Anyone see the trailer in 3D at The Hobbit? To me it reminded me of the old South Park animation. Each piece of image on the screen is a cutout and was simply layered on top of each other.

LOL, Abrams and his beloved lens flair flare is back.

I saw the 9min preview before The Hobbit and thought it was great.

Saw the 9 minute preview before The Hobbit and I won't be seeing this film in 3D. No way. Hated the 3D look.

I have finally weened myself from 3D. The only film I have seen in 3D that I thought actually worked was Avatar. Everything else I have seen in 3D disappointed me. Obviously, then, I too will watch Star Trek 2 in 2D.

Current 3-D technology is still stuck in the Viewmaster era. It's a fad, brought to you by people whose primary motivation is not artistic but designed to persuade you to spend more money on theater tickets and consumer electronics. As I've said before, wake me when they have true holographic projection - then we'll finally have 3-D worth talking about. I'm much more interested in higher resolution display technologies like 4K, Ultra-HD, and HFR that make the 2-D image sharper, clearer, and brighter.

I understand this movie will show the invention of the holodeck, which is why there is the 3D (not really, but it would be cool biggrin.gif).

Same. Even the best 3D I've seen today still has that 'layered' non-quality. It looks awful. I'd rather have the higher resolution tech too. In fact, I'd like to skip past 4K and go straight to 8K. Those of you who saw the Sharp 8K display at last January's CES show will agree. biggrin.gif

My dream technology would be one that allowed 3D movies to be 100 percent convincing 100 percent of the time and do it without the necessity of glasses. Alas, the present state of the art in 3D falls far short of that dream.

+1

I have read there is work being done to remove glasses from the equation.
IIRC, Toshiba has said they will come out with a glassless 3D display (there are probably other makers too).

They had them on display at CES 2012. They looked like complete ass and most spectators I talked with agreed. You had to have your head in a vice to even get the 3D effect at all. Then the rest of the image 95% of the time had it's own issues. Glasses-free 3D has an even longer way to go than active/passive glasses 3D.

Already been seen, but around 10 years away for consumer apps.

That's unfortunate...guess I won't let it interfere in my next display purchase.

I'm finding that I really like 3D at the Theater (IMAX). And, I thought the 9 minute Star Trek IMAX exclusive looked fantastic! And I'm looking forward to seeing it in 3D. I agree that Avatar has looked the best. But I liked Prometheus as well as The Hobbit in the 3D format. For the record, I have only seen 3D at the local IMAX. And it seems to always be a top notch presentation there. With so many flavors of 3D Theaters around, maybe that has something to do with it (some theaters not as good as others)? To be honest, since I have a fairly decent home theater, I can't imagine going to an actual theater and seeing anything except in 3D.

I haven't tried 3D at home yet. Although I did purchase a 3D capable projector within the last year (JVC RS55), I still need to upgrade the BD Player, and buy the emitter and glasses. But at this time, I am quite happy just watching 2D at home.

Yes, I saw them as well at CES. They look horrible to say the least.

Cuz we don't like sh**ty non-immersive diorama looking 3D? Lol! Yeah, okay. "Let's get rid of tv's altogether." I want my 8k! I think that will be some sort of television device. wink.giftongue.gif

Plus, you Aliens should have this technology. Give it to us! biggrin.gif

We’ve been here and helping you all along; you’ve just taken the credit. smile.gif

We’ll give you a simple example that happens every day on this forum that you don’t even notice.

Don’t you find it odd that, tonys101, who started the – Movie with the HOTTEST girl you've ever seen - hasn’t posted since (3 years ago), and it was his second and final post on AVS? The moniker - tonys101. Seriously? tonys101. You don’t get it? If you can’t understand that, then you know why we have kept far enough away. biggrin.gif

But, hey, give tony the credit. tongue.gifwink.gifbiggrin.gif

How does the 2D performance of your PJ rate?
I am interested in buying one.....

I think you would be happy with the 2D performance. Although, it requires some set up to look its best

Thanx for the info.

Been on a media blackout for this, so of course there's a 10 min preview on the Hobbit in IMAX. Can we talk about how F'N I HATE that, and today's BS marketing?

Anyways, looks brilliant. Perfect blend of characterization, intrigue, and action. ILM had also come a long way since Star Wars, and is really proving their mettle in CGI. Let's just hope the story hold up just as well, the lens flairs have been cut, and we get something great here. Back to my shuttlecraft as far as media goes.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Any other Trek fan sort of cringe when seeing the Big E underwater? Only to be thrilled when TO'd Pegg points out of inadvisable and ridiculous it was? Touche, and very funny!

While I agree, I do have to say this was the only 3D presentation to ever give me a physical reaction (flinching away from a thrown spear in one scene). That NEVER happens to me, in all those gimmicky uses or not, and I'm wondering if the soundscape and careful use of the 3D caused it.

It definitely caught me by surprise.

And no, it really didn't offer me anything to watch the 3D version.
