WooHoo Movie Marquee

Just picked up a fully functional large ( approx 38" wide x 48" tall ) marquee off Kijiji for $40 .

My 2 questions are

1-what to put in it?
Can I just put a regular paper movie poster in it or does it have to be a special plastic poster? There is already a opaque piece of plastic where the poster is to go. Plastic is approx 24" wide x 33" tall

2- All the chasing lights seem to be working but where in Canada or the States I guess does one find these lights if and when they burn out?

Thanks in advance. Sorry for the poor quality iPhone pic

The posters that go into lightboxes are called double sided posters. They have the image on both sides of the posters. If you put a standard single sided poster in a lightbox, it will commonly look washed out vs the proper double or two sided poster. There are a number of threads on these types of posters and lightboxes that will come up using the search engine.

In the past, ebay has been a decent place to buy 2 sided posters (since they are produced for commercial use. There are exceptions where star wars shop will sell them etc.

Great thanks for the help.

I forgot to mention two things:

The opague sheet sits between the lights and poster, it helps to disperse/spread the light. The clear plastic, as you can imagine sits on the other side of theposter to protect it.

Secondly, since this forum doesn't get as much traffic..you may find more results in the archives when searching for info....still current relative to common questions about this topic.

You can user regular single-sided posters but there are double-sided posters made for the exact purpose of being back-lit. The double-sided posters will be brighter and more colorful than the single-sided posters. But, if you didn't know any better, (I guess I already spoiled that though) the single-sided posters will look fine.

Try to find a manufacturer's tag on or in the unit and google "replacement bulbs [manufacturer] poster case", etc. If you can't find that see if the wattage (ex: 7.5 watts) or any other info is printed on the bulbs themselves.

Good luck.

Yes I just did a search and plenty came up, thanks. Mine didnt come with a clear sheet of plexi only the opaque. I think for $40 I wont get upset about that.

Since I have you here, where can I find the lettering that goes underneath the poster that says coming soon etc???

One thing to note is that a standard double sided poster usually measures 27" x 40".

If this thing is 24x32", you may find it hard to find double sided material.

4 or so years ago I bought 3 of those locally off of Craigslist. I could not find replacement bulbs and eventually gave up, transferring good bulbs from two of the units to get one fully functional unit.

What I did on one unit was replace all the lights with a Home Depot Christmas light string that had a variety of setting on how the lights would flash. Works great and the light string cost under $10 after Christmas.

None of the 3 of mine had the clear front plastic with the unit. I assumed that they just didn't have that. I was told by the seller that they originally were from a Blockbuster store. I don't have access to the poster boxes right now but I do know that the poster viewing area is a couple of inches shorter than the standard poster size - I had to cut or fold full size posters in order to make them fit. Also, you lose some of the poster under the gold frame that opens and closes to allow the poster to be inserted from the front.

These babies are pretty darn heavy, so make sure when you mount them on the wall you hit studs with the mounting screws. I also added "L" brackets on the inside top and screwed those to the studs just for added safety. You don't want these to have any chance of falling off the wall. I also added an on/off switch on the bottom since the only way to turn mine off were to unplug them from the wall.

Thanks for the info bfuke yes it is heavy. All the lights seem to be working so I'll keep my fingers crossed that they stay working for awhile.

Lol. Shult is still around I googled them. When I get a chance I'm going to take the back of this unit off and gather more details. Then I'll contact them about replacement parts to keep on hand.

The hardest decision for me right now is the choice of poster to put in it.

Try the selection at poster planet or movieposter USA . I've been looking for posters and they have some great deals. What does this have to do with this thread you may ask. I found two of these bass industries light boxes during bulk pick up week. So thanx for the double sided poster advice .

Those places will sell repros as originals. I know most of you don't care, but this person is reputable and sells genuine new material. http://www.ebay.com/sch/ddilts399/m....ipg=50&_sop=10

Not a big deal to most of you, but the repros are generally of less quality, with blurred text and higher contrast. Besides, I have a strong dislike about supporting pirates.

AVS also has a strict policy against promoting, discussing or linking to pirated copyrighted material.

Yeah, I should have added that a good source for newer stuff is to shop craigslist. Theater employees get posters as perks and often will sell them off for a few $$ there. You need to sort from what is there, but prices are generally $1-10 per poster.

Yes this person is selling them for $10 each with a few exceptions
