Holy crap! That's probably the worst case of dust blobs I've ever seen! There is definitely something fundamentally wrong with your unit. That is 100% unacceptable, especially at this price point.

With my Epson 3LCD projectors, I'd have, at max, two or three dust blobs. And that was on a series of projectors that have become notorious for their dust problems. This is beyond reasonable.

I refuse to believe that wasn't some kind of major flaw, inherent in your unit-- like a blown seal or something. I'm sure Sony won't argue with a replacement, especially with that evidence!

Right?!?! Thank you. So I'm not exaggerating this in my head!!

I called Sony a few weeks ago, JoeRod gave me the number, and the guy said there was nothing they could do, and dust isn't covered in the Warranty. Maybe I didn't explain it right. So, I'm going through my dealer but they're not moving too fast. I'm gonna light a fire, and send them some pictures....maybe they don't understand and the pix will help.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Yeah man, definitely not an exaggeration. Just from the first picture you posted, I counted over fifty dust blobs (crank the brightness on your screen a little-- they're everywhere!). I can't imagine that's "standard" or "within spec" in any way, shape, or form. It looks like someone dumped a full dust pan on the panel. Just out of curiosity, how many hours do you have on that unit?

When I called to get my first replacement after I found three different issues with my original unit, the guy I spoke with (at the same ES number you called) was pretty rude and unhelpful. He suggested a number of "troubleshooting" steps that I already tried, and when politely I told him that, he told me to "do them again." When I explained to him (again, very nicely) that it would be a waste of my time and his and that I was within my 90 day return window, he grumbled a bit, made some rude comments, and set up the replacement.

The second time I called, the guy was extremely helpful, courteous, and apologetic. I think a lot of it has to do with who you speak to.

That's such a significant issue, it's almost impossible to believe it's not covered. I mean, really, how are you supposed to watch anything with that? Any reasonably dark movie will be completely ruined. If you can't get the response you want, I'd suggest trying the social media route (Facebook and Twitter). A few months ago, I was at my wits end trying to get a code for PlayMemories 4K-- no one I spoke to knew anything about it. I finally reached out to them on Twitter and got the code within two weeks.

Good luck!

Thanks Brian. This is probably veering too off topic for most, so I apologize.

I have 1,000 hours on it, but those showed up about 400...and have gotten worse since then. The pics I have are pretty clear so I'm going to do my best to get a replacement.

This was also the unit that Jeff Meir said was clipping whites...should have tipped me off....but it's so much better than my last one I kind of blew it off....

The second pic looks more like mine did. The first is unbelievable! eek.gif Mine was never that green either. Makes me wonder if it is something else? I know football season is important but I think it needs to go in ASAP!

i came to the same conclusion JoeRod. And thanks Brian for the motivation.

I sent emails to my dealer and Sony. Left some voicemails. Used Facebook and Twitter. Contacted someone locally through LinkedIn (since I believe Sony has a HQ here in San Diego). Even contacted a friend of a friend who worked in Sony's legal department.

While I was curious and waiting to see who would respond, I got a PM through AVS from Amy at Sony. I believe she's a product manager of some sort of their projectors. She is actually the lady in the screen innovations video with the 1000es that was posted on here way back when. Long story short, she was awesome and is helping me exchange it. How cool is that that Sony is checking out this forum? I was impressed. Further, I was contacted by the guy I found on LinkedIn also, who after I told I was working with Amy said "you got a message from THE lady in charge of the ES projector product segment".

Her office is 5 mins from my house.

Soooo, we're on the right path, thanks again for the encouraging words!

Amy is indeed the product manager for the Sony ES video line. She has been a friend of mine for many years and I ama big fan of hers. She just got married and is young, very pretty, very bright and energetic. She does monitor these threads but doesn't post, I suspect that Sony doesn't want its employees to post. She always does the right thing. Sony is very lucky to have her.

What a fantastic story. This is the reason I hope Sony does better as a company despite their recent financial issues. They seem like a company that wants to build quality products and support their customers. It's the same reason I always recommend them as a company and it's also the same reason I hope to own one of these projectors one day. As soon as my Marantz projector dies, this Sony will be at the top of my list.

That's excellent news! I've been very impressed with Sony and their customer service. I'm glad you were taken care of!

That is impressive and makes me feel even better to own this product knowing they take of their customers that make this kind of investment.

Mookie

Sounds good and a very impressive and smart move from Sony/ Amy - that is better PR then any advertising - thumbs up for Amy / Sony for that fine service !

Hopfully you are up and running soon again, and without small green ( men´s biggrin.gif ) "blobs"

Now if Sony would listen to us and loan us the 4k player too. We are now all going to run to RED. Bad marketing/PR move if you ask me...
BTW- Sony talks about a Concierge service for 4k panel owners... anyone know what that is?
Loaning servers is very expensive .and the inter Sony politics between thge profitable software side and the money seive hardware side is intense I would suspect. there must have been some very serious arm twisting for the software side to give up some for loading into the severs which I suspect were desperately needed to ggose 4K panel sales. the 4K projector marget is trivial and making loaner servers I susapect would have little impact on that market. Re the Red server, so what. Would the Sony loaner servers provide US with enopugh content? One will need additional sources of 4K content anyway until a non server optical type 4K player and content discs become available anyway. And then it will be like DVD days except with a very very small customer base for getting 4K releases on disc

Sony made absolutely the best business decision by not throwing money away and using political capital to loan under 1000 ES 10000 owneres servers and content. we will have at least something in thenear future anyway...
I think you are off base Mark. We tare alking about Sony underwriting <$500 in hardware plus the content for a few hundred people. I think Sony is being short sighted and they sure aren't buying any good will with their customer base who shelled out a lot of money. The purchase of mine was within a few weeks of the announcement and its rediculous they aren't providing the server. I even considered returning it after I heard the announcement and buying something else.

This would be forgiven, though,  if Sony brings out a 4K BD player at CES and makes a good supply of material available in this format.

I have it from a highly trusted Sony source that a solution for 1000ES owners and others for that matter is coming. I don't know what it is. The server loaner I have no idea what it costs but Sony is not exactly rolling in profitsability right now and the server and content was necessary to sell the 4K panel. It is not necessary to sell 4K projectors, a much smaller market than 4K panels. CES is only about a month away and we should hear more than.

nothing much will happen at CES, it will be a vey little new HT news event and perhaps Sony will make some noise with a $K source and player. But I think that may be a bit more in the future. Just suck it up for a bit and enjoy your upscaled content displayed without any serious projector rival. content and a means of playback is coming.

I sure hope that Sony continues to do right by 1000es owners with the dust blob issue. Given the severity of that particular issue and how badly it affects the image, it should be an issue that Sony agrees to keep the advanced exchange window open throughout the warranty of the PJ for. Its not something the end user can control, and with a supposedly sealed light path, not something that should be happening. That would keep my faith in Sony.

I hope so as well. With any luck, it's an issue that Sony has already corrected. I haven't seen any recent reports of dust blobs on newly-replaced units, so maybe that's a good sign. There were quite a few early on, but not so many recently. The picture that mookie posted (with 50+ dust blobs) points, in my mind at least, to a hardware failure of some sort. There are non-sealed light path projectors (Epson, Panasonic) that haven't seen issues that severe after years and years of use. In fact, I think that's the worst case of dust blobs I've ever seen-- at this price point, with a sealed light path, there is definitely something wrong. But let's give Sony the benefit of the doubt. I'm sure they're aware of the prevalence of the issue because they read this thread.

Just an update to my situation....I'm the dust blob guy, and had a few other things that weren't right on my 1000. I talked to Sony on Monday, setup the exchange, and the projector was at my house yesterday. That's pretty fast from Florida to Southern California! Took the old one down, set the new one up, and everything appears to be fixed and excellent on this one. Sony did an outstanding job taking care of me in this situation and I'm thankful for that.

Funny side note.....I thought the new projector was super loud in the fan noise department, thinking oh great, here we go again...then remembered the cooling setting, and now its super quiet!

So, all in all, I'm happy and excited to get back to watching movies!

Good to hear Sony is so responsive.

After many months of monitoring this forum, I finally had my 1000 installed last week. Fantastic picture I think. I liked my Runco but this is impressive. I was worried about brightness, but not a problem at all. And it looks great on my Screen Research .95 gain 103' screen.

Reading about the blob issue concerned me, but glad it is resolved for you.

I watched my favorite film of all time a few nights ago, Lawrence of Arabia. It was the clearest, most vibrant I have seen it since I first saw it as a 12 year old kid at Hollywood Blvd theater. It made me happy about my purchase.
That's awesome Mook! Now you need to check out roomieremote if you have an Ipad. I've been controlling the projector via IP from my ipad. Awesome app and works great with the 1000 and all my other HT gear.

Great Mookie! Sorry, but I forgot if you said, were you outside the 90 day window? Would be nice to know Sony is taking care of customers with issues that bad even after that window is up.

I noticed on Ebay that A bare Philips lamp is available to replace the failed one using your housing.
Has anyone tried one of these replacement lamps?
The one that they show on Ebay is a generic lamp, but the seller will upgrade to a Philips lamp for about $15 more.
If it is an easy thing to do, that is quite a savings over buying the complete lamp module. (The savings would be around $400)
I bought a replacement bulb for my VW200 witch saved me around $500 over buying the complete unit.
