Hey can one of you guys check if you have this problem that effects the Sharp LE835u? The quickest way to check is to load up a menu and look at a horizontal line. If you see little "teeth", then you've got a pretty major image quality problem if you sit close to your TV, if not, its more of a minor thing, but i'd be pissed myself. If you do have it, I believe i have evidence that proves it can be solved via an update.

"We did find that the subpixel structure that Sharp uses on its LCD panels (or the way in which the subpixels are addressed) looked unusual at first. Almost every LCD HDTV we review has its red, green and blue sub-pixels arranged in vertical stripes on the panel. Sharp’s LCD panels appear to use a triangular arrangement (or something similar to it), which results in straight lines (and fine details) appearing a little bit zig-zagged if a very observant user sits very close to the screen. This does affect how fine details are perceived, and for this reason, we don’t recommend that anyone tries to use a Sharp LCD TV as a large computer monitor."
Source

If you do have it you should know that it completely obliterated the small details in my desktop background photos on an LE835u. This was tested comparing it to a Sony of the same size. It was also tested sitting a meter away, so its not as bad sitting farther way, but it will be worth contacting Sharp for to get a fix going for it as its not trivial in the slightest (if Elites have it of course).

I can't imagine trying to watch a tv from 3 feet. The closest I can comfortably watch the tv is 8 to 9 feet (and that's in 3D mode). I've played around with some of the AVIA disk test patterns and haven't seen any teeth on horizontal lines at normal viewing distances. I'm sure that if I get close enough the orbital electrons would become distracting.
Actually if you turn on Precision Color Plus it will make some pixel-based resolution patterns look weird, but that's becuse it's doing its thing. OTOH, it's meant to improve diagonal resolution, so normal viewing might be improved, or not - you be the judge ...

Oh c'mon, don't we need a new controversy? Isn't that what this all about?

The gyrations we go through to find issues, any issues.

Guys, I'm not sure I can hold off for a new set much longer. The elite2 is just not in my time table. I've been running on a sharp 46d62u for going on 6 years now and my tax return is burning a hole in my wallet.

Has anyone bought the 60 or 70 from either robert or chris, had it shipped to their home (out of state, I live in AR), needed to have sharp replace/repair it due to clouding or any other issues and ran into any warranty problems? I'm a little worried that I may get a bunk set, either chris or robert won't/can't replace it and sharp won't honor the warranty cause I had it shipped out of state. This is my only hang up on ordering a new 60.

Any insight would be GREATLY appreciated, thank you kindly.

Major image quality problem compared with 4:4:4 vs 4:2:0??

And if there is a next one, you'll be looking for the one after that within a week.

I haven't looked at the RGB+Y pattern, but I can tell you that my 70" Elite resolves more detail than I've ever known was possible in my Dish Network HD feed. I have absolutely no concern about resolution on the Elite - it is the best I have ever seen on any TV. Period.

Man, I really want one of these TV's, but the boss says no, LOL. Hopefully the price will start to come down. I'd like to get the 60". I have a plasma right now, tried other LCD's but I am sensitive to judder. Has anyone noticed judder on these TV's?

When I go to BB at look at the TV, they always have Lord Of The Rings playing, I'd like to see something else.

I am considering the 70" Elite. I currently own a 60" Kuro (9G) and although I still think it is a phenomenal display - the larger size and 3D make the Elite an attractive option.

My only concerns are the pulsing and cyan issues I have read about. Are the pulsing issues limited to certain displays - in other words a defect or is it inherent in all of the displays? Is it fixable?

I believe that I have read that they plan on releasing a firmware fix for the Cyan issue. Is there a projected release date for the Cyan fix? Sometimes companies say they will fix issues with new firmware and it just never happens.

My only other issue is how do I sell a Kuro without the original box? I have no idea how to ship it safely to a buyer.

I didn't buy from either, and I don't have any issues with my 70", but I don't see how the fact that you're going to have it shipped would cause warranty issues? I think you're safe there.

I would say so. I watched a Blu-ray movie on the LE835 and some SD content and i definitely noticed it. This problem would mean you have little hacksaw sized teeth running along every singe horizontal line or line formed by any color difference (which is all a line is obviously).

If you look on your TV, horizontal lines should be flat while looking from about 2 feet, it will be obvious if there are teeth.

Here is a photo I took at a store the other day of the LE835u using a phone.

Attachment 236390

I had the LE835u hooked up to my computer running Nvidia's 3D software. When i would enable 3D, and set the desktop resolution to 1080p/24 the problem went away and all the detail returned to my photos. Enabling 3D btw doesn't make the desktop 3D, it just gets the computer ready to display some 3D content. So the problem isn't the pixel structure itself, its the way it is processed.

Thus, if you have it, it should be able to be solved by an update.

Unfortunately I don't think we have a firm answer on either of those questions. Given the number of people that have had their sets replaced and had the problem persist, I'd say its inherent in all sets. Given that a flickering set was shipped to another person that didn't see the flickering, and the number of people that never see it, I'd say there are external triggers amplifying/triggering the problem.

They only recently claimed to be able to replicate the flickering problem, so I think we are a ways from a fix. My gut feel is that they can fix the problem however.

Sounds like they are having issues creating the cyan patch.

I got mine from Chris and have had nothing but great service from him. I haven't made any warranty claims on my Elite, so can't attest to what Sharp will do, other than people who have made warranty claims seem to have had very good response based on their postings.

I also got an LG 55LE8500 from Chris for which I did make a warranty panel replacement due to banding, and LG was very responsive, so I don't think you could go wrong with either Chris or Robert.

Hi akopperi,

I wouldn't worry about those issues. Even with the issues believe me this set is worth it. If they fix them great, if they don't I seriously doubt you'll be disappointed. Best of luck trying to sell your Kuro ... cause' your gonna' need it with this thing around

enjoy,
Tom

Try to arrange a local sale first. Then you wouldn't need a box.

If you need to ship it, there are specialty shippers that can arrange for such a thing. It won't be cheap to ship either way, adding an extra $100-200 for packaging ought not kill the deal.

You should have no problem selling it if it's in excellent condition and low mileage. I purchased the 60" recently from a dealer with only 4,600 hours. My 50" Kuro, also from Sept 2007 has 12,500 hrs., still a great display.

Sharp claims they are working on the issue and corresponding firmware update. The issue is inherent in all Elite displays currently, to varying degrees.

I also believe this to be true, however I also would like to add that I think that there are some folks who just don't notice the issue at all, and some to a lesser degree than others. I've seen this issue in both magnolia sets near me, and mine also has it. I also don't see them to be any more or less noticeable in the 3, I've compared. at one Magnolia location, the employee definitely saw it right away, but only after I had pointed it out, using the Dark Knight blu ray I brought with me, and at the other store, the employee said he could not see it, even tho it was clearly there.
Forgive me if this was posted earlier but what scene(s) from the Dark Knight trigger the pulsing issue for you?
I'm curious as to what scene as well. I'm planning to audition the TV again tomorrow and would like to see this flicker in person.
