The Raid

"Best action movie I've seen in years".

Sony Pictures acquired the film during the Cannes Film Festival after only seeing a few bits of footage. Deadline just reported that Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda has been hired to create a new musical score for a film...

Directed by Gareth Evans.

Also if I'm not mistaken it stars the breakout lead from the film 'Merantau'.

I hate it when they do that. By the time it hits theatres here it; it will most likely be on DVD and BD in Asia already. I'll watch that instead. The action in Merantau was okay but the story itself kind of sucked.

Its from the director of Merantau. Its a non stop, unapologetic action flick.

Surprised there isn't a bunch of interest in this yet, looks like fun.

Here is the U.S. theatrical release trailer, also note that the title has changed purportedly because this is now going to be the first of 3 films.

anyone know of the planned dvd/blu ray from studio internationally? I assume we'll see an international release before the US home market.

It's being released in us theaters this 3/23 so BD/dvd should soon follow. For most action junkies this is heaven but according to some who have seen it at toronto film festival the film lacks plot/story and character development. I'll see it when on dvd but not holding out my breath for this one. I've got my eye on War of the arrows.

So, did anyone watch this yet? Since the foreign DVD/BD hasnt been released yet I was planning to but the nearest theatres that are showing it is 50 miles away from me. I just have no desire to drive that far to see a movie. BTW, saw War of the Arrows, also. A simple story with nice action scenes.

Closest theater for me is 30+ miles. Bummer. Going to have to wait for Blu Ray, I guess.

Well, it looks like it will eventually play in my town but I have to wait a couple of weeks.

I got the Mei-Ah dvd last week. It's good, but I agree with the statement that there's really no character development. What makes the best action movies work is the interplay of characters, and even though there's some great character acting here, the script really doesn't build the sort of tension between them that makes the action pay off emotionally. Make no mistake, the fight choreography and staging of action sequences totally delivers, as reported. I think most martial arts fans will be pretty pleased.

Amazon shows a Aug. 17 release date for the BD.
NF has Merantau in BD for rent.

Really?? the ones that comes to my mind after watching this are kids like the Columbine and Timothy Holmes TDKN shooter. I just finished with The Raid and my initial gut on this on spot on from the trailers and early reviews. From beg to end it was nothing but mindless brainless no plot no character no story action after action which btw was prob the worst fight choreography I've seen. It was just so staged, rehearsed and fake looking and very violent and bloody in cheesy stupid fashion like Machete. I kept thinking that guy Holmes from the TDK would love this kind of stuff. Ok seriously, I see a lot of people madly loving this on other threads and talkbacks which I still don't get but so if anyone enjoyed it that's fine good for you YMMV .

I mean cmon, something like Ong bak which was perhaps campy, not as polished with the acting or direction or equal in the production value but at least it had a story, interesting characters, and was entertaining. The Raid looked great on the surface but upon inspection was just a vacuous empty shell.

I liked it. Who needs character development when you have police baton tracheotomies?
I liked it but thought some of the fighting scenes were a bit tiresome.
E.g. after they've kicked eachother in the head 20 times it's kind of like........

Chuck Norris originally appeared in the "Street Fighter II" video game, but was removed by Beta Testers because every button caused him to do a roundhouse kick. When asked bout this "glitch," Norris replied, "That's no glitch."

Loved it. Not a fan of Dredd getting linked but whatever. Wall Street was in a building too.
