And I just turned the channel (using DirecTV) about 15 times. There is not any loud distracting clicks. There is however a slight "click" when the channel's audio is confirmed and the 3009's Last Valid setting (for that audio input) takes effect.

Joerod, just wondering if your having the same issue I'm having where DTS sources that are 5.1 are being output to 7.1 during straight decode.

Yes, there are triggers in zone 2 and 3 but NONE in the main listening area. Interestingly the onkyo 885 i just sold had it. Yes I know you can just hook up to the zone 2 trigger output and press the zone button until the red light appears followed by pressing the source on/off button BUT so far creating a MACRO for this has not been entirely failsafe---anyway maybe there next pre/pro will have it

I believe the 5508 have assignable triggers and their new 5509 will have it too. Someone probably already answered you on this. I also find it strange as well.

OK, the 885 triggers Zone 1 (12VDC) and its successors 886, 5507, 5508, 5509.
But those are power amp-less preamps.
You can't compare oranges and apples regarding this, meaning preamps and receivers, which have the amps built-in already.
Which receiver has Zone 1 triggers ?

Many mid to high level AVRs I have owned had a 12v trigger for Zone 1. My 805 was the first AVR that did not have it. The Marantz SR7005 and Denon 3311 have Zone 1 triggers. I never understood that the Onkyo AVRs do not have it as well. At least make it so one could assign the triggers to specific zones if it is possible.

I only have used DTS's NEO: X so I would expect that. I will text the other options later today.

I have been back and forth using the 3009 and the Integra 80.3. I will say that both have the best video processing I have seen to date in a receiver/pre-pro. The Vidal 1900 chip is simply amazing. This lands these units on the map alone.

I should also point out there is a new firmware hitting soon. Trust me when I say many will be even more happy with their 3009!

Good to hear joerod. What does the new update do? I've been happy with my 3009 so far and can't really think of any issues I have with it at the moment.

I have had many receivers also just not nearly as tech savy as you. I do appreciate your reviews and opinions a lot and your very clear and concise reviews have always guided me in the riight direction. I presently have a 3009 and totally agree with you on this unit. I just came from an Integra 50.3 and I would be interested in your opinion on a difference in aq between the integra you have and the 3009. Thank again for all your imput into the fourm.

Thanks I truly appreciate that. There really is not to much difference between the Integra 80.3 and Onkyo 3009 using both as a pre-pro. Now using the 3009 as a Receiver against my 80.3 and Parasound A51 is not fair. Of course using XLR versus RCA many would argue would benefit the 80.3 but I don't want to go there. I love the 80.3 though as well s the 3009 which is still pretty dang good as a Receiver on its own.

I am trying to find a AVR that can take digital input from HDMI or Optical in and then play that audio via a digital out to Zone 2 either preamp or powered.

Any thoughts? I am testing the ONKYO 3009 now but can only switch Analog inputs to zone 2/3


Any help is much appreciated.

I am not aware of any that can do that right now. Analog is much easier for them to switch over. And most likely a lot cheaper.

Denon AVRs (2808CI and higher) have been able to pass optical/digital coax PCM 2.0 to Zones 2/3 for several years. Current year models would include the 3312CI and 4311CI. The Marantz AV7005 and SR7005 from last year are also able to this as well as the current year model, SR6006. The Yamaha Aventage series AX000 and AX010 can pass the same HDMI audio playing in the main zone to Zone 2 as well when set in Party mode.

@JDSmoothie: Thanks! I called Onkyo to confirm and they have no receivers that can switch digital audio to zone 2 or 3 - analog only. Yamaha tech support confirmed Party Mode would do it but you can not have different source in Main vs Zone 2 or 3 (all music the same - hence "Party Mode"). Finally, called Denon and your are dead on, anything above the 2808CI does it. You can have multi source, mutlizone to allow different audio in Main vs zone 2 vs zone 3. PCM2.0 is a requirement though as you state...just thought I would confirm this for the next person reading the message board.

Returning the Onkyo today, ordered the 3312CI...saved about $1300 too!

Oh that's it, get my hopes up, I already have speakers picked out for the heights and sides but refuse to give up my back surrounds so I'm a hold out for a 11.x avr, didn't care for the Denon sound on my prior avr compared to my 805, so Onkyo has been in my sights waiting for a 11.x capability. I use a 6 channel ext amp, so only need the avr amps for the lighter duty newer surrounds.

Please note that new firmware updates replace, and include all content from, previous updates. The latest update includes the following content:


Latest Firmware Number (16 digits): 1061-0500-0110-3101As of 20 December 2011
Improves noise during playback of DTS-HD Master Audio with particular Blu-ray disc;


Corrects operation of Audyssey MultiEQ XT32 in Bi-Amp mode;


Stabilizes audio output when Zone 2 (or 3) is turned on before the main power;
This fix is only applied for Pre-Amp models.

Too bad no 11.2 or Pro. C'mon Onkyo please give this to us soon. I wouldn't mind getting Airplay too. Joerod if you could mention to your contacts at Onkyo it would be great.

From the USA site, the zip file seems to be corrupt for both the 3009 and 5009...

Anyone want to take a stab at downloading and unzipping the package? I'm pretty sure it's broken.

As another side note, and this has happened twice, if I try and update via the Net (and all of my internet functionality as well as iOS control work fine) as soon as I hit via Net, the receive locks up with a display error 5-01... if I power cycle, HDMI is dead... only way to fix is a factory reset.... not fun.. lose all Audyssey setup info, etc.
