Official Sharp Elite PRO-70X5 and 60X5 Owners Thread - Page 420

Hello all,

I'm new to this forum and have been following the threads intently. I'm really interested in the Sharp Elite 70'' and feel the need to 'act quick' as availability is dwindling.
I just got back from my local BB and they will sell me the 70'' floor model for $5400. The serial # is 108811824. What do you guys think of this offer and does this serial # belong to the dreaded November supply?

Thanks
Thats a great price
I would jump on that quick
That is a pre Nov 2012 build date serial number

It will have quite a few hours on them however when you think about the total life of the LEDs, it will hardly impact most users.

August 2011 build date, I think you could get a better price than $5400 for a floor model. Deal with the store manager only. A good price would be $5000 or less.

I paid 5700 for mine new. Sure it was a November build and an earlier build is preferable, but Best Buy doesn't know that. They only know they have a used TV with a lot of hours on it with someone willing to buy it. In one of the pricing forums here they show a PC Richards sale card for the price I got it for. Print it out and bring it up there and show them you can get a new one for 5700 and that they will have to come down more than that to sell a used tv.

Great price for a new one..if BB won't come lower on the floor model..get them to price match for a new Elite..Id rather do that than buy a tv that has been running 16 hours a day ,seven days a week since last year

Update on my replacement.. So BB delivered my replacement set which was the floor model i opt for instead of the new Nov. 2012 build they brought in. As I wrote earlier in this thread. When BB decided to bring in another new set. I told them before they deliver it to my place I wanted to test it their at BB. So when it came in they opened the box and set it up next to the floor model. Went into the settings of both set. Turned off any extra features including PS. Switched it to THX mode and ran the slides. On the new set they brought in the DSE was worse then the one I had at home. I mean we could actually see it on content we tested. Now on their floor model? #108812256. Ran the slides and WOW! Very nice uniformity. I told them I wanted the floor model instead. So they cleaned it and repacked it in the box.
After it got delivered, I set it up and updated to the new firmware. Guess it hadn't been updated becuase it's a earlier model. After that I used Kevin Millers setting of THX mode. And let me say this.. After having the Nov. 2012 build for a month and watching it everyday. This earlier model imo seems like it has better blacks, brightness, contrast, crispier, and more of a pop then my previous one. It reminds me of my Kuro Elite 151. Only bigger screen with deeper blacks and maybe a bit more clarity. Even my wife said it looks totally different and better. Now this is the WOW factor that I was trying to get from my previous one. Unlike the Nov.build set I had the side view past 45 degrees don't have that much change in PQ. Just finished watching 'Happy Feet" again with my kids. No more seeing that greenish blob on white. This display is awesome. Im very happy with this set.
Anyway if I get the chance tonite i'll set up my tripod and my DSLR and take some pictures with the slides on.

Glad it worked out. When working and setup properly, the Elite is an awesome set!

Maybe you guys can answer a couple questions for me.

How often are you guys seeing true black (or so close your eyes can't tell the difference) when watching blu-rays? I see it when I start up The Dark Knight and it shows the copyright screen with the blue bubble. It's so black I can't tell where the bezel is in a dark room. Once in the movie my "black bars" are just a very dark gray. I also see dark gray when the disk is loading and it shows the "floating" spinning disk. Are you guys seeing the same thing? I have to believe its the disk since I know the set can go darker, but I want to see it that dark when watching a movie too. I am using N3W8I3's settings ATM but I hope/think a professional calibration will get it that shade darker that I want.

Thoughts?...
Use a calibration disc to calibrate black level. If you don't have one, download the AVSHD 709 calibration disc for free here at AVSForum and use the pluge pattern to set the brightness. That will get you the blackest black for the set without crushing the black and sacrificing shadow detail.

You can also lower backlight to lower black level just a bit more but you will sacrifice overall contrast.
Blacks, contrast and backlight is the big dilemma biggrin.gif. I don't mind losing a bit of the top end to get a blacker black. - my backlight is at ISF 35, which I think comes out to about -5 in THX and other modes. My white level comes out at about 28 fL, which is fine for me to get the blacker black. But I'm in a dim room.

Had a question on calibrations of our sets. I read that everyone is doing the changes and calibrations in thx movie mode. What I wanted to know is has anyone done any other settings in any other mode like elite pure or movie mode. If so could you post your results so I could see them and try them out. Thanks.

I'm glad you got this worked out. There is nothing like a great looking picture where everything is working like its suppose to.

Has anyone with a November or newer manufacture date gotten one that looks right?

Not all November build sets have issues. I have a Nov. build date 70 inch from Magnolia Best Buy with no pink or green issues. As per BB, Elite has been discontinued and the new set supply is dwindling so jump on it before it is all gone. Elite is an amazing TV. Best Buy has also been discounting their floor models as open box - you can check these on the BB open box store links at Bestbuy.com.

came up with something. let me know what you think. is it possible that the nov 12 builds were a defective first batch or defective batch from middle of production run (more likely the first) that were set aside and then sold when they knew production was done, the assembly line was closed, and they had these sets sitting around? all it would take is putting them in new boxes with nov 12 build dates. i just dont see the end of the run being defective.

Grats on your new Elite and welcome to the Elite Club. wink.gif

PS: Welcome to the predicted KURO scenario everyone grab one while you can or pay top dollar for one later, assuming you can find one that is. cool.gif

Anyone know if it is possible to reorder the AV Mode list? Service menu maybe?

For example, change the default order of:

ELITE PURE
OPTIMUM
STANDARD
ETC...

to:

ISF DAY
ISF NIGHT
MOVIE THX
ETC....

Hugo is a great reference BD too. And Woman in Black has awesome dark scenes with great blacks and shadow detail - nice creep-a-thon without anybody getting eviscerated.

Good tip on the Best Buy Demo model. For those in the Bay Area (California) there is a 70" Elite at the Best Buy in Sunnyvale going for $5452:

I click the link and it goes to my local BestBuy in Kalamazoo Michigan. Using a iPad. A few days ago I believe it was the Ann Arbor store in Michigan had a open box 55" around 3700
post #12598 of 13287
Well I called them and the manager said they are willing to be flexible on the price. If I was truly interested I would head down there and ensure this set isn't plagued by some of the problems mentioned in this thread. I bet the right person could walk out with this for under $5K. However, my PRO-101FD works well (no red tint yet) and still produces a magical picture. Sure I would prefer a 70" instead of my 50" but I can wait till 4K+OLED (or will hell freeze over first). biggrin.gif I think this TV is a great deal for ~ $5K.

I tried to buy a 70" Elite at my local BB yesterday. I wanted to know what they wanted for the floor model - the salesman checked inventory and found Denver warehouse had 5 left from their last and final shipment (per the Sharp rep who was there last week) and he said he would not consider selling the floor model till the inventory was gone.

The pricing offered at BB for the new units was US$7K. I suspect that all the inventory was Nov builds - but he had no way to confirm that.

Sigh! now what to do???

I just don't like the picture of the Sony 950 TV as much as the Elite
