Pokekevin's family room/ theater

Finally got around to taking pictures of my home theater set up. Used to be messy with alot of cables and a makeshift table for the htpc but eventually moved everything neatly into a cabinet.

Current Setup:
Samsung PN59D6500DF TV
6.2 setup w/ Denon AVR 1611
L/R: Atlantic Technology 451e THX
C: Atlantic Technology 453 THX
SL/SR: MLT-2 (Paradigm Cinema 90s)
SB: MLT-2 Center (Paradigm too)
Sub1:Outlaw LFM-1 EX subwoofer (set to max extension and raised about an inch higher)
Sub2: Boston Acoustics VR2000 powered by a Behringer EP2500
HTPC w/ 20ishTB storage

Future:
Nothing in the plans yet...upgradinitis mightve been cured...

Past:
The Samsung Era: My first step into Home Theatre2005-2011
HTPC connected to a Samsung HTQ-45 HTIB
I always wanted to set up a decent home theater but didn't want to jump the gun when I bought my first plasma in 05 since I had barely any knowledge on theater stuff! So I started off with the samsung htib with a Popcorn Hour A-110

BEFORE. Messy yes...interim solution

This photo was taken in the summer of 2011. By then my Samsung HTQ-45 had given me over 5 years of great service. I originally bought it from bestbuy when I bought my first ever big screen TV which was a Philips Ambilight 50 inch model. Thats the infamous 5 year tv that suffers from poor capacitors. Tried repairing it but failed and had to dump it and replace with the current samsung plasma.

Anyways back to the HTQ-45. I remember when I first bought it home I felt like i was on top of the world! It was my first intro to 5.1 sound and I loved it!
I knew I was going to upgrade eventually but time went by and I kept telling myself how pleased I was with it. It was supposed to be upgraded by 2008 but instead it outlasted till 2011.

Today I now use it as a bedroom system and its also jerry rigged to my alarm clock. Talk about a 5.1 alarm clock lol

Denon HTIB era:
Short lived July 2011-The end of July...upgradanitis
Recently decided to upgrade the equipment after 5 happy years with my samsung htib

Using a
HTPC connected to a Denon AVR 1611
about 5tb of actual storage and 3tb of back up capability (thru a media sonic enclosure)
The speakers are the ones that came with the Denon DHT htibs. Soon gonna upgrade.

I browse my collection through MediaPortal/StreamMP Skin/Moving Pictures plugin

concessions + HTPC + TRON HARD DRIVE (seagate that looks tron like to me) + Hard Drives + Dvds + Karaoke Mics

Transferring data from the netbook to the enclosure (you can see it on the bottom

TV plus speakers

Seats + Rear speakers

subwoofer

Favorite scene from Last Samurai

Martin Logan MLT-2 Era/the advent of 6.2 End of July 2011-December 27, 2011
Amazingly I barely took any pics of the actual setup

During this phase I also added a Outlaw LFM-1 EX and used my old center from the denon for a 6.2 set up. Wanted to do 7.2 but my room didn't work well with it. Plus the WAF wouldn't agree on it.

The Energy RC-10 Era!December 27, 2011 - March 20, 2012
Been cured of upgradinitis! for now...
Just recently bought the RC-10s along with the V-Mini center. EXTREMELY pleased with them Can't wait to finish breaking them in.

I also finally took off the grills for all the speakers and amazingly the WAF has been positive . Now using my old MLT-2 center for the 6th speaker.

Some scene from black hawk down

I also always wanted to get rid of the vibrations from my outlaw so I decided to try a simple DIY instead of purchasing a subdude.
Used 4 sanding sponges from Home depot. It also raised the sub a little bit and overall the sound quality seems better

Little cheesy intro i made with mspaint before movies play

The Energy RC-10 Era! + RC LCRMarch 20, 2012 - I DONT KNOW

Replaced the V-Mini Center with an RC LCR. Wasn't pleased with the performance I was getting so the upgrade was necessary!
Also added a second LFM-1EX (not pictured) which is only temporary and will be placed in my dedicated theater once I get going with that

Atlantic Technology 450e THX eraApril 4th 2012 - ?
Recently bought the front 3 speakers that make up the AT 450e THX set from a good friend. Yea I know I barely had the Energy RC-LCR for week. He came over and helped set it up and damn does it sound good! Don't think I'll be upgrading this room anymore as I am now saving money towards a dedicated room.

Also forgot to add that I replaced the paradigm PDR-10 with a Boston Acoustics VR2000 which is powered by a Behringer EP2500.

Thanks for reading! Hope you like it!

Thanks! Well I was gonna do the whole custom "20th century fox" intro but I felt that was unoriginal so I went with the imax logo instead lol. Also Im not that tech savy with animation/film programs so I had to improvise!

Made the image (domax) in mspaint using the imax logo as a reference. The font is Zurich Bolt Extended which you can find online. After that I imported the image into Windows Live Movie Maker and used one of the effects (the black curve on the right). As for audio, I wanted something epic so I weighed my options. Naturally Hans Zimmer would be my choice but I also gave the Tron Legacy soundtrack a go. In the end I picked Hans Zimmer's Mind Heist from inception. I split the mp3 with WAV Mp3 audio splitter and imported that to movie maker and tada! hope that helps! If you have knowledge in film programs Im sure you can easily make a great intro!

The second intro i have is the same but has filmography 2010 after it to really hype up the viewers!

my bluray MKVs are played thru media portal but I set it to use MPC HD as an external player. I was never able to get DTS to work thru Mediaportals player so Im fine using MPC. As for bluray discs I use power dvd too!

Here's some pics of the mediaportal interface Im using

Thanks ddgtr!

I love the drive but the base ( I think where the usb controller is) runs pretty darn hot. I cool all the ext drives using a 120mm fan.

What kind of TV?

I use XBMC for my mkvs, nothing beats these free media centers!

Especially if you do torrents!

Nice setup!

Nice setup!

I was originally going to try out XBMC but once I got mediaportal going I was quite happy Only issue I had was I could never get the internal player to work with DTS soundtracks so I had to use MPC HC.

The TV is a 2011 Samsung PN59D6500 (missing a few numbers and letters there lol). I was going to get the D7000/D8000 but word of how the black filter screen peeling scared me away! the 6500 replaced my old 50 inch philips which got the 7 red blinking lights of doom!

What are torrents?

Just added some LEDs behind the seating position. Going to see how this turns out...hahah

Testing them to make sure they aren't broken. You can see the poptart bag. Gotta have poptarts lol.

Finally got dark enough to test! Feels "easier" to watch transitions now in films

I control the leds thru a small remote. You can see I squeezed the remote into a tight cranny

I'll be showing IMAX Hubble (2010) this weekend for a movie night for my science loving friends lol

Just ordered the MLT2s. Having a DIFFICULT time explaining to my girlfriend why im replacing larger speakers (Denon 391XP kit speakers) w/ smaller ones....these better sound good...or this is going to get very...annoying

popcorn tubs...turned out alot bigger than expected

New speakers came! Box was a bit heavy so I left them there for sometime (had just came back from a 10 mile run and didnt feel like moving em)

Got lazier and left it here for another period of time

About 2 hours later.. WHAMO!

Decided to try to use the old sub that came with the Denon to do a 5.2 system after a few on the sub section persuaded me. Will take some time to calibrate it correctly. They will be positioned on the left and right of the seating position.

Just testing out the new sub

Martin Logo MLT2 speakers. For a satellite speaker they are incredibly loud. Way louder than my old larger speakers. But like I said...tough to get the gf t like.
They will be paired with a Denon AVR 1611. Was considering creating a 7.2 system with the extra 2 speakers I have but thats in the works

Hey,

when you receive your Outlaw LFM-EX can you post your impressions? Thanks
Nice setup!

We have the same speaker stands now.

I like them though, very sturdy. Sanus steel foundations, right?

You may end up moving the LEDs though

Good informative thread here, thanks.

Lfm ex just arrived. Had to remoce the sub itself out of the box to get it into my car. The people outside sure thought it was strange to see a person unpacking a subwoofer in a parking lot lol. Will share pics soon

Very nice job! The LEDs idea is really good

Thanks I know your supposed to put it behind the TV but the guest love to have it behind the seating. "Guests" as in my relatives/girlfriends friends/ and such. When I have MY friends over they arent on because we know how to enjoy a film .

Recently just jerry rigged a old denon htib center channel to the rear where the fire place is for a 6.2 setup. Pretty shabby

Constructive criticism works wonders, no need to nitpick in his thread.

Hey decided to checkout your link after you checked out mine. Sweet. Yeah the cabling can be tough to make nice and neat but as long as you and the wife are happy, that's all that matters. I see you have some Martin Logans. How are they? Which models did you get?
