New to HT..need some help!

Hey guys

This is my first post on here after searching around for quite a bit. Wanted to get some input since I'm pretty new to the home theater game. I'm trying to get a system for my bedroom (its an odd size, about 14x22, but my viewing area will be the short way, not the long way). I also want to get something that isn't going to break the bank, looking right now to spend around $600 for speakers and receiver, which I know isn't much at all, but it's really all I can afford right now.

My thoughts on speakers were originally to get a Polk RM705 ($249.99) or Polk RM6570 (179.99) and get a full 5.1 right away, along with a 5.1 or 7.1 receiver.

After doing more research, as of now I'm leaning a little more towards going with this: 2 Monitor 30s, a CS1, and a PSW10 (roughly $280) to get better speakers and only a 3.1 for now. And then further down the road either get 2 more M30s or RM7s for the surrounds.

Also, I know this is the speaker forum, but if anyone has any good receiver suggestions with this setup, I'd appreciate it.

Will this be for HT use only, or will you be listening to music with it too? And are you willing to upgrade as you get more money, or do you just want to spend the 600 and be done with it?

mainly HT, but some music here or there..probably connect an ipod or laptop from time to time..i mean i was hoping to stay around $600, especially if i go with a 3.1 setup for the time being..but if something is going to be that much better, for just a little more $$ id be all ears

I would go with a 3.1 set-up with a better subwoofer

Monitor30's at newegg.com go on sale for $90 a pair and the cs1 goes for $65.

The subwoofer I would go Bic f12 over the Polk psw10. I had the Polk psw10 in a smaller room than yours and not impressed by it at all.

Ifvyou are on a serious budget I would ignore the Polk Rm705 though and go with the rm6750 its a bit better with larger drivers. I started with the Polk rm6750 in my 14.75 x 13.5 living room, a year added monitor 30's and a cs1 to the front and noticed a big improvement. I wish I started with them

As an alternative to the Polk (so that you have something to compare), also check out the Infinity Primus series. Crutchfield has the P152, P162, and PC250 on closeout since Infinity just updated the line.

For a little more than the PSW10, the BIC F12 is very popular around here in the low budget range for HT, and there is a very long thread on the subwoofer forum where you can learn more about it.

Finally, check accessories4less.com for factory reconditioned, factory warrantied Onkyos. For example, good savings on the Onkyo TX-SR309 over what you can get it for on Amazon.

what are your thoughts on the factory refurbs? I like the Onkyo TX-NR509 on Accessories4less for $219. I was leaning towards that receiver anyways after seeing it new on Amazon for $270

I am not a fan of onkyo's as I recommended to a friend and his 507 was dead in the first month and then they gave him a 508 to die 2 months later. So he bought a Denon avr 1611 and has been running strong ever since.

My Sony outlived and still living compared to his budget onkyo's

I would go with somehting like this for a 3.1:

This putts you over budget by about $80, but I think it would sound good in your room. The bic sub is WAY better than that polk and will sound much better I think. This also leave you room to get some polk 30s or something later to complete your 5.1 for pretty cheap.

Sign up for newegg.com email list so you will be alerted when they put the monitor series ii speakers on sale they are cheaper there than amazon

Cheap receiver to look at under $200 would be the Sony str-dh710 (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sony-7.1-C...i_sku=16489922) though for another hundred you can get the Denon avr1611 which is what I would do

I would consider the Denon 1611 receiver - and get a pair of
tower speakers. Then save up for a center channel speaker,
and a decent sub.

The OP also mentioned that he was considered just going 3.1. So I threw out those suggestions, not necessarily to build a complete set for 5.1, but to further his options.
