Not just lights, but a person's breathing or reside on clothing could introduce foreign substances that will erode the drawings. The caves are sealed to the public. Only authorized researchers are allowed in. Herzog petitioned the government and was given a special dispensation to enter with a very small crew. This movie will be most people's only opportunity to see the original drawings.

I got this yesterday, the quality isn't really all that great.

Anybody with me on this one?

Best Buy had this on pre-order for $19.99, picked it yesterday, but have to wait till the 25th since it's for the lil'woman from Santa...

As mentioned earlier in the thread, the movie had to be shot on consumer cameras with limited lighting. It had a lot of technical issues in the theater. I would assume that what you're seeing is part of that.

I just received this from Blockbuster Online, the 1st disc I've received from them that is 3D (actually 2D or 3D bluray). Will be watching it tomorrow night.

I tried watching it tonight, but my 3D signal kept getting lost from my Sony BD player. New system and all, but I've never had the issue playing other 3D content through the BD player.

Anyone have issues with the 3D signal getting dropped?

I watched last night and didn't have any playback issues on my Oppo.
Great use of 3D for depth and for the most part thought it looked great despite the caveats of using consumer grade cameras. Does anyone know which cameras they used?

Got to finaly sit down with the lil' woman and watch her gift from Santa...

(Incidently, my gift from Santa was the latest Jean Auel's novel "Land of the Painted Cave", where the author in her forward thanks many who were on screen in this film for all of their help and assistance. She was given VIP access/tours/info to this cave and others as she researched her book).

I did have one or two "cross-eyed" moments, like when panning, and stalagmites/stalagtites were close to the camera lens. For the most part I think the 3D enhanced the film, giving not only depth to the wall, but also highlighting the contours of the walls. I did find myself looking at a drawing, and could see where flickering flame light could actually give the drawings a sense of motion. Also found myself looking at one of the multiple layers of drawings and seeing different things as the angle/lighting changed. Incredible to think it was all done in a dark cave, several thousand years ago.

Effective use of this 3D medium to convey the scope of what the director/producer wanted to show. Well done, and a pleasure to see what few will ever have the chance to see first hand.

Interesting enough, I believe I remember reading that they guy who filmed this had just taped two cameras together

I don't know for sure, but the barrel distortion looks a lot like what I have on 3D videos I made with 2 HD Hero cameras lashed together. I'd bet anything that is what they used. The company now sells a housing and sync cable that makes 3D HD Hero video very accessible.

And having finally gotten around to watching this movie at home, I found it to be one of the best applications of 3D out there. Seeing the cave paintings curving around the walls gave them so much more impact. I remember seeing a vase made by Picasso (in a museum) that had women's hips curving around the widest part of the vase, and I was impressed how imaginatively he used the shape to add to the image. The cave painters in France outdid Picasso, in my opinion.

I was disappointed. Half of it worked alright, once in a while things looked great, but there was too much footage that was poorly postconverted. I know, tight budget, etc, but it's still unfortunate.
