Yamaha YAS-101 - Page 3

You can use these functions with either the optical or coaxial inputs.

I just hooked this up and am finding the sound pretty terrible. It's either tinny or boomy and doesn't want to go inbetween. I wish that:
  1. It showed a volume number so you knew where you were at
  2. You could adjust the sound more than just the subwoofer level
I'm not sure if I'll keep it. I like the price ($189 @ Costco) and I like the small size and no subwoofer. But it's a speaker so it should sound good.
Do you have the surround option turned on? I find that when in stereo mode, the sound does not seem to be pushed towards me and feels a bit flat, so I just keep it on surround all the time. I turn up sub level all the way and then adjust main volume by ear, or you can watch the leds, it will show amber as the right most led when the volume is turned up all the way, then you can count how many presses it is to notch down the volume level to guide you where the volume is set and give you a rough guide where you like to have the volume set.

I haven't had a problem with tinny sound and I mostly watch Netflix through my Panasonic tv's app. I do listen in a small room, maybe that helps in my case.

I wish there was more tweaking options too since I like to try different settings, but really the sound is fine for me and I've had the bar for about a month now, it seems Yamaha dialed it in correctly for my listening requirements.

I'm not experiencing a tinny sound, either. The tonal quality is good on my unit. Of course, it isn't a home theater system but I use it for cable TV content.
I agree now it's not bad - with a bit of repositioning it sounds better in my room.

if i add a Yamaha YST-FSW050 subwoofer to my yas 101 soundbar, will the subwoofer turn on and off automatically?

http://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio-visual/speaker-systems/subwoofers/yst-fsw050_black__u/?mode=model

it s important for me. in fact sw012 yamana sub is enough for me but i has no auto on and off function

Yamaha YST-FSW050has this feature but some reviewers say auto on off features work. some reviewers says it doesnt work.

from an amazon.com reviewer
"As others have noted, this subwoofer needs a separate trigger cable (included) to automatically turn it on/off remotely via the receiver. If your receiver does not have a trigger jack like mine, you will need to turn on/off the sub with its own power button. It cannot use the RCA signal cable as a trigger like the older Yamaha subs. On the older models the sub is always in low power standby and then fully turns on automatically when it senses an audio signal via the RCA cable. For some reason this model doesn't allow for that older method of automatically turning on/off the sub."

thanks

I hooked the Yamaha sub by plugging in a switched plug that I can operate remotely. I plug the sub into the switch and plug the switch into my powerstrip. When I want the sub on or off I just use the remote control. It works great. Amazon has them.

The Yamaha YAS-101 is nice for the price

I was at Costco where they had a Yamaha ATS1010 (same as the YAS101).
They had it set-up on a interactive display.............. I turned it on and I could not believe the sound that came out of this small system. It sounded Great in this cavernous warehouse !!!

I came home and listened to just how crappy my tv sound was..... and went back and purchased the Yamaha ATS-1010 For the price (costco $190) I don't think you are going to beat it !!
It also looks and feels like it is quality made.

I have a question for all Yamaha YAS-101 owners.

First of all, I just purchased the sound bar a couple of weeks ago and I think it is absolutely fantastic when playing movies (Netflix or Blu-ray discs). About every tech site reviewing the Yamaha sound bar has rated it in their top 5, if not higher. I couldn't be happier considering my small apartment and price that I paid. However, I also play music with the sound bar about 40% of the time (streaming 256k, 320k, or lossless songs via an Apple TV). I know sound bars should not be compared to complete sound systems, but my experience with music has been terrible. The subwoofer is often boomy and overpowering, or the mids are just not really there.

Am I just expecting too much from a sound bar? Will the sound for music improve as the speakers open up after extended use? Would purchasing an external subwoofer improve things? I was considering purchasing the Sony HT-CT550W and returning the Yamaha in hopes of getting better sound for music. Is this a good idea?

Thanks for comments or suggestions.

Nevermind my situation, as I returned the Yamaha sound bar. I determined that my need for good sounding music (along with movies) would be better served with a true speaker setup, rather than a sound bar. I ended up purchasing an entry-level Sony AV receiver and Energy Classic Take 5.1 speakers. The whole setup cost me $465 (including tax). This is $200 more than what I had initially wanted to spend, but I think is the best situation for me going forward.

Have any of you guys noticed that when you turn up the volume to a certain point the sub just turns off? Mine drops off completely a a certain level, which to me feels a little early for any overload protection to kick in. Its not anywhere near distorting. Once I hit this point there is literally no sub activity... if I back it off just one tick the sub comes back in.

Any ideas?

It is probably a protection circuit so that you do not cook the voice coils of the sub unit built into the system. It is, after all, a small soundbar, not a 5.1/7.1 system. By the time you her distortion it is usually too late to do any thing about it! The protection circuits are doing the job as intended by the manufacturer.

I saw the ATS-1010 today in the Mountain View, CA Costco. Now that I've verified it's the same things as the YAS-101, I'll be going back and buying it for $179.
I purchased the yas101 back in September '12
I have kept an eye out for a "better" soundbar in the below $250 mark.... and have yet to find a "quality" soundbar.
For the size the Yamaha produces good sound and looks/feels/sounds like it is Quality..... I don't think there is a better soundbar below $250 price mark at this time.

I agree. Nice crisp audio and a decent amount of bass for a built in subwoofer makes this soundbar a steal for under $200.00.

Can someone confirm if a Direct remote can be programmed to control the volume of this soundbar? I assume the soundbar will turn on and off with the TV. I may buy one of these for a spare room (Panasonic 42" plasma) since I already have a Yamaha subwoofer just laying around collecting dust. On my main TV I have a Panasonic 520 with HDMI hooked up to a Panasonic TV and everything works well together. I may wait until the Panasonic 770 to come out and move the 520 to the spare room.

I have one that seems to control fine with the Directv controller. I made sure to do the "learning" with the TV's controller.

Just an FYI Yamaha now has out and available (began shipping in late November) the new improved model YAS-201 with a wireless sub included as well as Yamaha -Aired technology compatibility. I just hooked one up and thus far am happy with it. Using the Yamaha YIT-W12 - which plugs into a IPod (or other devices) and allows you to be wireless to the sound bar.

I just got the YAS-101 and I am using on the TV stand, however with the feet it is a little too high for the low stand on the 46hx850. If I remove the feet and place it directly on my stand will this change the sound quality as far as bass and the surround effect?
That is likely. If I remember, from seeing one before, the sub speakers port out the bottom of the bar (as well as the end ports) so it would likely muffle the bass.
I need some advice.

I'm thinking of getting the YAS101 (I have it on hold) but here in Canada it's $300.00
Is it worth that price?

I'm also wondering if adding the VST-SW216 at later date would be comparible to buying the 201 which has the sub for only $200.00 more?

I'm hoping that this system will also be good for music listening.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Hi, can anyone tell me if the YAS-101 has fabric or a solid grill covering the speakers? I'm shopping soundbars for a kids' play room and I'm concerned about curious minds causing damage. Thanks in advance.

Fabric, it would be easy for anyone to poke a hole in it. The JBL SB-400 has a solid grill with fabric over it, it appears very durable.

Thanks Eric, will check out the JBL.

I just can't seem to get the remote relay function to work on this puppy. Anyone else found this difficult?

Are you talking about the feature where it relays your remote function out the back of the unit? If so, then I'm in the same boat. I think the sensor on my TV is off to toward the right side and I don't know if that is causing the problem, but I cant get it to work either.

Did you turn the relay on as per the instructions on pg.9 of the manual? Default is off.
