If I wanna get my feet wet in calibration ...

... would an X-Rite i1Display 2 and the free HCFR software provide adequate results?

The other option to start would be to also use the free HCFR software but get the i1Display Pro for more money.

Initially I'd just like to calibrate my television and computer monitors as well as those of a few relatives. I think that if I went the least expensive route and enjoyed calibrating and wanted to further my results I could easily re-sell and upgrade.

I don't think that I'd like to spend the additional money right now on ChromaPure or Calman, though they could (should?) be options down the road.

I guess when it comes down to it, for a beginner is the new i1Display Pro worth the extra cost versus the i1Display 2 when using the free HCFR software.

Thanks for any tips/insight that can be provided.

As someone in your position, my plan is to buy the i1D3 Pro and Chromapure.
Here is my thinking.
1. I have already spent $425 for a pro to calibrate my projector with a Klein K10 http://www.spectracal.com/newproduct...TYBQSMQWH&Mx=6
so I know what it looks like when it is as close to correct as the projector controls allow.
2. So, I want a meter that is accurate, has good low light accuracy, hopefully has the longest drift free life span of meters in it's class, can be recalibrate when it does drift, comes with quality software, and is affordable.
3. I will be using it with a projector so a non contact type meter is what I need
4. I have never been one to buy inexpensive tools and expect high performance so to buy something that will not be as accurate but cost $200 less is wasting $300 (like buying knock off projector lamps). If I can not afford the product that will perform the best, then I would rent/borrow it or wait till I can afford it.

All this seems to bring me to the new i1D3 Pro with Choromapure for $560. This is just a little over the cost of a pro calibration, and meets all my criteria.
I don't expect to make money with this or become proficient in calibration any more than I have become a furniture maker with all of the woodworking tools I have accumulated over the years, but when I need to cut a price of wood, I know it will be straight..
Good luck on your choice

I don't think the i1 Display Pro works with HCFR.

I see that after re-reading some information that you are correct. So its an i1Display 2 with the HCFR or an i1Display Pro with ChromaPure.

Hmm. That jump in cost (for me at the moment), probably has made my decision easier.

Thanks.
