Something to consider regarding OLED. What do most of us hear regarding the differences between OLED and more conventional screens? Super-saturated colors, right? Well, perhaps someone can enlighten me on this point. If we already have displays that conform to Rec709 (and I've never heard of under-saturation being a problem with today's technology), then how will OLED improve upon this? More saturated than Rec709 calls for? If so we're talking inaccurate color.

I'm not trying to be flip about this, but I'm not sure it's the slam dunk that many think it is. Every OLED screen I've seen (and I have on my Android phone) is actually over-saturated. Very pretty to look at, but not particularly accurate. So what am I missing?

OK, I'm jealous. Good luck Mark and let us know how you think it compares with the 60". Personally, from what I've seen, I think it's a bit better.

Besides, I've lived long enough with my 12 year old Sony 61" RPTV with its 4:3 aspect ratio form factor redface.gif. The picture would blur when first powered up (similar to the way theater 3d movies look with out the glasses) until it "warmed up". My brother would tease me saying that I should try wearing 3d glasses with the old TV. In other words, I expect to be blown away.

The current Elite will stay King for quite some time no worries I was talking about a-ways down the road, and even then our Elite will still continue to shine above many other displays out there for quite some time to come and continue to be the envy of many. Even after I upgrade though way down the road, I plan on keeping my Elite as a reference display. wink.gif

Very true my friend they have many issues to resolve before it can take the place as King. But I was talking a-ways down the road and assuming that they can even fix many of the issues plaguing OLED technology like longevity and color issues. Upon further reflection perhaps going 4k Rez only for now on the next Elite is the key, OLED needs more time to ripen as it stands. cool.gif

Big Grats! When you get it please tell us what you think and if you notice any difference (Visually) in the Deep Inky Black levels compared to the 60''. The 70'' does have a staggering amount of Local-Dimming Zones, god I love my 70'' Elite! wink.gif

I think I have an idea for a signature for you: Check it out!

"Elite TV's - How we Know there is a God" smile.gif

I gotta say, the more I watch it (at work), the more I appreciate the picture.

My current TV is a 15+ year old Pioneer Elite RPTV (CRT) 55" 4:3....

I have been sitting on the sidelines a long time... ;-)

as far as i know there will not be any 4K content for the forseeable future. I would guess a minimum 5 years before it becomes as prevalent as todays HD content. So making a tv now with 4k abilities doesnt make it future proof because after 5 years there should be many other advancements in tv tech tbat the set would not have. imo

Hi all, just checking back in here, and am enjoying my new vt50, but I will definitely keep my eye out for next years Elite models, and if they can match the color accuracy of my current set, then I may consider a quick upgrade.smile.gif I am crossing my fingers for an 80 inch.

If you get an Elite, have your cardiologist in attendance during the first few days of use.

Yikes a long time to wait. I would just get rid of the tv altogether and never look back. What were you watching on that set for so long?smile.gif

King is pretty singular and definitely not agreed upon by all.. It might be best to say that it will remain one of the top sets. smile.gif

Perhaps he meant king as in monarch but far from king as in lion. smile.gif.

Those were some of the finest sets in their days and actually when cleaned and calibrated still put out a pretty nice picture. It's amazing what cleaning the optics does to one of those. Good luck in your search for a replacement.
I've posted a couple of ISF calibration files in the ControlCAL forum which you can download to your Elite using ControlCAL, or view them in your browser:

got the 70 mounted and working

I used the calibration settings from my 60 to start: still need to spend some time on calibration as those settings do not seem as good on the 70

Black levels are still there smile.gif

One change I made was to mount the 70 about 10 inches higher than the 60: I am having trouble getting used to the display height and may drop it back down a bit

Got everything working including IP and RS232 control

question: I recall the Kuro had an IP GUI screen you could access from a PC: I assume the Eltie does not have this?

one thing immediately obvious is a much more immersive viewing experience over the 60 so in that regard I am very pleased
post #9648 of 13287
Not sure about that GUI screen Mark, but I thought there was a way to access certain functions from a PC.

Speaking of immersive, this morning's USA Today mentions a 90", full array LED display from Sharp, that will ship to a limited number of dealers. Pricing is about $11,000.

I know the feeling. I am in the process of upgrading from my 12 year old 4:3 61" Sony RPTV. The the Elite! No more greenish blacks and blurred content.

BTW, took a trip to VE yesterday to check on the TV. Even though I've seen the 70" on display plenty of times, there is something special about seeing your own brand new set. It is a January build date and is currently being broken in with the color slides. It should be by next friday if Keven Miller isn't too busy for the holiday. I can't wait!!!

In the mean time, I have a brand new BDI Novia cabinet and Arena mount in the living room and also ordered a Furman Elite 20PFi and two extra glasses from VE. Robert is a stand up guy and even threw in some extra goodies including a brand new copy of Avatar 3D blu-ray.cool.gif

An Oppo bdp-93, Blue Jeans HDMI cables and LED accent lighting is also in route next week.

More pics at the store HERE.

That info/price tag doesn't look so big with the full view.

There are some control command specs for a PC in a spreadsheet on the Elite website, but no GUI to send them. As far as settings goes, the only way I know of to set them from a PC is ControlCAL for the ISF modes.

I have IP and RS232 communications working with RTI remote

I recall now there is no Sharp IP GUI: ghosts of my old Kuro tongue.gif

any info on what the 2nd gen Elite's will bring to the table?...even if the cost is crazy high or not enough of a jump in IQ at the very least it will knock the current Elite's down in price

I've had my elite 70 inch for about a week now and its more or less tuned to the way I like it. This is the only tv I've had that is enjoyable to watch commercials, the picture on this thing is jaw dropping!! Befor this set I've had the Panasonic vt25, vt30 and the sony hx800. I was in between this set and the vt50, I know the vt50 will have better motion and color but the blacks and the crazy bright whites give this set the punch I've always wanted in a set. I
Think I'll be sticking with the elite.

No official word but I think the consensus is they are going to shoot for cheaper instead of big quality improvements. The quality is almost perfect as it is. Of course they could also go 4k but that might be a mistake cause there won't be much support for it for several years minimum. I mean, look at 3d. Every television sold now has 3d yet there are only a few movies titles out and no 3d programing that I'm aware of.
btw can someone give me the length and width of stand for the 70 inch?

You bring up a great point, what do we want to watch, a display that measures more accurately or a display that is more pleasing to look at.

Hopefully the 2nd gen Elite will do both. I'd also like to see 4K added.
