Official Sharp Elite PRO-70X5 and 60X5 Owners Thread - Page 391

As a follow up to the $4500 70" Elite that I purchased from BB but did not take delivery as of yet.

I called Sharp Elite today and Chris of Cleveland Plasma was absolutely correct. Regarding the small crease in the panel: If anything fails because of that small 1/2" crease such as: pixels die underneath, a small line/crack is created, etc, etc. the warranty will not cover it.

Today, I head back to BB and cancel the order.

Thanks forum members and Cleveland Plasma for your input. You will make me spend more $$$$ but could have saved me from a massive head ache.

I finally pulled the trigger on the 70" and it will be here thursday. I think the prices go back up after today and didn't want to pass up 5700.

Congrads. It's a great display. I haven't followed current pricing as I bought the set about a year ago and paid near MSRP. A lot of money for sure but this set is great enough until an 80 OLED set comes along. Nice to be off the merry go round. 70 is awesome but I still think my final set will be 80 someday. (final as in four plus years ownership and umm being content).

I'm still blown away with set for Blu-ray and Football. I'm sure you will be thrilled.

I think OLED will be a very long time away now. There have been a few news articles in the last couple of days stating that Samsung and LG have now shifted away from OLED and are concentrating on 4K. The manufacturing process has turned out to be a nightmare for making large panel OLED's with only a 10% success rate on making a proper panel. Looks like they are going to bet on 4K sets being the next wave of TV's now. I saw the 84" 4K tv in houston. It was nice, but the jump from 1080P to 4K is not nearly as big as the jump from standard def to HD. And it takes a really big TV or sitting really close to even notice it. If OLED TV's were coming out any time soon(next couple of years) at a reasonable price I would probably wait on that.
OLED, 4K anything to suck the consumers into buying new sets.
Yea!... And how we DO get sucked in it. Funny thing is after we go see a new set with all the newest tech pack in it. We go home at night thinking about it saying " wow! That's a nice set". I really want one. Then before we know it? Bam! Got em! I remember when I got my Pio Kuro Elite 151FD I two and half years ago I said to myself this set should last me at least 4-6 years. So after I got it I've been out of the loop for the 2-1/2 years. Not keeping up on the newest sets coming out. Haven't been on this forum keeping up to date. Of course I heard of 3D that was the newest thing for home sets? Thinking that there will be no set ever to even match the Kuro Elite. I even didn't know that Pioneer gave the name "Elite" the rights to Sharp. And that Sharp made a set under the name Elite.lol.. Until last month when my kids told me when will I get a 3D set. So I said ok, maybe by Christmas there will be sales on 3D sets. Hmm, maybe a 50" 3d set that can replace a 5 year old 32" TV set in my master bedroom.
Ok so here I go shopping around for a inexpensive set. Going through the sets at BB working my way down to Magnolia. Until I see this 70" set that says Elite. I said to myself wow you mean Pioneer is back in the loop again? So the BB sales person explained to me everything about the Pioneer and Sharp story. First I doubt the set since it was manufactured by Sharp. Until the sales person said wait let me put a bluray in. So he puts in Avengers and was I blown away. Then I tried the 3D. After that I said to myself I want this set. So now my 70X5 gets delivered this Friday. So now I have to move my 151 to my room. And 70 will go in the HT room.
So I went from a $1500 set to a $6400 set. Never seen that one coming. Yea.. I got suckered! lol...

Well the manufacturers have to keep coming up with the next new tech to keep us upgrading. But for several decades, the only TV tech was CRT tvs'. And those typically lasted 15 years or more. Not sure how they survived so well back then but cant keep from losing 5 billion a year now without us taking out a second mortgage to upgrade to the newest model.
@JimShaw, Glad you averted a possible headache. That is a really good price though and if you could of got BB to stand behind it, that may have been just as good as the manufacturer's warranty....just a thought....but you can't go wrong with Cleveland Plasma and the forum sponsors here IMO.

I've been lurking this thread for over a year now hah since I've been tempted since day 1 release of this tv. Have a 151FD since release and have been very happy till this very day....moving into a new house and the opportunity has cropped up to build a new setup (moving the old setup into another room) in the family room.....I'm almost 99% certain it'll be the 70x5.....I doubt anything @ CES will change my mind. I hear some rumors from supposed insiders that there will be an 80" Elite but no other details......4k is definitely on the horizon as most mentioned as the next "best thing since sliced bread" but I'm completely not convinced.....even if the 80" elite is true and they fix the small issues like the pulsing and color....it's going to be major $$.....and then there's the 4k sets....also major $$ for technology that practically has 0 native content......seeing how it's been this long since high def has been out and it hasn't completely caught on yet (most are still using dvds), 4k seems to be a desperate reach /excuse to sell tvs......not to mention the resolution increase would only be applicable on the larger screens.....I see little point for this until the day comes where a 90" 4k screen becomes under $5-$6k....otherwise there is no way this will catch on anytime soon.

Hmm.. I wonder if Sharp does come out with a 80" Elite. I say if they do, it'll go for at least 10-12k ball part.

Considering the obscene amount of money Sharp lost last year, I can't imagine them making an 80" elite. The last few articles I read about new tech from sharp involved "Moth Eye" technology. But it was also quite expensive. No idea if they are going to bring that to fruitation though.

I can't imagine them making a 2nd gen Elite. After losing that much money. If they do they'll end up like Pioneer. Kill the video line.

Exactly. To lose almost 6 billion dollars in an economy not even in recession says they are 100% in the wrong direction of mass market demands. If they even attend the CES I bet it's just for show. I doubt anything they demo will actually be released. It might be their Moth Eye technology but probably wont ever be intended for production. Maybe to show their value to a prospective buyer.
If Sharp would lower the MSRP price on these Elites, they would sell like crazy.
If they were smart, and there is a 2nd Gen Elite in 80" coming, the price should be what the 70" sells for now, and the 70" should go down to $5999 or less.
That would sell alot of TV's I would think.
Drop the price, sell more units, make smaller profits per unit, but, with many more units sold, bigger profits in the long run.

Good business sense to me.

You guys are making me re-think.

The 70" is $4500 at BB right now? Is this correct? How do you get this price?

I still think the majority of consumers wouldn't even spend more then $3000 at the most for a TV. I mean unlike most of us here who are hardcore A/V enthusiast. Who always in search for PQ, deepest blacks, high contrast ratio, etc. And pay top dollar for it.
But most of the masses really don't care about that. Don't even join A/V forums. Let alone they probably don't know these kinds of forums even exists. They just want the cheapest, biggest, wash out, and bright color kind of set and their happy. I mean look at the after Thanks Giving sale craze. You won't find most us there waiting in that long line because we know that the kind of sets we're after never goes up for a after Thanks Giving sale.
Like every time somebody that I know ask " how much you got the t/v for?" I tell em and they look shocked or think I'm crazy for spending that kind of money. Then I try to explain to them about the set. And I get a " they all look the same I see no difference." Then I get my set pro calibrated then one of my friends or family member say "nice set but why does it look kind of dim and the colors are not that bright?" rolleyes.gif.... See what I mean?

Read all the posts regarding the $4500 and you will discover that it had a small 1/2" crease in the panel and if anything happen to the TV under, around, pixels dead, the crease increasing, the warranty would be void from Sharp.

So, yesterday I cancelled the purchase.

Not a floor model. The panel had a 1/2" crease in it. Sharp told me: If anything happen to the TV under, around, pixels dead, the crease increasing, the warranty would be void from Sharp.

So, yesterday I cancelled the purchase.

Best Buy said they would warranty it if any one wanted it.

Best Buy told me they think one of the guys in the back shop did it to the TV

Just had a strange problem with my 70. Had it since July and when I went to power up the system with my Harmony remote the TV blue power led flashed a pattern of 2 long and 3 short flashes. I watched this for about 30 sec, no picture. Hit the power button on the TV remote and the set came on. Anyone experience this?

I have had that happen a few times since I got my 70X5 in September, 2011. Pushing the on button a second time has always fixed it.

Yes have had this issue and my case with Elite customer service is still open. We believe it is a negotiation issue with my cable box. Most times it happens when I shut off the tv in a different activity ie. using the bluray player. the flashing code you're seeing actually means a handshake issue. The only resolution that may fix the issue is delaying the command from my harmony to switch the input on the elite a little later than usual. I haven't tried it yet as I've only experienced the issue 2-3 times since purchasing back in october of 2011

Thanks for the quick reply guys. Makes me feel better.
Just an update on my refurb model. No issues and it works like a charm. smile.gif
post #11726 of 13284
If you search google for "2 long and 3 short flashes sharp" or something similar you'll find this issue across many sharp TV's not just the elite. All have said its a handshake code. I'm not worried about it anymore. I know it always happens when I the TV powers on and the input changes from HDMI1 to HDMI2 or some other source, I think the TV gets screwed up because at first it doesn't detect a signal from the source and panics. Like I said it's happened 2 times maybe 3 since purchasing. I've even tried to make it happen with sharp on the phone but I couldn't reproduce it. I wouldn't worry too much unless it happens every time you start up the elite.

Here is the response I got from support after I emailed them.

" Good morning,

Thanks for contacting Sharp Elite.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your inquiry.

2 & 3 blink code represent 3.3v power interruption/power failure. If the set is powering on you should be ok. I would wait to see if the problem reoccurs. It's possible you had a brown out in your area which caused the 2 & 3 blink pattern. Again, power interruptions of any kind can cause the blink code. Because the set powered back up it should be ok.

If power is lost completely, Please contact our Elite Advantage department we have Elite Advisors waiting to assist with arranging In-home repair/service. At which point the power supply board would need to be replaced.

3 & 3 blink code would mean the micro processor got hung up and then it reset itself, thus restoring power. The fix for the 3 & 3 is to unplug the set from the A/C outlet for 10 seconds and then reconnect to the power outlet. "
very interesting mgp. I don't have my discussion in writing as I was told the blink code meant handshake over the phone. This could very well be a power or loss of power issue because my city is known for power outages. My city has an on-going law suit against our electrical provider for this very reason, we lose power for brief moments very very often. Actually so frequent I would think I'd see the blinking codes more often.....hmmmmm

Elite 70" Replacement Unit #3
Folks, put Cnet settings in and you be the judge, with MovieTHX and CNET settings this is how this brand new 70" set looks. Pictures are attached but I really cannot say that I do not see a problem, I see it clearly, camera actually masked it a little. Please tell me how to mitigate it. These spots are indeed green and do show through on the white scenes.

Please take a careful look now and advise if you can. I would like to keep the set but ... how can I? $7K TV and this level of performance?

I don't see anything like this on my 70". I'm using the recommended settings someone posted on this thread (forgot author now).

My set was manufactured November 5th. You have a build date?
