'Whitney' on NBC HD - Page 7

I've laughed at some of the physical comedy Whitney and her boyfriend pull off, but the supporting cast in general are awful and poorly written. We still watch because my wife likes the boyfriend, but I mentally tune this out, but for the occasional slapstick moment (which they do well).

Yes. The supporting cast really doesn't make it. Whitney and Alex still make it worthwhile though the marriage proposal seems a bit of shark jumperynessish.* That was an edge to the relationship that they are messing with way too early.

I dunno, but when Whitney said last night she had a landing strip, I was like HELL YES, that's way hot.

I like the show, still good. Whitney seems like the one that breaks character the most. A great example is the ending. I still get the feeling Chris is more than just a co star/bf.

Watch the show every week on DVR, it is pretty good overall. The new "gay Neal?" thing really seems forced however.

Yeah.

They went the "Happy Endings" way with Neal... doesn't work out well here..
If there's a season 2, they need to dump Neal, with some line about him going back to that TV executive he used to work for.

as i clicked on thread, i had this very thought

Good episode. lol

I know I'm probably the only person on this board who thinks this, but I'm glad Whitney got renewed today. I'm not a laugh track snob, and this show was always good for a few laughs.
Nice, glad it was renewed.
I'm glad too. The chemistry between Alex and Whitney is very believable and well acted, even if the supporting characters are weak (although they got better as the season progressed--I think casting is more to blame than writing).
Interesting. It appeared as though the writers didn't think this would happen either!

The show went through some radical changes from start to finish

I called it (at least the part about Neal being gone and back to 30 Rock). Glad to see this show will be returning to the fall schedule sooner than expected.

I thought Jack's comment to him on a recent 30 Rock episode was funny. Something about "You thought the grass would be greener elsewhere, but here you are back here again." He and his girlfriend just didn't work together.

Glad to see this show coming back. I think it is highly underrated.

I might watch the first episode, but that show did a 180° last season. I'm all for character growth/development, but WOW eek.gif

Yeah, last year was just weird. Started off as a crap show. Got a little bit better, but most of the side characters remained crap, and then the entire thing just seemed to run right off the tracks. NBC saved it for whatever reason, though, thinking it will work for them on a different night. I think what they're going to find is that it's going to do worse this year since they've already given people that did watch it year 1 the impression that the show is simply dead and gone since it hasn't aired yet.

Pretty much everyone on this board said that the supporting cast wasn't working. The nucleus of Whitney and Alex was working very well. They just need a better supporting cast although the Roxanne character was alright.

Until I found this thread and caught up with it, I hadn't realized that Jonathan on "30 Rock" was also played by Maulik Pancholy.  Now that he's back there but "Whitney" is also renewed, I guess there are three possibilities for Neal:

1. Pancholy will do double duty and play both roles.
2. Another actor will play Neal.
3. Neal will be written out and another character introduced to round out the requisite sextet.

Some series of that genre have gotten along with a core quintet (such as "Traffic Light" and "Friends with Benefits" -- and "New Girl," come to think of it), but I've a feeling that

4. Neal will be written out and only five core characters (Whitney, Alex, Roxanne, Lily, and Mark) will remain.

isn't going to happen.

Neal has done double duty before. Weeds and 30 Rock. Numerous episodes of 30 Rock feature him, but also feature replacements for him. I suppose Weeds overlapped with 30 Rock, which made him unavailable. His role in 30 Rock is incredibly minor anyway. Amusing, but minor. His role on Whitney was quite significant , but not very good. Pretty much every side-character on Whitney was dreadful. The two mains make it semi-watchable though.
I'd rather they write him out if they are going to get a someone else to play him.
We'll just have to wait to see what happens.  I remember how in the 1980s Heather Locklear was on both "T. J. Hooker" and "Dynasty" at the same time, and Sheryl Lee Ralph did stints on "Designing Women" and "L. A. Law" while she was a regular on "It's a Living."  "30 Rock" won't be around next season, but it's way too soon to speculate on whether "Whitney" will be either.

What makes it harder is 30 Rock films in NYC and Whitney in LA. Allison Brie pulls of Mad Men and Community, but they're both in LA.

Ow, good point; hadn't thought of that.  Also, they're on the same network, so it would be awkward to schedule them on the same night, even reruns, if NBC wanted to unless they made sure it's a "30 Rock" episode without Pancholy.  "T. J. Hooker" was on CBS while "Dynasty" was on ABC, and "L. A. Law" was on NBC and "Designing Women" on CBS while "It's a Living" was in syndication, so the two examples I gave earlier didn't have a same-network problem.

Likewise, "Mad Men" is on AMC while "Community" is on NBC.

My wife and I have said the same thing since the beginning: Whitney/Alex chemistry and casting is spot on. The rest miss horribly for both casting and chemistry.

Did anyone remember to watch it? I forgot. Apparently America forgot as well. It had it's lowest ratings ever and matched the ratings of the dead show it replaced. Poor NBC. I guess I'll check it out later on the iPad NBC app. Interested to see if they jettisoned a lot of the weak supporting cast.
I watched it. Was a bit surprised it wasn't rebooted and had the same characters. I still find it worthwhile.
Recorded but not yet watched... It would have been easy to miss though as it returned at an odd time of the season for a returning show to premier the first new episode of a season.
