I just purchased a NR3009 and the heat is pretty intense... My previous receiver, an NR809 had internal cooling fans and it stayed cool. The 3009 doesn't seem to have internal fans, at least not that I can see, is this correct? I have searched this thread and only a few mentions of heat, and no mention of this being a problem, but this much heat seems like it could be a cause of accelerated aging of components...

I agree with you, I came from an older 806 and this thing is a monster heat producer. What I did was use a laptop cooler (I used from coolermaster, however any will do) that had a USB dongle power cord that I plugged into the back of the Onkyo, and it draws enough air to keep the internals cooler.

This is a cheap one to try out:

I purchased it and it works, but wanted something with more airflow, so I got this from newegg when it was $8:

Give one of those a try, or use that idea to help with heat. Just make sure they pull the air out, you dont want to blow it into the case. Otherwise the 3009 is a beast, have been very happy with its performance in movies and music.

What internal temps are you guys getting? Here's how to find out. When the unit is on hold down the display button on the front panel, while holding display press and release the power button, then press the tone button. This can only be done on the unit itself not the remote. You will see some new information on the screen and the temp is displayed in Celsius. My integra 80.3 (virtually the same as the 5009) runs around 44 deg Celsius at a fairly loud level. Granted my unit is open on the sides and rear but only has about 3/4" clearance above to a glass shelf. Still this temp is pretty good compared to the older models and i believe the internal fans don't even kick on until around 55 deg Celsius.

Thanks for the very helpful info! Watching cable news in all ch stereo at moderate level temp is 38 C. I also found the service manual link in an earlier post and the 3009 does indeed have internal fans. Unless I hear about temperature caused problems, I will assume Onkyo engineers know what they are doing with temperature specs and not worry about it... The receiver is on a cabinet with nothing around it so I'll skip the added cooling fans for now.

I have yet to see a single report of these units getting extremely hot like some previous onkyo models. 38 C is nothing to worry about.

If anyone is interested in a 3009 let me know. Classified section is closed to new listings.

Only a few weeks old. Figured I'd ask here first before I eBay it!

SOLD.

Why sell? I thought you were a fan of the 09.

And more specifically, what have you found to 'outperform' the 3009?

I think he went with the 818 but I would wait to see what the 3 flagship models will bring to the table! . Anyone know when??

I have the 805 used as a prepro, and love it. I do want to upgrade with XT32 and be able to run all 11.1 speakers simultaneously, like the Denon 4311. I was hoping the higher Onkyo models later this year, early fall?, would offer this but I've heard no word about their features.

I love the 3009. I Review all the new Onkyo receivers as a hobby. I could end up going back to a 3009 or hanging out for another of their latest.

Does anyone know where to find the serial number on the 3009?

I downloaded the latest firmware and it has been 'writing' for the last 6 hours. Is that normal?

I had to unplug it in order to stop the process. I am going to try it again tomorrow morning. I am guessing it just got hung up.

It happens every so often. My last 3009 took three attempts to get it! eek.gif

Tried it again today and it worked. Not sure what the FW update did but at least it is up to date.
Thanks

No problem. Every so often maybe they just have a glitch in their system? Glad you are all set for now. This update is well worth doing. smile.gif

I wish you reviewed speakers. I am looking to upgrade my existing set. Put aside 3K for that.

I am going to be listing my last 3009 shortly. Only a couple weeks old. I plan to keep my last 818 around a little bit so I can compare it to the new models coming. smile.gif

If anyone is interested in a 3009 let me know soon.

Whenever you review the 3010/5010 please do comment on DTS Neo 11.x , if you have the ability to have all 11 speakers.  I've been waiting for this implementation to upgrade from my 805 which I really like, but there is an attraction to having 11 speakers in action even if it is matrixed.  I plan on placing the 2 heights on the ceiling at about 45 degrees from the seated position with the hope that it  enhances flyovers and other overhead front-back effects ending up in the back surrounds or vice versa.

I can actually do 11 speakers. I plan to experiment with this. Oh and I only plan to look at the 3010. I will either keep it or a 3009 or a 818 as my personal one. Jury is still out. smile.gif
