After 90 days you will pay to ship a problematic unit back to them. That's about $175 or more in shipping.

Cool. I appreciate the info!

Alright, I had Jeff Meier of Accu Cal go through my setup this morning. He was unable to complete the video side because of white clipping.

Specifically, he said:

"Clipped all information above 90 percent signal level. This was below 234 data level. This distorted the gamma curve and happened no matter the settings on the projector."

Jeff recommended I get a replacement. I haven't seen any mentions of this in the thread. THOUGHTS???

This is certainly not true with mine.

All 4 of my units did not have that issue. I could not see above 252 or 253 I think , but thats OK with me. With auto iris on it didnt clip below that no matter what I did. With iris off, I have to set contrast to 89 to see up to 252 or 253, so that is where I set it all the time.

Are we talking about the greyscale ramp? Mine does not crush...

Ok, sounds like its just me then. I'll call the dealer on Monday. Thanks.

No change if you drop your contrast down a few?

Unfortunately No...

I set Contrast at 90 since I think I detect a slight pink tinge if it's set all the way to 100. But there is absolutely no clipping with it set all the way to the max.

Howdy,

I read an article recently about some problems with recent digital cinema screenings of Casablanca. Apparently some of the big SXRD cinema projectors were having problems where one side of the screen had a reddish tinge, while the other was greenish. Obviously pretty hard to miss on a black and white film.

This evening, I attended an event at a local dealer, and one of the displays was a JVC X70. I brought my Blu-ray disc of Casablanca, and I had an opportunity to play it on the X70. We immediately noticed that the upper right corner of the image had a purplish tint to it. It was pretty apparent. When we put some color content back on, it wasn't so obvious, but in scenes with blue sky, you could see the tinge.

Has anybody else seen a problem like this on the 1000ES? I know there ahs been a problem with a horizontal streak for some people, which I gather is something Sony is working on. Other than that, has anybody noticed issues with uniformity on black and white content?

Did you try with auto iris off? My 4 didn't clip with it on. Easy to get it to clip with contrast above 89 with it off.

The 790 at 249 msrp is the best bang for the buck player available.

Mark have you seen one? I have had probably 30 or more Blu ray players since the formats birth and I call them like I SEE them.

My post was to be funny. No. I haven't seen one yet. I have no doubt its good.

I get that.

I have taken a lot of Flack for liking this player a lot. I still stand by it. Being able to use Sony's image adjustments and set them up separately for 2D and 3D has really proved beneficial. New owners are popping up pretty routinely confirming my findings. It is amazing what just 249 MSRP can get you in 2012.

OK, have just tried it with auto iris 'off', using the S&M Contrast pattern: I can see the 235 bar with Cst up to ~ 98; with it at 95 I can see ~242; and with it at 90 I can see up to ~ 248. I alternate with having it at 90 to 95. And with auto iris 'on' I see all the Cst bars with it all the way up to 100.

Well, mine definitely clips no matter the iris or settings. You guys think I should get a replacement? Picture seems awesome to me, but maybe I'm missing something....

It certainly seems that something is not right. Do you use 'Reference' present?

If you are clipping no matter what setting, I would get a replacement.

No, modified cinema and tv. I switched through all the presets with the grayscale pattern though.

I'm glad to see its not an issue for other people. My next one should be good then.

T0m Huffman (creator of ChromaPure) had the opportunity of playing with my 1000ES before I picked it up, and he concluded that Reference preset gave the most accurate PQ; of course if you calibrate with ChromaPure, or some other software, then the final result shouldn't matter what you start with. He also recommended that Contrast by set no higher than 90.

Mook - Did you try bypassing your processor and connecting the Oppo directly to the projector and then run the greyscale pattern?

Saw Avengers today. Cannot wait to see it on the 1000ES! Fan-freakin-tastic movie!!!

I have the same feeling! In fact, all I could think was, "man, I cannot wait to watch this at home." To be fair, a lot of that had to do with the kid that was sneezing on me and kicking my seat... But still...

Am I the only one that was disappointed it was filmed in 1.85 though?

Finally got my AVS 709 disc to burn and went to work tonight.

On the white clipping pattern, I can see flashing bars all the way up to 250.

On the grayscale steps I can clearly see all the borders to the highest white. This was the chart that previously had issues....granted different source.

Does this sound like clipping? Seems like its working as it should be. Maybe Jeff's laptop pattern had an issue...I've got advanced iris off, contrast at 88 and brightness at 53.

Sounds like your good. Is this bypassing the processor?

Well I started drywall demolition of my current room last night, so my 1000 will be packed up for a little while as I try to get this new Erskine theater created as quickly as possible, while also on a DIY type budget for the construction. So I will be doing as much of the non skilled work as I can and have a contractor buddy come in for the rest.

SO many things to do and consider. I think there are less steps and issues in building a whole house than there are in one specialty theater room!

Hopefully I will have the room done in time for that Avengers Blu Ray release!

Dennis also designed my theater, which is dangerously close to being done. There are a lot of steps. The rest of my addition is done, and I the contractors moan each step of the theater way.

I'm hoping it will be rolling by the end of May. During the process, I couldn't resist firing the 1000ES up and projecting it on a painted wall using a nice DIY screen paint. I was surprised at how well it looked on that paint. Can't wait to see it with a little gain on an ST130. Good luck with the project.

Looks like end of May/early June for me as well.
