Running coax for DirecTV

Thread Starter
Our house was flooded a few years ago and all the wiring was stripped. After repairs I reran only what I needed for my Dish dual tuner DVR. I'm about to finish the basement again and planning on switching to DirecTV, so I want to get all my wiring done correctly for Dish and flexible enough for DTV and anything else I might decide to do in the future.

Right now I have just 2 coax runs:
- From where it enters the house to the living room
- From the living room to a bedroom

The ultimate goal is a patch panel in the basement that will cover all my coax, network and telephone needs. What I'm not sure about is how to "future-proof" the coax. I'm planning on a dual tuner DVR and another dual tuner receiver (and maybe a third single tuner) when I switch to DTV.

So.. how does DTV work? Does the receiver pass through like Dish, so I'll need to wire TVs in line? How does the second receiver access what's on the DVR? Do I need to 2 runs of coax to them?

And thanks in advance!

Dish and Direct TV are pretty much the same. They use the same frequency band and their LNB's are powered and tuned with a DC voltage over the cable to the dish.

It's hard to see the future but right now you need one cable per tuner/LNB.

The dual tuner would need two cables from the box to dish but one dish/dual LNB.

Beyond that is gets complicated but there are devices (diplexers) that allows more than one tuner to share a dish/LNB
