Speaker Crackling -- Refurbished Receiver Issue?

Hi all,

Just bought an Onkyo TX-NR509 from accessories4less (refurb) and a new set of Martin Logan MLT-2. Did the wiring, first time installing banana plugs but I think I got it right. Whenever I play music off my iPhone via USB, there's a crackling/popping sound coming from all of the speakers. It's light, but still annoying. There's no crackling/popping if nothing is playing.

Is this a speaker issue? Receiver issue? Wiring issue? Is there any way to be sure? If anyone could shed some light on this problem, I'd really appreciate it!

Try a different (better quality) source and see if it still does that. Poor quality signals can cause speaker crackling especially in the higher notes.

Funny I have a refurb H/K 3600 and I've also noticed a very mild crackle when playing my Ipod Touch this evening and I've noticed quite a bit of sibilance while watching TV. I've been thinking it might be my Polk Rti 8 and Polk CSI 5 despite the fact they are known to be a good match with H/K receiver's smoothness but I'm beginning to think the receiver has a problem.

Sibilance is part of everyday speech. I'd be surprised if you didn't hear it.

Yes but it's a bit on the harsh side which I don't relate to H/K. Even people with deep voices seem to have somewhat of a ssss to their speech. I just switched from a Pioneer 1120k which I thought was fatiguing but sounded great with movies. Now I have a H/K 3600 which I think sound great but has a bit of harshness in vocals which I find annoying and very unlike H/K. It could really be the H/K bringing out detail from the sources I putting into it both good and bad.
