Sony VPL-vw1000 - Page 102

My new one is an ES1. Sony has not publicized anything about revisions and generally running minor changes are not announced in the projector industry.

The one I had on loan from Sony would have been a keeper for me if it wasn't a loaner I did work on. But Sony engineering wanted to examine it. So they sent me a new one which I paid for. The previous banding while not that severe is ameliorated on the new one.

Joerod. If your unit is older than 90 days, it is not eligible for exchange but only repair under warranty. Rest assured that if there is new software or minor changes, I suspect Sony will do it as part of the repair process.

I am a qualified engineer and I would not attempt an optical repair or cleaning. That's for the experts in Laredo. You have other projectors you can use while its gone I suspect. If you need it over the next two weeks, send it in after that. You will survive. I promise. smile.gif

Thank guys. You are definitely right. I won't tinker with it. I will wait until the following week (after week 1) and just send it in. Maybe by then the dust blob will have fallen off. If not at least it should have updated software. To bad they don't allow us to update them in the field. Anyway, enough surgery. smile.gif

Mark, has anyone from Sony said anything about dust issues with a few of these projectors? Have you had any dust problems with the loaner you were using?

I'm coming from a history of nothing but Epsons, and hearing the word "dust" in the same sentence as "projector" is enough to give me nightmares! I must have gone through at least 10 of those things-- they literally could not send me a unit without significant dust issues. So, as you can imagine, I'm a little gun-shy!

No. I need to determine the software version in my new unit. I do not know for a fact that the software has been updated from some given point in time. One needs to determine what version they have and I need to see if my version is different. For all I know its the same. I will look later.

OK. I have looked at the various software versions or whatever as listed on the info screen when in the service menu. You need to enter the service menu with the machine on but the menu closed. How to get in is all over the net. Enter, Enter, Left Arrow, Enter and say yes when it asks you if you want to enter the service menu. Same to exit from it. Once you enter, hit menu and things look almost the same but there is a new bar called device on the bottom. But you don't have to go there.Jjust go down to the info screen and low and behold it is different than the non service info screen. Close the menu and exit the service menu when done. Enter, Enter, Left Arrow, Enter, Yes I want to exit and go back to the regular menu. OK

Thanks Mark. There are definitely some differences in my version than your new one. Maybe there is an upside to sending it in. smile.gif

I would check your receipt and make sure that you are past the 90 day period. If you are not, then Sony will send you a replacement and you are not without a projector. if over the 90 days, then send in at your leisure.

Serial # is 1100059, No.12.     Where does one find the ROM's?

See my post 3036.The ROM versions are listed in the service menu info screen.

One thing they have fixed in newer revisions is IP control. I decided it was not worth sending in or getting a 2nd replacement over that and am controlling through Control4 with RS232, seems to work perfectly.

Watched The Avengers 3D last night! eek.gif

It had terrific 3D the entire way. The 2D version also looks stellar. The soundtrack is first rate. Especially when Ironman is flying. Same for the 3D! This movie is taking over my number one demo spot. Sorry Avatar 3D... If you own the 1000ES (or any display for that matter) then this is "THE" reference title which is a must have. smile.gif

That movie was the best 3D movie I seen. I watched the last fighting screen 3 times already, its destruction and mayhem for an entire hour straight. Finally got a Darbee Vision and it made the movie look even better. I bet it looked amazing in 2D on your Sony

Wow, What size screen, AT or non AT, throw, how bright of an image do you want? There are way too many unkowns with that question. I had my "knowns" set but still took Mike (AVS rep) quite some time before I found the perfect match for my needs. There are quite a few great screens from many companies that serve different needs.

Also, specifics about the room help narrow down a screen... How much light are we talking about?

I will post the name for the black frame insertion control later. It is under the motion settings. I leave the motion stuff off.;

There are so many variables with Darbee and VPL-VW1000ES controls. We need a recommended settings sticky or thread. Mark, I had mine set the way that I thought you had yours with RC 7 and filter 40. I adjusted back to min and 30. Picture is even better, it really looks great now.

The screen is 120" diag and about 26' from the front of the projector. The screen should not be an AT screen. The ceiling is approx 9' and one wall perpendicular to the screen has small windows near the ceiling (hence the light control issue). There are shades on the windows but they can be a pain to close. The room is a multipurpose media room with neutral color paint, a white ceiling, and wood floors.

Hey Joerod, how was your out-of-box convergence on the new projector? I just fired up my replacement and the convergence is WAY off. I did a quick and dirty panel alignment, but when I start the projector, it takes a while to "warm up" for lack of a better term. So, when I turn it on, the convergence is off, but after a few minutes, it seems to shift itself into alignment. Really weird!

I think I'm gonna have to contact Sony again-- oh well. At least they make it painless.

Doing Panel Alignment mine was the best of the three 1000s I've had. Seriously, it was spot on. I didn't spend much time doing anything else since the Cowboys and Giants were starting and I have family over. They got here early and watched The Avengers 3D. It has been a great opening night for my new 1000 (and the Cowboys). smile.gif
