Weird colors? On which projectors? Reviews I've read of the Sim2 have said that it can be calibrated to real excellence.

Me too! It was a nice split second to have had. Then the thinking part of my brain caught up with the emotional part of my brain.

Let's hope that PQ is really as good as the specs suggest. A high lumen very high contrast projector is a first! A don't care about 4K but it is clearly not a bad thing to have.

Plus, it looks cool. It is probably the coolest looking projector that I have seen. That doesn't mean much but Sony clearly took the time to design a sweet looking case.

No mention but does it do 3D? I know this is not always wanted and could add $100 to the cost but....

From the press release;

They mention new 4k panels and Iris3. If the 1,000,000:1 spec is based on Sony's traditional ~4x multiplier this could be something special with ~250K:1 native!

My jaded side says someone in marketing may have had a little too much "positive energy"

Well, 1mill:1 is such a nice round number that I'd guess they probably rounded up the Iris3 factor a bit to reach that number. However, it's quite possible that Sony has made extra big (physically) panels for 4K. After all the projectors cost so much that the extra price for big panels wouldn't hurt so much. Maybe that allowed them to improve native contrast a lot? Don't know, just hoping, I guess...

If it's at that kind of price, I was hoping to see this.

You can't help but wonder if projector manufacturers are intentionally holding back LED/Laser light sources (or keeping costs high) intentionally to keep consumers either buying bulbs, or upgrading their projector every few years.

Most people I know, including myself, upgrade their projector when the bulb dies rather than put a new bulb in. With a light source that can potentially last 20x longer than a bulb, I'd have a lot less incentive to upgrade once I have a projector I'm happy with. LED/Laser light sources also bring the potential for modulating the light output and eliminating the need for a dynamic iris.

Except the high lumens I don't see any added value for an average consumer at $30k level. Strip out the whole soon to be outdated future technology this projector will be at par with under 7k line. I am one of those who heavily invested on the short lived laser disc technology of early 90s and later HD tv "raedy" tech.
For that money I would go after Sims or DPI projectors which can deliver no nonsense good quality image.

Haha, yep. Guess I'm gonna have to start believing in Santa Claus again... Sony has proved in the past that if they throw enough money at it (Blu-ray) they can make anything succeed, maybe they'll do this with 4K content...we can hope. Makes me wonder if TI will fire up the old R&D dept. and come out with new single chip 4K DLP...now THAT should be sharp!

If Sony annually halves the price I could pick on of these up in 5, guess I won't put off that upgrade after all.

I hope to see a better demo later of how well this projector can really perform in a bat cave environment (but I don't know if that will be possible here at CEDIA or not).

As stated in previous posts, there was no mention of price, but it was emphasised several times during the presentation that this is the first consumer 4K projector (thus one would expect pricing to be consumer oriented and not a $100K commercial product). I'm certain quite a few of us here on AVS will be asking Sony representatives tomorrow about price. Perhaps they are holding off a little to set the final retail pricing until they have an opportunity to see what JVC will announce. I suspect the above speculated $30K price point may not be too far off the mark.

Hopefully is is at same level as the other´s ( 20 - 22 db ) and I will be happy

We will order one for display. If anyone wants to see it in action in the Florida area you are welcome to visit. I am also looking into picking up their D cinema 4k. Would make for a fun comparison.

Assuming the PS4 (whenever that happens) will be capable of 4k, gaming will be something to behold. That might also be the only source of content.

Price will be sub-$25K. They won't say native CR. UHP based. Remember the while selling point of this is bigger screens. Can't do 200" screens with LED. Demo on the floor has some obvious content issues with their setup so I wouldn't base ANYTHING on it.

If it's under $25k, 2000 lumens, around 20k:1 on/off and if (and that's a big if) they bumped ANSI CR to >500:1 (wishing for around 700:1), then they have a winner. If in addition they supply 4k Content for the home, I'd be tempted if they deliver the above numbers.

Short lived? Laserdisc was around for 20 years and that's what you call short lived? How long does a format have to stick around for you, so it's not short lived? DVD was short lived as well and so will Blu-Ray be.

And how do you know the Sony won't deliver the same? I'm a big fan of DPI, the Sims can be good if one is lucky enough to get one without issues or convergence errors (had to go through several Lumis' before I found one to have acceptable convergence and the Mico 50 had crazy CA and something wasn't right with the lens, second one was ok tho). Let's wait and see how it performs, then come to a conclusion.

Now I am hopefully to see that in 2-3 years time, I will see the lower end having all this with a price tag of $4999... Yeah!
To make 4K content successful, they need to bring the price down anyway. 1080P does not really become successful until it become more or less mass-market. The problem with 4K material is that unless you have a pretty big screen (more than 80-90), the difference compare to 1080p in a normal viewing distance is not that much...
So, I am not that hopeful 4K content will become a reality.. although I very much want it to be, as I have a medium screen (120 inch..)

To anyone here thats seen one in person is the difference between 1080p and 4k that big of a deal? As much of a jump as 480p to 1080p?

We are really excited about this projector. We have already ordered one for display, couple that with the upcoming 95 and the current 30, Sony has a pretty nice line of projectors this year.

Wasn't this year supposed to be the off year where projectors got minor enhancements to last year's 1st gen 3D and next year would be the big leap ahead? Apparently no one got the memo.

I dont see, why they shouldnt provide at LEST a 20K:1 native with it ( new and bigger panels = 0,74" ) , they allready did that with the 90ES ( and Im sure with the 95ES too ) and this is going to be their flagship ! ( so I cant really believe, its not going to beat the little brothers in allmost every aspect )

BTW. that lens looks very good ( a 2.1 motorized zoom )
