How can I tell if I'm getting multichannel output to receiver from cable box?

Hi everyone - I recently purchased a hooked up a new sony ht-ct550w. I am running an HDMI cable from the cable box to the input on the receiver. The dolby digital icon is lighting up on the front screen of the receiver when everything is on (just the little icon with a D next to it). This is a 2.1 soundbar system so not expecting anything great but wondering if I'm getting the full multichannel output from the cable box to the receiver... wouldn't DTS or something light up as well? Just want to make sure I'm getting the most from this system...

Should be getting Dolby Digital if the cable box is set up properly. Check settings in their first. Will not get DTS as DD is as good as it gets from cable or sat. boxes. Also no one is broadcasting anything higher than DD.

TV broadcasts are either stereo or DD 5.1. TV does not use DTS, which is simply a different multichannel codec. So, if you are getting a DD indicator, then the cable box is likely outputting encoded 5.1 sound. Of course, with a 2.1 soundbar, you'll never get a full multichannel output no matter what the source.

So sounds like I'm getting the output I'm supposed to based on the DD indicator and sound coming out. Sorry for the noob question, appreciate the replies
