I agree that is what it is: a plot device.

Unfortunately, where I hang my hat, this is something at the forefront of current public discourse.
I really don't want to get into the "issue" in depth (in order to keep Larry's Tylenol expenditures somewhat reasonable) on this forum, but I would be happy to discuss this at length with anyone thru PMs.

I do agree that it doesn't paint a good picture for those who take movies as means for education, but that doesn't prevent this from being an excellent film with incredible performances and direction.

At SOME point, people find themselves forced to take a stand, and this goes a Bridge Too Far....IMO.

My interpretation is that everyone died and is in some form of purgatory. The wolves are exaggerated because they represent death. Liams charactor considered taking his own life at one point. The ultimate sin if you believe that type of stuff. "Live and die on this day"??? He must live again by fighting, or at least not surrendering to, the alpha wolf (death???) By his refusing to give up, he's choosing to live again, and then and only then can he die?.. Other characters had major life changes before they died. This is just one of several interpretations this film left with me and needs repeated viewing. Unfortunately I didn't blind buy and rented it on amazon. I will be buying it soon.

why did avs link "think this" to some gay stuff on amazon?

I dunno know....
But if we continue chatting about this movie, this thread's discussion won't go much further...
As always, it helps if someone actually saw the film or show interest to do just that in a near future to further any discussion on a given film.

Shamus,

I saw that interpretation over the BD section, and it's an interesting one, and like you I will probably revisit this as well on disc.

I'm gonna remember that...

Meh, don't bother. Pretty crappy movie.

I mean if they're going to portray the wolves as "Jurassic Park Raptors 2.0" they might as well have given us a background story as to how they turned out that way...
Interspecies breeding with Alaskan roughnecks?
Secret Gov. nuclear experiment exposure?

For the love of dog give us something, we're used to suspend our disbelief with some incredible bull$h1t story you Hollywood types come up with, just don't pretend this is a "real animal" and it could happen to anybody...

I could search for a redeeming value such as the incredible nature and its forces displayed throughout but the overall crappiness of the movie and the incredibly unlikable characters overall killed the movie for me.

Too bad, I like Liam Neeson a lot... He even said it at the beginning that he was surrounded by a$$h0l3s. Well said, Liam, well said...

^^ Yeah you brought up a good point and I feel the same way although I didn't feel it was a crappy movie. They should have at least gave us a reason why these wolves would do such things out of the norm...anything. I thought of some ideas like the wolves bred with bears or rabid pit bulls from a fighting ring. Everything else was in line with mother nature so to throw in the "Jurassic" wolves I could see why could turn off some viewers to the point of not totally enjoying it.

They just wanted a monster for their movie and remembered the story of Little Red Riding Hood and The Big Bad Wolf and recalled how scared they were when their mommies read it to 'em...

Thats the main reason I haven't watched the film. I understand its only a movie and the wolves are merely a plot device, but still there has to be some aspect of reality involved to make the story plausible. Wolves don't act like that, thats a fact, no matter how many wiki articles you want to quote. It would be nice to think we've moved past demonizing animals but apparently some are still willing to accept them as evil. What if instead of wolves, it had been "indians" who were portrayed as bloodthirsty savages who loved to scalp white men just for the heck of it? The native american was portrayed exactly like that in countless movies but noone would dare to do it now. Part of the reason why is that the native americans living now would rise up in anger at the false stereotype being portrayed. Wolves can't protest or speak up for themselves-heck, left to themselves they want nothing to do with us. I guess that makes them safe as a villian in hollywood's mind. But since wolves can't speak the truth for themselves some of us feel obligated to do it for them...

Okay, how's this? Watch the film solely for entertainment...but make it a double feature with "Never Cry Wolf", just so you get a view from the other side
post #132 of 182
Hey lone wolf (convenient alias btw...
Don't bother with the movie, it's really not worth it...

I also like your "Indian" demonization parallel.

"Come on people, we know Indians are not like that (anymore. we wiped them out). It's only a movie, chillax"

If wolves could talk they would be questioning how Liam's character avoided severe hypothermia.

It was a deleted scene that's why you missed it:
He fought a T-Rex, hollowed out his body and climbed inside for warmth*

* Yes T-Rex was warm blooded...

I thought little red riding hood was the villain... I guess I must be "mis"remembering the story...

And by little ones, let's Hollywoodize them a bit and make them 30 feet tall and also bloodthirsty maneaters...
There.
All better.

Or... Feral pigs take to the ocean, breed with dolphins and wreak havoc on unsuspecting college kids on spring break in paradise... PIGPHIN

Ha! Love it!
How about us writing a collaborative AVS Forum movie?
I'll bet you it will rock.
Let's make it low budget. No more than $100M!

That's Makua Valley in the background, it's on the west side of Oahu. There's a very long story attached to the pig in the picture. I was actually trying to save the pig from drowning just so it wouldn't attract sharks. Two hunters (one recently out of prison and on probation) had chased it into the ocean. I had tried to give it to them after telling them to swim out to the boat. But they couldn't figure out how to get it to shore. In the process of trying to get him to shore my wife ran over him with the boat and pushed his head underwater twice. The first time I sort of gave him CPR (pounded him on the chest and shook his head) and he coughed up a bunch of water and revived, the second time he drowned. I ended up giving him to a guy (Rusty) on the beach. It made the newspaper (no input from me) but the story was nothing like what actually happened. Surprise Surprise.

WOW, just wow!
Thanx for sharing.

BTW, my idea of paradise is your great state.
I try to spent a few weeks there every year.

I have no idea where Heaven is....but it can't be too far from Hawaii.

Please, "Indians" consisted of many different tribes, and yes some were "savages". Their depiction has changed no doubt due to a more enlighted understanding of them and also the PC culture we live in. There is always a self rightous group that protest about certain villains in movies, or portrayal of groups that they don't agree with, so what else is new? This is a fictional film, and as you pointed it out they only plot elements, so do we really need more crusading about this in this thread?
BTW how the Indians would rise up? Banning some from their casinos? And since you guys are joking about some movie ideas, how about ... a pig and a wolf went to see a movie together......

It's not a crusade, it's an exposure of a weak-@$$ plot element...
That's quite different, don't you think?
