OK, you got me there.biggrin.gif

A couple of weeks back I re-watched the Blade series (after buying the new BDs).
NO question, The Man Vamp kicks a$$ and takes names...wink.gif

I'll be renting first.
The plot (as I read it) makes me think this may be designed for the Twilight crowd than others....wink.gif
I think you would be pleasantly surprised by the effectiveness of the plot. I read all three books in The Hunger Games Trilogy and thoroughly enjoyed them. I saw the film in IMAX and although I didn't like its excessive use of extreme closeups and quick cuts, I thought it was excellent in other ways. Jennifer Lawrence was outstanding as the intrepid heroine, Katniss Everdeen, and the supporting cast was excellent too, particularly Woody Harrelson and Elizabeth Banks. I preordered the BD from Amazon so should have it in hand soon.

To be honest, I am very tempted to Blind Buy.

I haven't read the books and have little inkling (just a rough sketch) into the plot.

This bothers me though: "excessive use of extreme closeups and quick cuts."
I really REALLY hate that B.S. cost-cutting form of filmmaking.mad.gif

The cast is a BIG plus....some of my favorite actors.

So, ultimately....I dunno.confused.gif

However, I DID put it at the top of my NF queue.
If I am wowed, I'll buy.wink.gif

I probably should reiterate that the extreme closeups and quick cuts were bad. The film was so good in every other way, though, that I ended up liking it a lot. Because you still subscribe to NF I think your plan to rent the BD before you decide whether to buy it is is probably the way for you to go.

Can someone perhaps in the dvd business why in the heck is this released on the 18th this sat? I mean what kind of weird date to release such a big film on a sat and not the usual Tue. I hope this is not a bad omen for disappointment as need something to wash out the 2 hr I just wasted with The Raid...D+

Couldn't agree more. The Saturday release date left me scratching my head too.

It's because Lionsgate is wanting to create a circus atmosphere over the release. It's getting harder and harder to stir up excitement for films these days, so putting it on an odd day of the week and doing it at midnight breaks the tradition and harks back to the movie's theatrical midnight release. All to suggest that the film is "special."

Bottom line, marketing.

Geuss I never saw the Blade flics and just picked up 1 and 3 to get the Dark Knight Rises $5 vouchers. Pretty cool deal. Paid $4.99 for the movies, after trading in some old DVD's, then used the $5 voucher against my DKR movie tickets. So they paid me $.02 total to buy the blurays.tongue.gif

Just got to the first and enjoyed it. Heard they go down in quality after that but no big deal.

They mentioned in the bluray review thread that rental versions are NOT lossless 7.1, but DD5.1. Anyone else heard this?

Guess I will find out Saturday. The audio is supposed to be pretty good for this but no chance the room full of teenage girls in my theater will care either way.eek.gifwink.gif

I think it's just rental copies they're referring to.

- I really doubt it was a cost cutting decision. The movie had quite a budget and it shows in set and costume design. It was most likely a stylistic choice to avoid the violence being too graphic.

The AV quality of the series is the least with the 1st one.....if that is what you mean.
If not, the 1st is the best of the bunch.wink.gif

Quick cutting, shakey-cam, and extreme close-ups HIDE things like cheap backgrounds, cheap costumes, cheap sets, etc.
A talented editor and/or director can make anything LOOK or SEEM like a million bucks.

From a studio's POV, movies are about maximum ROI (like everything in capitalism).
It's important to keep that in mind.wink.gif

Let's hope the director change will get rid of shaky-cam. There's plenty of PG-13 movies with brutality that don't employ that technique so I don't see the need.

I'm likely in the minority but I found the books to get better as they went along. I'm personally a huge Mockingjay fan. I understand and even agree with many of the complaints but it was the first book in a long time that had strong emotional impact on me.

Yes, there are plenty of PG13 that depict brutality, but how many of them are using young teenagers as the perps and victims?

Good point - I don't know the answer to that one.

Time has come finally and netflix just shipped it out today so hopefully this will be a good weekend. Be back tom and give my take if it was worth the big hype.

- Agreed, but in this movie, I don't think that's the case. For example, one of the worst shaky cam sequences is during the selection of the District 12 tributes. The town is very simple and the stage is also simple. The use of shaky cam isn't used to hide the set. Same with the actual set of the Hunger Games. Most of the action takes place in or around wooded areas, so there's no set to hide. The costumes in the actual games are also very simple.

This got big hype? Only worth while aspect of this move was Elizabeth Banks... the rest of it was like a new spin on The Running Man with less humor, less violence, more CG, and more cheeeezzzzz.

The only rental BD that I can confirm came with only lossy audio was Red (2010). To say that I was not a happy camper when i discovered what had been done would understate the case.smile.gif

I've reserved a Blu-ray rental at Redbox and will watch tonight. If the rental has a lossey 5.1 soundtrack it's just a move against people who rip off copies. My wife read the books and is the one interested in this, we never bothered to see it in the theater.

And they're both Summit releases. Yes, I know Lionsgate bought Summit, but they're still sticking to the lossy MO.
