The only time I ever really notice DSE is when there is light background and the camera is panning. For example, it's very obvious when watching hockey.

Im not sure what to do , should I go the warranty route or return it? I'm still within my return window at best buy. I did get this tv at $4250 which is a good deal but now I see it has these issues.Being this unit is now discontinued I don't have the option to exchange it. So what do you guys suggest I do here?

Is it only a problem when you're looking for it, or does it appear during normal viewing as well? If it's only visible when you are closely scrutinizing solid color frames, then I wouldn't worry about it.
It's noticeable with normal viewing. More noticeable when panning on a light blue background. I ONLY notice it with normal viewing. I've tried to load color images on my flash drive but can't seem to find the right color to get a full idea of exactly how much DSE I really have.

Wingnut, why was your board replaced?

I have not been following this thread for a year or so, the Elites are history now? And are the the last ones made (the ones with the issues) the November one?

Flat, no spacer needed.

Hi everyone, I was hoping someone could help shed some light on a floor model PRO-70X5FD I considered purchasing. The serial number starts off: 204XXXXXX. From the information provided a little earlier in this thread I take it that this is possibly an April, 2012 build? Is anyone aware of any issues specific to this particular build date? I have only seen people mention (for the most part) Elites with a November 2012 build date as being problematic, although not always. The tv looks great in the store, but I was only able to watch the Planet Earth Blu-ray that they had playing on it so far so I don't really have much to go on yet beyond that. I hope to get someone at the store to show me more of a variety the next time I go back.

Any input or advice especially relating to the apparent April, 2012 build date would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I have not heard anyone mention any issues related to other specific months build dates. I have an August (208XXXX) 70" and it has been perfect. I have a hard time watching any other TV and I have 2 60" Sony's as well. What kind of price are they offering you for the floor model?

Regardless of the build date, next time you go, bring some content with you that you like. I'd strongly suggest having the store demo the 3D for you.

interesting

they told me at my local Magnolia that they were discontinued?

also...why the big difference in pricing on the east coast vs the midwest

The pricing some are getting on here is WAY below where it is in my market

They are basically discontinued. I was merely stating that Sharp has not "officially" discontinued them. Also, they are discontinued within Best Buy(MHT) systems.

Clearance pricing is based on two factors. Inventory levels, and the traffic each store sees. If a dealer has lots of traffic, they likely won't have to get very aggressive to move through their supply. Stores that see less traffic often take steeper discounts in order to take advantage of what customers they do receive. The more inventory they have the deeper they go. Since the east coast sees the highest amount of sales, they were likely left with a majority of the remaining inventory.

Thanks guys. I did go back and test a few Blu-rays I brought and while the picture looks really good (great really), I'm going to hold out to see how the shootout goes in May with the newer tvs. The price they were asking for the elite (upper 5K range) was a bit more than I care to pay for a used tv with over 4000 hrs on it. It truly is a great tv from what I was able to see however. I think I could be just as happy with one of the brand new 65" models that have recently come out, or are on their way to market, for much less money (which is why I think I'll wait to see how the new models do in the May shootout.) Really is a tough decision for me unfortunately. frown.gif

I agree that buying a display model kinda sucks but it still comes with a 2 yr warranty. As far as the 8500/ZT60, it's 5 whole inches smaller!! not much but 70" just sits better for me.. I got my Elite for $4250 and it has 9k hours on it, no biggy though because from what I hear they last 100k +. So it's a bit harder decision for me to hold out for the unknown in may being its about the same price, smaller in size and about the same in picture quality. Also, dont plasmas have issues with image retention? I had a hell of a time with image retention with my Samsung D6500 59" and it wasn't covered under warranty. The only down fall I have seen so far with my elite is DSE but this paragraph made me feel better.

"You should not obsess over screen uniformity, as most recent HDTVs will exhibit some form of uniformity-related problem. In practice there are few perfectly uniform displays, especially at larger screen sizes. The key issue is whether the problem is noticeable during normal viewing, and not just in artificial tests such as solid color slides which always highlight even the smallest uniformity issues. In general plasma beats LCD in terms of screen uniformity, as uniformity issues are inherent to LCD technology. On a plasma you have a greater chance of being able to return or replace the TV under warranty due to any uniformity issues, as these are not considered normal for plasma technology."

The new Panny ZT65 I think will be worth a serious look at this point.

Lets see how severe it appears.

Please post a full screen gray field.

As someone else posted, it's highly unlikely that anyone gets a truly perfect screen. The big question is how far off yours is.

There was a manager visiting the Best Buy store from one of the stand alone Magnolia stores located in Virginia (that's what he told me anyway) who said that the floor model Elite comes with a 1 year manufacturers warranty, although I could always purchase an extended one of course. He also told me his stand alone Magnolia store still had a few new in the box PRO-70X5FD in stock of which I could order from, but they are just way out of my price range. Yes, the extra 5" over a 65" tv is quite enticing, but for me personally, I don't think the cost benefit is there given a brand new 65" ZT60 is expected to retail around $1500 cheaper than the used Elite I was looking at. If they will come down in price on the Elite by another 20% or so (highly doubtful) I may reconsider, but they seemed pretty firm at this point in time which is understandable.

I think you may be right. I also thought the Samsung F8500 and Panasonic VT60 I saw in the store looked great as well which is why it is a tough choice for me to go with the used Elite. I think they are all great to be honest. For me it may just come down to cost benefit analysis rather than just screen size. I'll have a better idea in a couple weeks

Hello All,

We are proud new parents of a brand new bouncing baby Elite PRO-70x5FD. I had some questions regarding this set keeping settings. I have noticed that at times it will automatically switch from THX Movie mode to Dynamic (Fixed) seemingly on its own. Also one thing we noticed this weekend when watching a movie in 3D about an hour or so into it, it switched to 2D mode all by itself, but was flickering a tad prior. After that happened I went through all the settings and saw that the 3D Notify was set to on, and thought this may be a feature to help with eye strain. is this the case? I have since turned this feature off as well as Auto switch to 3D mode off, and set all my settings to CNET's settings. Listed Below is my setup, thank you all for your amazing input and support!

Elite PRO-70x5FD - Latest Firmware - Serial 219UXXXXXXX
Elite BDP-62FD - Latest Firmware
Elite SC-65 Receiver - Latest Firmware

Bear in mind that any remaining NIB stock is likely to be from the Nov. 2012 build.

What I did was go to the Elite website: elitelcdtv.com, click on the support tab along the top, and then go to the "email Elite support" option at the bottom-center of the page and basically just submitted an email stating the serial number of the Elite tv I was looking at and asked if they could tell me what the build date was. I received a reply about a day later confirming that in my case: 204XXXXXX was an April, 2012 build date.

I don't recall the serial number of the Elite that I was looking at (a PRO-70X5) having anything but numbers in it. There were no characters such as the "U" in yours, so I have no clue what that means but they could probably provide that info for you as well if you send them an email.

Man, now you have me wondering if I should return and wait. I got it fir $4250 but the end of my return window is coming up soon. I just dont know what to do, I mean it will be nice to have a brand new tv but that doesn't mean it won't have issues.

In no way am I suggesting you should return your tv. If you are happy with it I would keep it imo. If I was able to get the price you did on the floor model, I would probably go for it myself, however that isn't the case as of yet. The price is just way too high for me to be comfortable with all things considered. I may try again in a week if it is still available. Just do what you feel is best for your situation. The newer tvs (Samsung F8500, Pana VT/ZT models) are all great, but so is the Elite which is why I was considering buying the floor model in the first place. smile.gif

I've been out of town for a week and couldn't get back to Sharp on the issue till now. They are still pushing for me to return the set instead. They don't want to send a tech. But on a brighter note, the sensor is now working. Apparently it is an intermittent problem that will come and go until it goes out completely. I might just get my money back and get the Sony 950 before they are obsolete as well. I've seen 4K in person and was not impressed.

im seeing alot of complaints about the nov 2012 sets, i was wondering if just the nov 2012 sets are affected or is it all the sets that came out in 2012. i bought an elite online and it was a feb 2012 build date should i be fine ?

I Solved my discrete on/off problem

The early Elite's do not support a discrete PowerOn. I have tested with newer Elites and they work fine. Same firmware, so it must be a hardware problem. Here is my solution.

I built an IR to serial converter. I can read the IR from the remote and convert it to serial commands sent to the RS232 port. I know, I know. All that work just to get a discrete PowerOn. But it also has several extra advantages. The IR sensor is more sensitive than the built in one so I don't have to aim it anymore. Also, I can map any button on the remote to any serial command. For instance I've mapped the color buttons and the app favorites to discrete AV Modes. The red button selects Movie THX, the green button selects Movie, the blue button selects Elite Pure, etc. No more toggling through the modes to select the ones I want.smile.gif

Very clever. I would love to know more about how you went about building the IR to serial converter, as well as how you program it. I'm perfectly happy with the workaround I came up with for the discrete power on command, but I'd love to be able to access specific AV modes as well.

It all depends on how large of a set you can live with. In my case, I really wanted a 75-80" set, but I simply couldn't find one that I was happy with. I went with the 70" Elite because I ultimately decided that picture quality was more important than size. That being said, I really didn't want to go any smaller than 70". I knew when I bought the Elite that there was a possibility I would prefer the overall picture quality of the new plasmas coming out, but 65 inches just wasn't large enough.

I've now had the Elite for a little over two weeks, and I've grown to love it more and more each day. The picture it puts out is truly breathtaking, and to my surprise, I am actually finding my KURO's picture to be somewhat dim and lifeless by comparison.
