Exactly. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush ... or something like that. smile.gif

When I bought this TV, 6 weeks ago, no one said anything about the TV being discontinued. No that it is, the store manager wants to give me a TV that costs half the price and says that its comparable because it is a Sharp 70" LED TV (LC-70LE85U) which is less than half the price and in my opinion no where near the level of TV that the Elite is.

So I call GS warranty center and told them that what I wanted was a replacement, but in the last 6 weeks it has been discontinued and no longer available. I asked how l had to exchange it for new one and that I wanted to wait to see if the Elite line would come back with a next gen model to replace it. They said I had until the warranty expires, but the sooner the better.

Considering I got the 5 yr warranty, I have some time.

So anyone know if the Elite line is coming back ???

I would not wait if I were you. What did you pay for the Elite?

malbo1,
have you contacted Elite customer service and started and issue with them? I would.

The key question you have to answer is can you live with the defect or not. If not, then ask for a FULL refund. I would (in parallel) see if Elite can investigate a repair. A repair is a longshot. Especially inlight of what was reported here that Elite said they would give a refund for a defective IR sensor! They're not repairing anything it would seem.

I feel your pain. you did your research, bought the best, and its defective and you can't get another one. There is another possibility, now that you're arrived at your budget (and please share how much you paid), what about the 80inch 844? it's full array so uniformity should be good. but alas the black levels won't be as good. oh and it's a bit more money than you probably sent.

Best,
jeff

The original poster stated reason that Elite would not repair the sensor was that there was no authorized "ELITE" service center within a reasonable distance. My understanding is that they are repairing sets when there is someone close by.

farther back wasn't there a poster who had a bad IR sensor and Elite said the only option was to give a refund?

Because there was no authorized service center nearby. Then someone else advised him there were a number of Sharp service centers nearby. He was going to try that, and has not posted a follow up yet.

That was not Kdog's only option. I did suggest that he call the number I provided him and start a case with Sharp. His Elite can be serviced by an authorized Sharp repair tech. There were a number of Sharp service centers close to where he lives. The misinformation given to customers from "Elite" agents about refunding in lieu of repairing has been communicated to Sharp.

Speakerphone, don't know why it matters, but spent almost $6K on the set. It wasn't discontinued when I bought it.

I understand what others are saying about something you have verses a promise to come. For 90% of the material I watch, the spot is not noticeable. It's only on really bright or white scenes that it's noticeable. The color is not affected at all, just a dim spot. And I don't have to have another Elite, but something comparable would be nice. And projector setup isn't feasible as I'm currently in a rental with very little light control. With what I watch, I do need something with very good blacks. Makes all the difference as far as I'm concerned.

Sharp was contacted, but they would not cover it since it was an open box item. Maybe I'll see what the current year has to offer and go from there.

Sharp told you that they would not cover you under warranty because it was an open box sale? This sucks. I emailed Sharp Elite Warranty and they told me that open box sales are covered by the 2 year warranty. I'd hate to find out they were mistaken when I have a problem.

They told me that I had to go through BB warranty because it was open box. Maybe they were just trying to pass the buck and get someone else to cover it, but even a repair would be a full panel replacement, so it was a buyout situation.
Well, I hope you figure it out. Not covered because its s open box???? Can anyone confirm this is correct.?

It can make a difference when it comes to offering a replacement via the service plan. The replacement cannot exceed the value of the original model purchased. You may not need to use the service plan as a means for exchange though.

Regarding the factory warranty though, open box purchases are covered. I have no idea why they would have told you that. Unfortunate really, since I have generally heard great things about Elite warranty support.

Gwermpose, hose are battery operated aren't they? Just curious why you guys wouldnt want the rechargeable glasses? I got two of the elite recharable glasses yesterday for $44.00 each. They priced matched online for me.

The AN-3DG20-Bs are rechargeable. In fact, I'm pretty sure they are the exact same as the Elite glasses except they say "Sharp" on the side. My TV came with two pairs of the Elite glasses, and I can't tell a difference between the two. Here's a photo of each one (the Elite glasses on top) ...

They are exactly the same - I have 2 pair of the Elite specs and 2 pair of the 20-B series. The 20-B came with an instruction manual. The Elite glasses just came in a plain white box. Whoo hoo - post 700!

I can confirm this, as Sharp has told me directly. Logo is the only difference.

Hmmm, I wonder where I heard they were battery operated? I thought the b at the end meant battery as a pose to rechargeable. Hmm, we'll good deal then!

From what I figured out:

XYYZZZZZZ

X is a single digit, 1 means 2011, 2 means 2012, 3 means 2013

YY is the month of that year

ZZZZZZ is a random identifier

Thanks! That's very helpful information. My serial # begins with 108, so I guess that confirms my suspicion that it was one of the first Elites to hit stores.

Does anyone know if there are discrete codes available for the various AV modes?

I haven't come across any for IR, only via IP control.

Installing a tv mount on my 70" elite, can someone tell me if the back of this tv is considered a flat or curved back? It looks curved to me but also looks flat... I can't decide and don't want to put the wrong bolts on. Thanks

How concerning is DSE? Is this a common issue with the elite?

So im having the same issue with my 70" elite as "Boxpilot" in this thread (post # 2402 & 2418 )

http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/hdtv-video-displays-processors/48747-elitepro-60x5fd-pro-70x5fd-discussion-thread-241.html

Im not sure what to do , should I go the warranty route or return it? I'm still within my return window at best buy. I did get this tv at $4250 which is a good deal but now I see it has these issues.Being this unit is now discontinued I don't have the option to exchange it. So what do you guys suggest I do here?
