I'm not in a bind for a set so I have time. Only thing that might throw a wrench in that plan is if the current Elites sell out or stock gets real low and no changes are announced. As close as CES is (2 weeks) I would kick myself if I bought now and they made some changes I felt were worth waiting for.
Just my $.02 wink.gif

Yea I thought the same thing you did couple of weeks ago. Until my wife said.. "So you don't want the 70X5 no more because their might be a new one that comes out soon?" "And if their is another one that comes out and it's 10-15k forget it!" "You mines as well get the 70 now because the price is right and two you always change sets every 3 years anyway!" "Btw, what are you gonna do with that Kuro Elite 151 now?" Then I said... aaah! I'll put that in our bedroom?
So yea I got the 70. Guess ill just wait 3 years from now. And hopefully 4k will be full blast on the market and below 10k. Lol.

I went back a few pages and didn't see this asked, but if Sharp goes under next year does anyone anticipate problems with the warranty or getting it properly serviced? I'm jumping back and forth between the Sony 65HX950 and the 70 Elite.

Same here. Couple weeks ago i was jumping between sets too. 65VT50 or 70X5. After reading countless reviews and going on different forums. And like all displays which have their share of problems. None is perfect. I went to see both displays side by side. Playng them simultaneously in HD 2D and then 3D both on THX mode. I was just in awe of the 70X5. Wow.. them deep blacks. Im thinking the blacks on these Elites are darker then my pro calibrated Kuro Elite 151FD.smile.gif

I think we all learned in 2008 that any company, no matter how big, can fail at anytime weather they are reporting issues or not. I do not think Sharp would close, to further this, they only own 15% of Pioneer. So in the end they would sell of there shares and Pioneer would be calling the shots once again.
The problem with CES, is that its just a show "of what may be", or "may not be". Many of items at CES never make the market. Look how many times Samsung cancelled the 75" unit. Sharp has been promising a cheaper version of the Elite for two years now. In the end CES really gives us nothing concrete frown.gif Waiting on CES is kinda pointless..........
The only advantage of waiting for CES is if there is a massive jump in technology and money is no object to you. Or, if the 945 had been released it was supposed to be basically an Elite at a much lower price. But that turned out to be vaporware. And if there was a big new tech such as 4K incorporated, you are going to pay a massive premium to be the first to get it. That would lead you to wait awhile to bring the price down. But once those prices come down, there is a new tech around the corner enticing you to wait even longer. Then the whole process starts over again.

Yea.. And when CES announced a new set to start selling by the 1st,2nd,3rd,or 4th quarter of the year. They may mean the quarters of 3 years later from now or never.. Lol..

Yea, I considered the VT50 for awhile but quickly disregarded that option.

65HX-950: Many reports of banding, higher instances of dead pixels than the Elite. Slight blooming where the Elite has almost none.

70"Elite: Reports of multiple recent sets have bad DSE (green bands) and many having remote problems. Company on the verge of bankruptcy which also usually leads to lower quality control.

$5199 vs $5764.

Flip a coin? lol

Bro.. Just make sure where ever you get your set. Get the insurance plan if their is one. And make sure you read the policy before you get it. I mostly get most of my electronics from BB locally. And anything I get over $100 I get the insurance. And BB at my town does a pretty good job replacing it if $h!t happens.
Now when I purchased my 70X5 from Magnolia before I even ask to get the 4 year plan they explained every thing about it. Now what got me is that they said even if they set goes obsolete and their still problems with the set within the 4 years they'll replace it with the newest set that's in the market. Like the 2nd or 3rd gen Elite if that's going to happen.lol...
Btw, BB does price match with local and online pricing..biggrin.gif

Good stuff!

Yea, I brought the PC Richards picture of the Black Tag sale on the 70" Elite to the BB manager yesterday. At first he claimed it was a photoshop lol. Then once he found out it wasnt, he asked me if I really wanted to risk shopping online for a TV. Then when I told him I knew BB policy had changed to require price matching nationwide, he disappeared for about ten minutes. He came back and grudgingly agreed to that price. I only have till the 31st to agree to it though.

I have tried calling the Sharp Elite division for the last couple days and all I have gotten is a message stating Sharp Electronics is closed because of the weather. Try again tomorrow.

Has this happen before? I have a 70" serial number I want to find out when it was build.

I would like some serious input to my situation:

I am going to get a 70" and have a great price from one of our sponsors and ready to go BUT here is my delima. I know where I can pick up a new Elite 70" from a major retailer for $4500.00 plus tax.

Here is the situation:

The TV has a slight indentation about 2/3rds from the top of the screen, about 6" from the right side, around 1/2" long and looks like the end of a thumb nail was pushed into the panel.

I placed Baraka in the player and watched. It was never noticeable until that area had gone to white and nothing was moving. I can barely see it from 14 feet away. No one else watching would even notice it.

This would be a saving of $1350.00 (after taxes) savings from the best pricing that I have so far. I know some of you would NEVER pick up a set with that flaw but WOULD YOU?

My guess is I could live with the flaw that would not be seen that much but not sure??????????????

What say you?

No way would I do it for anything less than 50% off retail. You don't know if the effects of that indention will get worse. And how did it occur? They they drop it during shipping or setup? If so, you may only be seing the early stages of a problem that will get much worse. I would rather have a lower end TV in perfect condition than a damaged Elite for the same price. Kind of defeats the purpose of getting one.

Interesting though with sound thinking.

Thanks

Here is the thing with that, lets say the bezel was scratched or the TV was dented, the manufacturer would never deny warranty rights. Lets say this unit above had a line develop in that area, you could forget it, they would not cover saying it was physical damage. Be careful. I do not care what you have in writing either, the manufacturer would deny the claim.

They will price match some online retailers, like Amazon.
The BB employee price for the 70" is slightly above that price but below $5K.
If you know someone who works at BB, get them to get the TV for you and slide him a couple of bills for the favor.

Yes, I am talking about BB. Their price for the TV is $4500.

You guys are making me re-think.

Chris

Thanks for the input.

Being retired and no way to increase the income that is coming in, I am always trying to save as much as possible and $4500 sounded pretty good until I start hearing from forum members.

So, maybe in the long run, this deal could end up being a disaster. It looks like I should go ahead and spend more to get a unit that has a better chance of lasting the years it needs too.

For the last three days I have tried calling the Elite Pro line to discuss this set only to discover that they are closed because of the weather. This seems very strange to me. Is it really the weather or are they laying people off and going BK?

Chris

I'll get to you.

As a follow up to the $4500 70" Elite that I purchased from BB but did not take delivery as of yet.

I called Sharp Elite today and Chris of Cleveland Plasma was absolutely correct. Regarding the small crease in the panel: If anything fails because of that small 1/2" crease such as: pixels die underneath, a small line/crack is created, etc, etc. the warranty will not cover it.

Today, I head back to BB and cancel the order.

Thanks forum members and Cleveland Plasma for your input. You will make me spend more $$$$ but could have saved me from a massive head ache.

I finally pulled the trigger on the 70" and it will be here thursday. I think the prices go back up after today and didn't want to pass up 5700.

Congrads. It's a great display. I haven't followed current pricing as I bought the set about a year ago and paid near MSRP. A lot of money for sure but this set is great enough until an 80 OLED set comes along. Nice to be off the merry go round. 70 is awesome but I still think my final set will be 80 someday. (final as in four plus years ownership and umm being content).

I'm still blown away with set for Blu-ray and Football. I'm sure you will be thrilled.

I think OLED will be a very long time away now. There have been a few news articles in the last couple of days stating that Samsung and LG have now shifted away from OLED and are concentrating on 4K. The manufacturing process has turned out to be a nightmare for making large panel OLED's with only a 10% success rate on making a proper panel. Looks like they are going to bet on 4K sets being the next wave of TV's now. I saw the 84" 4K tv in houston. It was nice, but the jump from 1080P to 4K is not nearly as big as the jump from standard def to HD. And it takes a really big TV or sitting really close to even notice it. If OLED TV's were coming out any time soon(next couple of years) at a reasonable price I would probably wait on that.
OLED, 4K anything to suck the consumers into buying new sets.
Yea!... And how we DO get sucked in it. Funny thing is after we go see a new set with all the newest tech pack in it. We go home at night thinking about it saying " wow! That's a nice set". I really want one. Then before we know it? Bam! Got em! I remember when I got my Pio Kuro Elite 151FD I two and half years ago I said to myself this set should last me at least 4-6 years. So after I got it I've been out of the loop for the 2-1/2 years. Not keeping up on the newest sets coming out. Haven't been on this forum keeping up to date. Of course I heard of 3D that was the newest thing for home sets? Thinking that there will be no set ever to even match the Kuro Elite. I even didn't know that Pioneer gave the name "Elite" the rights to Sharp. And that Sharp made a set under the name Elite.lol.. Until last month when my kids told me when will I get a 3D set. So I said ok, maybe by Christmas there will be sales on 3D sets. Hmm, maybe a 50" 3d set that can replace a 5 year old 32" TV set in my master bedroom.
Ok so here I go shopping around for a inexpensive set. Going through the sets at BB working my way down to Magnolia. Until I see this 70" set that says Elite. I said to myself wow you mean Pioneer is back in the loop again? So the BB sales person explained to me everything about the Pioneer and Sharp story. First I doubt the set since it was manufactured by Sharp. Until the sales person said wait let me put a bluray in. So he puts in Avengers and was I blown away. Then I tried the 3D. After that I said to myself I want this set. So now my 70X5 gets delivered this Friday. So now I have to move my 151 to my room. And 70 will go in the HT room.
So I went from a $1500 set to a $6400 set. Never seen that one coming. Yea.. I got suckered! lol...

Well the manufacturers have to keep coming up with the next new tech to keep us upgrading. But for several decades, the only TV tech was CRT tvs'. And those typically lasted 15 years or more. Not sure how they survived so well back then but cant keep from losing 5 billion a year now without us taking out a second mortgage to upgrade to the newest model.
@JimShaw, Glad you averted a possible headache. That is a really good price though and if you could of got BB to stand behind it, that may have been just as good as the manufacturer's warranty....just a thought....but you can't go wrong with Cleveland Plasma and the forum sponsors here IMO.

I've been lurking this thread for over a year now hah since I've been tempted since day 1 release of this tv. Have a 151FD since release and have been very happy till this very day....moving into a new house and the opportunity has cropped up to build a new setup (moving the old setup into another room) in the family room.....I'm almost 99% certain it'll be the 70x5.....I doubt anything @ CES will change my mind. I hear some rumors from supposed insiders that there will be an 80" Elite but no other details......4k is definitely on the horizon as most mentioned as the next "best thing since sliced bread" but I'm completely not convinced.....even if the 80" elite is true and they fix the small issues like the pulsing and color....it's going to be major $$.....and then there's the 4k sets....also major $$ for technology that practically has 0 native content......seeing how it's been this long since high def has been out and it hasn't completely caught on yet (most are still using dvds), 4k seems to be a desperate reach /excuse to sell tvs......not to mention the resolution increase would only be applicable on the larger screens.....I see little point for this until the day comes where a 90" 4k screen becomes under $5-$6k....otherwise there is no way this will catch on anytime soon.
Hmm.. I wonder if Sharp does come out with a 80" Elite. I say if they do, it'll go for at least 10-12k ball part.

Considering the obscene amount of money Sharp lost last year, I can't imagine them making an 80" elite. The last few articles I read about new tech from sharp involved "Moth Eye" technology. But it was also quite expensive. No idea if they are going to bring that to fruitation though.

I can't imagine them making a 2nd gen Elite. After losing that much money. If they do they'll end up like Pioneer. Kill the video line.

Exactly. To lose almost 6 billion dollars in an economy not even in recession says they are 100% in the wrong direction of mass market demands. If they even attend the CES I bet it's just for show. I doubt anything they demo will actually be released. It might be their Moth Eye technology but probably wont ever be intended for production. Maybe to show their value to a prospective buyer.
