why my x10 command I copied from my smartlinc 2412n isn't working. Should the command be in a different format? Any help is appreciated.
How are you getting the commands from Wi-Fi to X10?
I'm using the smartlinc 2412n

I'm assuming this is now the official Roomie Remote thread?

I have 2 questions; I am halfway through all the pages on this thread.

1) Hardware: I need some help understanding how to extend functionality of the IP2IR box to different rooms. I can run any cable necessary; I figure cabling is cheaper than a 2nd & 3rd IP2IR box.
Also, do you think my Cables To Go Impact Acoustics 40430 Repeater can be integrated with this? Otherwise guess I'll sell it on eBay.

2) Software: What is the method for getting the roomie remote data on a new iDevice?
I can't believe it is worth the hassle to wire IR between rooms from 1 iTach - but it can be cheap.

If you want to do it - you can either get a long male-female 3.5mm plug extension or build one with connectors and CAT5. Seems silly to build it. Monoprice has 50' for under $3 50' extension or 75' for under $5. Stereo cable works fine even though you only need mono.

I would just get another iTach and avoid running the cable.

After you switch to Roomie/iTach what do you need the repeater for?

Thanks for the info and link Andrew,
That sentiment is probably true for most on this forum, but I tend to rather save where possible. I have conduit in the places I need so it really is just about 5 min or less of me in the attic.

I already have it setup and thought maybe the Roomie/iTach could go in the next location with an IR cable running back to repeater.
I was wondering if the iTach cable could go right into the repeater's receiver input or would I need to stick the iTach emitter to the receiver (most likely).
Hard to tell - but I think that the IR receiver is just a phototransistor and amp. It would have different signal levels than the IR-Tach outputs.
If you are thinking of using an ir distribution system you may need to use a special cable to take the output from the itach to the ir system. Will you have multiples of the same components in your rooms ? Eg cable boxes ? If they are all on the same itach channel/port you will be controlling them all at once.
I have used the blaster on an itach to a cheap hidden ir distribution system in a room in my house. I did that so I can use roomie but house guests can also use a universal remote. You could use that same method to do multiple rooms but the cost of multiple room ir systems might be very close to just buying more itachs.
Hadn't occurred to me. Of course you could just tape the IR emitter to the IR receiver on the repeater.
Have the app for a week now and am very happy. My Yamaha AVR is the only supported IP unit in my system so I've got everything else using IR with an iTach (2 blu-rays, Apple TV and projector). I'd like to add lights as well. There was a time when home theater was nothing more than a dream for me - let alone this kind of system control. Awesome!

Is there a link of compatable ip devices for the roomie remote?
I am currently using a gc 100-12r with a Denon 3312ci avr and a Denon 2012ci bd connected to Ir with irule. I would love to be able to convert to full ip control, although i believe i read that denon blu-ray players cannot be ip controlled.

Do you mean a list of compatible IP devices? If so, there's one here:

http://www.roomieremote.com/ip-compatibility/

On quick examination, it looks like the 3312ci is on their list, but not the 2012.

[As a complete aside, is "condon" in your sig spelled correctly? If so, I'm intrigued as to what it means.]
It should have an "e" at the end; however, i was drunk one night back in 1987 and got arrested after a fight. The officer wrote in his report "subject stated to officer *** that he does not CONDON what he does but it was fun!". The statement was brought up in court and the appointed attorney asked the officer the same question about his spelling as there were many errors in the report.
I kept it as a joke and used it as a tag. I am not the best spellr but i thought it was fun. Spellr is a joke!

That's very cool! Despite the way it may have sounded, I wasn't trying to be a smarta$$ - a lot of the sigs do have interesting stories behind them, so I thought I'd ask!

Was the IP list of use?
Yes it was thanks! I am researching and maybe getting away from IR and going to a rs-232 format. i have been having a lot of on/off connectivity issues with I/R. not sure if it is the gateway, the irule app, or something else. i find it hard to believe that 2 3.35 mm cables on 2 devices would go bad at the same time. hmmm

Is 16GB memory size sufficient?

The amount of flash memory is not an issue. That's just where your apps, photos, music, etc. are stored. It really depends on what "other stuff" you have on your iPad.

RAM can be an issue, though. I wouldn't not recommend running Roomie on an iPad 1, since it only has 256MB of RAM. That is not enough if you are switching to other apps while using the remote. And you may well want to, since you might want to look things up on the web, or Wikipedia, or use your cable company's program guide, or IMDB, or... When you switch back to Roomie, it will almost always have been kicked-out of memory, and you will lose your place and have to re-start the activity.

I can't really recommend an iPad 1 for ANYTHING any more. Constant crashes due to low memory, because app developers have moved on and bloated their apps.

I recently switched from an iPad 1 to a a New iPad, and all those problems went away.

I imagine an iPad 2 (512MB RAM, vs 1GB RAM on a New iPad) would be sufficient, though.
I have not had that problem on a first gen iPad, nor on an iPhone 4 where I seem to have a zillion apps open all the time. All my i-devices are at latest iOS versions
post #408 of 971
Ditto. I regularly use an iPad/iPad2/iPad3 interchangeably. It's hard to tell any difference in performance.

iPhone 4 has plenty of RAM, same as 4S and iPad 2 - 512MB.

It's not really a matter of having many apps "open" at the same time. It's when you are actually USING those apps in-between uses of Roomie.

I'm surprised others haven't seen the issue on iPad 1.

You will notice, on return to Roomie, that the current activity is no longer selected. The remote is no longer on the screen, and you need to re-select the activity. This is an indicator that Roomie was removed from memory.

It's not a big deal unless you have a long start-up sequence for your activity, or you had scrolled to a place in the program guide and expected it to still be there...

I'm liking the Pandora feedback (artist, album, song) from my Yamaha with version 1.4 although it took me a few tries to get it figured out. Did the same type of setup with the iPod feedback as well.

yep,

I've been avoiding getting Ip2IRs for 2 TVs however when it comes down to it... It's really a heck of a good deal. For less than 100 bucks each you really can't beat it... Even if I wanted to xfer the IR over coax here's what I'd be looking at.

Coax: free since it's already in place...
Xantech IR coax injector 15 shipped
Xantech IR coax extractor 15 shipped
Dual headed IR flasher 10 shipped
IR receiver: 15 shipped
Powerbrick: 10 shipped

So thats what... $65 give or take

30 bucks more and it gives you so much more in the way of functionality / expansion when compared to a single direction non-networked iR link. I finally gave in..

Sometimes you just gotta add up the numbers and they speak for themselves.

Yep... We're also a multi iPad household better half and I both have iPads then she got me an iPad2 for Christmas while she got an iPhone 4s upgrade. I've got my 1st gen reformatted clean and only a very few select apps on it and it's a permanent fixture in the great room / kitchen area while my 2nd gen and her 1st gen tend to walk around with us. Eventually I'd like to get a good deal on a 1st gen for the guest room (when needed) and full time kitchen duty otherwise.

I'm sooo accustom to a nice big screen I just can't see going to an iPod ... My eyes just ain't what they used to be.

I like the new updates mostly. I find the gestures while using the guide are not as fluid as they used to be. On both an ipad2 and iphone 4 we find that a down swipe can move times, instead of channels. Would love the next two upgrades to be;

1) dvr record settings integrated in to the guide. I think it could done simply by having a button sending multiple commands (different for each brand of set top box), but for mine the macro would be *guide *channel *time *record, then the record menu would popup for that recording. I really don't think this sounds like it would be impossible to program, or really that difficult. There is probably a much shorter route on some systems too.
1a) more accurate guide listings. I've noticed my guide program listings are not entirely accurate, maybe update them (databases?) more often?

2) ANDROID! I really think an android version would explode the popularity, and turn many of us current users in to repeat customers (maybe a discount on prepurchased inapp purchases?) I know I'd buy too tablets in an instant, and keep my ipad for computing (even though I bought it solely for roomie).
I would like two-way control of Media Center. It'd be nice to see what's currently playing (more info about it through the guide, etc.). I don't believe what the software currently relies on (MCcontroller) supports it, but vmccontroller or whatever it is - another IP WMC control application does support some commands to get info like that.
I like the new updates but was hoping that they could expand the guide to include information from two different zip codes. Many people get OTA channels for other cities. Shouldn't be that hard to do.

I just switched to Fios and I having issues getting Roomie to work with my STB. The set top box they brought is a Cisco CIS 435 HDC DVR. I have configure the Roomie Remote to use IR on my Global Cache via port 2. I have set it up so that it is linked to the Cisco/Scientific Atlanta IPN and VPN Series (IPTV). When I press a command, the IR goes off but nothing happens. I have tried to move the IR around, but no luck. It worked fine when I had direct TV. Any suggestions?
Try the IR blaster on port 3.
I tried port 3 as well. I even tried a blaster and reconfigured port 3 in the settings for a blaster. Still did not work.
OrthoBoy,

As you're using a blaster and are actually seeing the IR codes being delivered, I'd presume that you are connected correctly (electrically and optically).

I quickly checked the list of IR compatible STBs on the RR website and I couldn't see your model (although I'm not overly familiar with the naming conventions for these devices, so I might be wrong). There were three Cisco/SA variants - have you tried the other two?

I'd guess that it is an IR code issue, not anything to do with connectivity. Roomie support are always very responsive, so I'd suggest pinging them to get their take - they do seem very open to adding new devices into their DB.

If all else fails, there are ways to capture and integrate discrete IR codes into your Roomie configuration.

Hi,

I finally bought into Roomie Remote. I think I want to try to get a dedicated ios device to use as the remote and I wanted to ask which people like better the ipad or ipod touch?

Seems the graphics are sweet on my own ipad (3) but it's big for a remote.

I guess I can set it up on my phone and compare. (I don't think I can set it up for both because of the way my blu ray player ties to a single ios device as a controller.)

Eventually, I want a serial device for my projector. (I'll have to add the support for it or work with Roomie ... maybe they got started. I only want on/off.) I hope to avoid IR completely.
