In a completely dark room watching a blu ray, is the Elite more or less reflective than the Panasonic?

Under those circumstances neither one would have any reflections.

EDIT: Unless there was a 60" - 70" mirror directly in front of the displays. wink.gif

I've been following this thread for a few days(reading all 340 pgs) and have a question about warranty coverage. If any of you bought online and needed warranty service, how is it handled?
Reading the Elite website leads one to think warranty would not be honored if bought online.

I am very interested in the Elite as a replacement for my theater Tv, a Mitsubishi WS-65907. It is still going strong but I am ready to upgrade my equipment. I briefly considered a VT50 but I have granddaughters(6 & 8) over every weekend and they watch a lot of Netflix, the thought of IR scares me to death. Besides, after spending a few minutes at the local BB watching an Elite 70, I'm sold...

As long as you buy from a Elite /Sharp authorized Dealer the warranty service is Top Notch ... smile.gif

IIRC there are no official elite dealers online. You can buy from one of online dealers cheaper but elitelcdtv.com does imply that it will not be covered if you do.

This reminds me of the question: "What weighs more, 100lbs of rocks or 100lbs of feathers?"

Wrong there - I bought mine online from Cleveland Plasma, registered it, was sent the confirmation e-mail and recently received the e-mail for the extended warranty.

It wasn't a trick question, i think screen coating matters, more of an issue in daylight.

Fully agree, it definitely matters with ambient light, but your original query was "in a completely dark room" which prompted the response above smile.gif

Same here, but I'm not sure what defines an "online dealer." If you notice Cleveland Plasma only advertises the Elite and MSRP on their web site and they do not sell it online, you have to call to order the set.

Same here except bought at VE.

I don't recall calling but we did have several e-mails exchanged. At least by my definition, that qualifies as online retailing, i.e. I did not visit a B&M store. As always, your and others' definition may vary smile.gif.

So a replacement came today for my 60" with a bad IR sensor. The old set had a build date of August 2011. The one thing I noticed immediately was the screen seemed to have more of a matte finish and was less reflective.

It doesn't seem to affect PQ, but it does cut down on reflections a bit during the daytime. It's still not exactly the least reflective set I've seen, but it's somehow better than my first.

I didn't get the build date off the box, and they mounted it before I could get the serial number off the back (I will try to get the SN this weekend), but it had the latest firmware already installed, so that suggests it was built in or after March '12.

Anyone else hear of Sharp changing the screen design in recent builds?

Unfortunately my friend's 70" with the replaced sensor was working fine, but he told me tonight it too went south. frown.gif

Well that's good to hear. The official Elite websight definitely infers you will not be covered under the limited warranty if you do not buy from an official dealer.

Statements such as that are typically used to try and force people to buy from an authorized dealer. Pioneer use to use this practice and I have yet to hear of a denied warranty from someone who purchased a Pioneer online.smile.gif

Well, since you've never heard of it, we must be safe.

Thanks! smile.gif

I do believe Cleveland Plasma is an authorized dealer. They just happen to sell or at least advertise online smile.gif.

Well here is a pic from my ELITE, after getting the Pany VT50 back and setting it up I realized what performer the ELITE is, and going back down to 65 inches is not advised! Never go up and try to go back down again, very disappointing to say the least! So the VT50 went back again and I picked my ELITE back up a day later, I'm sure I am not welcome back at BB for awhile now tongue.gif Here is a picture from "The Grey" on blu-ray after I got CNET settings dialed in again, it is from my LG Nitro HD so its not perfect but it was a good shot that shows the detail this set can render.

LOL! Monkey, Plasma is dead and/or dying. Welcome back

That is hilarious. They probably have your picture up in the break room as "crazy customer approach cautiously".

I think that is one of the things that always gets lost in the shuffle as the Elite does have the larger screen and to a lot of us (including myself) is well worth the higher price tag.

Ok so here it is, this is a first attempt at reproducing what I'm actually seeing on the Elite Vs what you are seeing in just a single photograph. Note: The color has not been altered on any of the images, just the detail you are seeing in the pictures below. I have taken 3 exposures of the same picture on the Elite each at different exposure times ranging all the way up to 5sec. As you can see from the 3 examples of each photo set any singularly taken photo at any exposure time does not contain all of the detail you need to accurately reproduce what you are seeing in person. I have used Adobe Photoshop to merge the images to the best of my ability in hopes to achieve just that result. I hope everyone enjoys the pictures I have taken but please remember that these images are only supposed to give you a better idea or approximation of what we owners are actually seeing in person but in no way represent a completely accurate representation. Let's just say that the accuracy will increase as my skill increases so please enjoy. wink.gif

You should go back to BB and demand a full refund for your Elite! ...You know just for fun tongue.gif

I think you made the right choice cool.gif

Those pics look like they were taken from The Tree of Life but I may be mistaken.

Yeah the manager of magnolia who is always there was called up and I bet he knew who it was before he even got up to the customer service desk at the front. He just said I'm confused, you brought back the VT50 for an Elite, then the Elite for the VT50, then back again. I told him he should just let me bring both home so I can get a good side by side to make up my mind, he just laughed. I will have to lie low now for a year or so at least till the new Elite comes out, or if Pany ever makes a plasma bigger then 65 inches and less then 18 grand like their 80 incher, doubt that would happen though. Anyway, this Eilite will stay in the home for awhile, they would have to come up with something miraculous on the next Elite for me to lay down that kind of scratch for display again. Nice to be back with a window on the world again!

Colors just don't seem as riche or saturated as the VT50, or most plasmas for that matter. I currently have cnet settings dialed in on my Elite and the color always looks washed out. The only way I can describe it is by comparing water color to oil painting. The picture never seems sharp to me either, not sure if its a result of such high contrast or what. The motion just seems to be inhiernt to lcd tvs, they just cant perform like a plasma. This tv comes close to being like a plasma, but it just isn't there..can't wait to get my VT50 back...Oh and if you game at all do not choose the Elite..seriouse screen lag on FPS!

Monkey, may I ask what brought you back to the elite. Remembering your posts I got the impression you preferred the VT. EVERYTHING you stated in your post that I quoted would lead me and others to believe the VT won in every category unequivocally. Really confused and would like to know what changed your mind besides the size difference.
